Failed projects that never took off?

I can't recall anything that got beyond the design exploration/sketch stage and didn't eventually fly. My "Moho Apollo Style" ship never did go to Moho and probably never will, but it managed a successful (ish - some parts descended into farce) Mun mission.

I've had a few ships that I never got really to use because they failed to land though, and I play aluminium-man mode. (Which means I usually don't revert/reload, but sometimes I do.) On my Minmus kethane expedition only one ship, the big one, landed safely. The little scout craft crashed due to pilot error, and the small kethane miner due to a design flaw - it was meant to use a kethane generator to power an ion engine, which put it in a nice chicken-and-egg situation! Also my Duna lander-rover disintegrated on parachute opening over Duna, but its twin sent to Eve performed excellently.

About 80% of all the project/crafts that I build are never used in actual missions. That's because I like to experiment, I like to build stuff and let my imagination take over me. Most of those 80% are VTOLs and SSTOs (spaceplane and rockets). And I got to say, I build really a lot of crafts, that's what keep me into this game.

Never has one of my failures been so damned good looking.

Kinda bummed it did not fly well in the atmosphere, would have been good for a 2 million km orbit if it did not freak out once you turned SAS on.

How about projects who took off to be scraped.

In 0.242 I put an Moho mission in orbit but never launched it, the game wanted me to do Jool first and then I got Moho the ship was obsolete so landed the expensive science lander back on kerbin, drained and dumped the drop tanks and used the main ship as an interplanetary taxi.

I also had an Duna probe be beaten by an manned ship

Every SSTO I ever tried to build before rapiers were added and quite a few afterwards. I am awful at building planes

When I rounded off my .22 career, I intended to make a museum building with my favourite rockets and spacecraft in it. I figured it would be nice to walk amongst all the various hardware and show how it got more sophisticated as the space program matured. Somehow never could get around to it
