I LANDED ON THE MUN! (career mode)

Used my massive (crazy) rocket to get into orbit, wasn't sure if I'd have enough fuel to get back cos I was messing around for a bit trying to land!

Sorry never thought to take a screen shot, may not be a big deal for some but for me it's massive! next up is a trip to Minmus!

Sent a probe to Duna, did two low altitude passes and gathered much scientific data, on the second pass, did a heavy burn, left Duna, got myself back to Kerbin running on fumes, managed to skim the atmosphere and aerobrake enough to land and recover the data. For just 893 science for one high altitude atmosphere scan, atmospheric pressure scan, gravity scan, temperature scan, two Goo observations at different altitudes and materials bay analysis.

Was a clenching return as I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get back to Kerbin but it was managed and I'm very happy!

I've been testing my newest invention, the Skyhorse!

While making one of these test flights, I barely missed the VAB: I ejected in the last seconds. However, my kerbal forgot to fasten his seatbelt, resulting in this:

His leg got stuck in the seat, saving him from some 10 metres of freefall.

The kerbal has survived the flight \o/

Today was a scientifically productive day for me. I looked at my Science Archive and noticed that Minmus' Greater Flats was missing the probe science - i.e. seismic, thermal and gravitic (high, low, and landed) - largely because it was the site of my first Minmus landing, which did the other stuff. After a moment's thought and a quick look at some thrust and gravity data on the wiki, I decided I could land and take off with a small probe on RCS alone. So I threw one together with a Minmus TWR of about 5 ish (probably a little more, it was an estimate in my head), connected it by a Jr docking port to an orbital probe/service module which had chutes for the return. This assembly on an overpowered lifter was more than sufficient, leaving the full orbital module over Minmus while the lander descended, took its readings and left. Rendezvous and escape for Kerbin went well too. I actually think that with possibly an additional RC-10 and replacing the docking port with a parachute, I could have done away with the orbital stage entirely, but it all worked out.

MomentaryEscape and the Minprobe were returning at roughly the same time, but it wasn't too hard to space out their aerobrakes at that distance. I did accidentally warp Jeb through the atmosphere, but he was fine, using his rockets to change his orbit. Brought down his apoapsis, and lifted his periapsis out of the atmosphere for a while. Minprobe returned straight off, the docking port enough to hold it together when the chutes opened and it landed in the water. Then Jeb started to decelerate for landing. Took a few atmospheric readings on the way down and recovered.

An overall total of over 1400 science from those missions. Haven't spent any of it, though.

I decided that my heavy lifter being able to lift 1.5 orange tanks into orbit wasn't enough. So I <strike>built a bigger one</strike> put two tanks on it and launched them anyway and made it work through sheer willpower. Also I discovered after the fact that the structure I'd used to hold the ship together was in fact a mechanical Kraken that politely waited for the mission to finish and THEN went berserk smashing parts off my ship. o_O (It's that Kraken-looking thingy on the top. Turns out structural I-Beams make really bad structural elements / don't handle docking well.)

I also built a miniature missile launcher that shoots sepratrons. Turns out when they're not separating anything they have a disturbingly high TWR.

Today I launched 4 Geosychronous satellites into 60 degree orbits to cover the high latitudes of Kerbin. I also launched a resupply vehicle to rendezvous with KerbLab-1, and I changed my Duna flyby probe's trajectory by 2 degrees to get a week earlier rendezvous.

Today was mostly logistics, but I almost prefer logistics to the BIG missions. With Deadly Reentry, FAR, and Real Solar System, entry into an atmosphere, and landing on a planet turns into about 20 minutes of terror.

I thought that landing on Tylo could be interesting due to the fuel requirements, and started designing a lander. As the landing would be a part of my Laythe colonization project, the lander has to be reusable, in case I want to go there again. That turned out to be surprisingly difficult, as design after design had either too low TWR or too little delta-v (or both). Finally I relaxed my symmetry requirements, and came up with the first prototype.

MechJeb says that the lander has 6000 m/s of delta-v, if I let the LV-T30 engines burn most of the fuel from the shared fuel tank. I'm not sure if I can trust MechJeb to understand designs like this, so I'll have to check the calculations manually. I'm planning to use only the nuclear engines as far as possible, and reserve the LV-T30s for situations where high TWR is required, so maybe the real delta-v will be higher than the worst-case estimate.

This would also be my first use of a lander can for anything.

Jeb got bored today, and, as we all know, bad things happen when Jeb is bored. This time he decided to recreate a scene from Cowboy Bebop, specifically the episode "Wild Horses". Some of you are already probably thinking this is either insane, hilarious, or both, but for those who do not know the scene in question... Well, it involved a rescue mission using an old NASA space shuttle a mechanic was refurbishing in his spare time. Launched without the LFT or SRBs. Sadly, Jeb was unable to tow the modified KSO shuttle he managed to procure out to the runway with an M4 Sherman as he had hoped to do.

Main engine start! I feel sorry for Bill, first he nearly gets stranded at Eve with only Milbert for company, and now Jeb's roped him into this crazy scheme.

Shockingly enough the little sepratrons on the nose worked pretty much exactly how they were supposed to, and had to be jettisoned about half-way through their burn to keep from flipping the orbiter on its back.

In the show the internal tanks was dumped outside the atmosphere, but Jeb thought safety was for wimps and tried to ditch it in while accelerating. With the unfortunate side effect that airpressure overcame the decoupler and held it in. Oops.
