Observations on new science gathering

From what I've gathered it now pays dividends to lauch manned clusters of science. Back in .22 there was no need because you could spam transmit. So far i went to minmus with 8 goos and 2 sci jr's. And from keeping all the data i was able to get full science out of all the goos(and science jr)

Unfortunately i lost the whole load on reentry-go see the parachute thread. I'll be back on minmus with a few tweaks and let you know the final count. Ill also send a goo cluster of maybe 16 to eve to test even further. These are just preliminary results so stay tuned.

Dont forget you can EVA and transfer the data from those science parts into the command module -- this way you only have to return the command module.

Which now also makes Apollo-Style landings feasible again (i.e. Spaceship + separate Lander).

Also, the new science lab means that you don´t need clusters of science, if you just equip your spaceship with a science lab (and then repeatedly dock the lander to the orbiting spaceship in order to transfer science and reset the science modules on it)

How do you get the kerbal to interact with the modules? I tried it but got no option to take data from other places than the command module itself.

You also have to be facing the right way. For the command modules and the like, that means the door to the capsule. For getting data out of the goo container and materials bay, you have to be facing the experiment's doors and be quite close (less than 0.5m away, it seems like).

I find that you can only store one of each experiment, even though you have to do them multiple times in order to get the full science. The result is that you have to fly multiple missions to get the full science. Did this make sense, or am I doing something wrong?

This is the same as in .22, a pod/experiment can always only carry one instance of a biome-experiment-combo.

A workaround would be the science container mod. (Link lost to me.)

You could still equip the science lander with two science parts each, run both in the target biome, transmit the first instance after upgrading it with the lab and returning the second.

In the future it might be nice to be able to preevaluate the data in the lab to either fully gain the return-only portion of an experiment or be able to store multiple instances in the pod after lab-processing.

Hang on, doesn't that mean you only need the one bay or goo thing to visit several biomes? I thought part of the idea of them being inoperable after transmission was to show the one time use nature of material based experiments..

I'll have to experiment with this some time.

Nope, after you removed the science from a science module, it stays inoperable.

It can only be reset with a science lab

However you can dump the module, you do not have to bring it back from Tylo to Kerbin.

You can also send a ship to Mun with multiple dockable modules, do science, gather the data, dump module and return to orbit to refuel and get another, even send an follow up mission sending more modules and fuel and continue to use the lander.
