  1. Congratulations, Columbia! You have completed the Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge with a Stock(ish) Division entry scoring 39,725 points! I backed out the extra points for multiple landers and science labs, added in the points for 40 kerbals, and included the full mass of all the landers since the craft are definitely dedicated to the station. Well done with an attractive radial symmetry design. And although it's difficult, it's not impossible to dock landers without monoprop. Those Mk3 passenger cabins are definitely the way to go for a mass-effective kerbal count - when the challenge started back in 0.25, crew capacities tended to be a bit smaller. Feel free to add the badge to your sig. If you liked the challenge, rep is always appreciated. Well done!
  2. Congratulations, Tiaga! You have completed the Eve Rocks challenge with a Jebediah's level entry! That's one massive ship, bigger than anything I ever did for this challenge or either of my Jool-5 missions. A little chaotic on the launcher, but that tends to happen to large launchers subject to an iterative design process. Good mass optimization with the use of asparagus staging, KW tanks (which are slightly better than stock) and scores of 48-7S engines. 637 tons for a three-person pod Eve lander sounds about right. The only thing missing that would really seal the deal for me is a picture of the propulsive landing, somewhere between 60 km and touchdown, to really drive it home that this is a Jebediah's level entry. However, I can still see a bit of engine glow from the KR-2Ls in the photo of landing, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt. Feel free to add the badge to your sig. And if you enjoyed the challenge, spread around some rep!
  3. Congratulations, sephirotic! You have completed the Eve Rocks challenge with a level 1 entry! Thanks for making the three videos documenting your journey. There were a few minor niggles (such as no confirmation that you actually scored some dirt from Eve and brought it back to Kerbin) but overall, you definitely met the spirit of the challenge. Well done for doing this in stock back in 2013. I only came on board when 23.5 hit steam, so I never got to enjoy the old jittery SAS except in the demo. Kudos for doing all the docking manually - I've done it a few times, but now I'm just too lazy and let MechJeb do it. Definitely some F5/F9 usage going on, but nothing to be ashamed of for a manually piloted entry. And thanks for the great music! I detected a bit of a Russian theme - Meadowlands, Mussorgsky, and did I hear some Stravinsky? Took me back to my high school and college band days. Feel free to add the badge to your sig. And if you enjoyed the challenge, spread some rep around to Laie and the volunteer judging staff!
  4. Some of us do actually enjoy puttering about in the VAB. Building rockets out of premade parts is fun. So is using procedural parts to min/max a particular design. It's all good. :-)
  5. Finally, I can stop suffering and build that Space Shuttle.
  6. Station looks great, but watch out for the lag monster. High part counts are not your friend.
  7. Let's go with oldest first. I'll take a look at sephirotic's entry tonight. If anyone else is already looking at that one, please post to that effect and I'll move on to Lou's entry.
  8. Columbia, This looks good. I only need a few pieces of information before I can assign it a score: 1) How many kerbals are on the station? And 2) What was the mass of the station after the Munar orbit was lowered? The rules state that the orbit has to be no fewer than 10 km nor more than 1,000 km above the edge of atmosphere or surface of the body it's orbiting. The only screen shot with kinda/sorta orbital information showed the station at 1,180 km, with the apoapsis even higher than that. If you can let me know what the mass is now, and/or reduce the apoapsis so it's lower than 1,000 km and then let me know, I can score your station. One bit of clarification - there's only one 500-point bonus for a science lab, and one 1,000-point bonus for having one or more landers. More labs and more landers can look cool, but they unfortunately don't count for additional points. Don't worry about recalculating the score - I'll handle it after you provide those two bits of information. Thanks!
  9. I never use the 2x3 solar arrays. I always go for the 1x6s.
  10. If you're looking to loft heavy loads, there is a trifecta of mods which work extremely well together - SpaceY, Kerbal Joint Reinforcement, and Claw's Stock Bug Fixes. With those three in place you can loft some serious payloads with only a handful of struts. I used these in my Last Hurrah for Stock Aero thread -http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/115629-A-Last-Hurrah-for-Stock-Aero
  11. Optimizing for payload mass ratio is different from optimizing for rocket mass or for cost. Mainsail and big S1 SRBs are my favorite combination for cost- effective medium-heavy loads. You can see this technique with my LPC station over in the Grand Orbital Space Station Challenge thread. There was also a good thread on efficiency a while ago - don't recall the name though.
  12. Ethanadams, have you been to college? There's an awful lot of material out there in terms of philosophy classes, journal articles, and books which would help inform your opinions on the matter. Speaking for myself, one of my favorite courses in college was "The Philosophy of Human Conflict" which explored why we as a race keep fighting ourselves in an organized manner. Just war theory, gang warfare, and Mutual Assured Destruction were all discussed in detail. Speaking more generally, anything created by man can be used for good or evil. Humanity is the wild card, not the technology.
  13. Here's another one from a time when I sent an orbital kethane refinery to Jool. The refinery had two scanning probes, two landers, and a kethane miner/tanker all attached at launch with nary a fairing in sight.
  14. Nope on the midgets. The US one - it's one of many towns in California's central valley. The nearest bustling metropolis is Fresno.
  15. I actually drove through Kerman last week. Meh.
  16. One of the best quotes so far. Have some rep.
  17. I'm not at home right now, but I believe neither does a TT-70 - all you have to do is go back to the space center, then into the tracking station, select your craft again, and voila! All the TT-70 dot thingies are gone!
  18. Just because this seems to be spinning a bit off into the weeds - "last hurrah" noun: a last effort, production, or appearance: a final often valedictory effort, production, or appearance <his unsuccessful Senate run was his last hurrah  R. W. Daly> I'm not praising or condemning the attributes of stock aero - I'm just saying goodbye with a fitting finale.
  19. Columbia, it's -2 points per ton on the pad, so there's some incentive for efficiency. If you include enough comfortable seats on the station, it doesn't end up mattering too much. 2,000 tons isn't all that big in my book.
  20. I'd also be willing to help out with review. Laie, just give the word. Any reviewer should indicate which one they're going to review to avoid duplication of effort.
  21. Never used it. Not even once. FLT-100 is as small as I ever go in stock KSP. Now that I'm finally getting into small tanks in RO, procedural tanks are where it's at.
  22. TT-38 for small 1.25m parts, TT-70 for anything larger. Also running Claw's stock bug fixes to prevent the "rotate in and smash the center stack" phenomenon. And of course, SpaceY's radial decouplers rock for anything really big.
  23. Stock aero, your days are numbered. Although you had your quirks, we knew ye well. As a tribute to you and the sort of radial-staged silliness you put up with, please accept this final offering - 25,000 tons of the finest onion-staged SpaceY parts. Farewell, stock aero. Edit: Because some people are misunderstanding my intent, the craft is the "last hurrah", using the book definition of a final, often valedictory (farewell) effort, production, or appearance. In other words, this is my last crazy craft in stock aero before 1.0 comes out. I've also added a wink icon above to make it a bit more clear.
