Cant get an orbit around Minmus?

I have a Minmus encounter, but whenever i burn retrograde the orbit just flips around and i end up on the way out of Minmus' SOI? What is going on?

do you have a periapse on the map before your burn ? that's where you should be burning retro.

Post a pic of your map mode encounter. Also, one of the craft you are using at the point of the capture.

You may be too far out to get a proper capture or way off plane. It happened to one of my probes to Eeloo. Or, if you are using an ion engine, the burn time is insufficient for the capture to complete.

Assuming you are burning at Minmus periapsis, I'd wager that your control pod is not facing the same way as your engines; that can happen in situations where, say, you're controlling a ship from a MEM and the engine being used is the CSMs (or vice versa). Your options are to turn around and face the other vector or to pick a different control point (one that's facing the same direction as the engine).

It sounds like your speed at that altitude is so low that you're cancelling it out and whizzing past it in an instant. Try little on/off bursts of the engine, or even just RCS instead of a main engine burn.
