I have a funny little bug to report that may be already known. It appears that FAR doesn't properly update the craft's CoL in the SPH with regard to its orientation. The plane nevertheless flies fine; it's just a building issue. In specific, it seems that instead of recalculating the CoL, it simply rotates/transforms the CoL about some pre-determined reference point, which is problematic for rotations when your plane is not on that axis. Grr. Unfortunately it appears I don't have images to show for this because my computer crashed hard while I was writing this post the first time.- 14,073 replies

In the meantime, you can start KSP by directly using the executable. It should be in your KSP directory, wherever that is. (By default it installs to C:\\Kerbal Space Program on Windows boxes, sans Steam.)

Are you sure you need more wing? I've found that most of the times when I thought that, the answer actually was that I needed more thrust. Spaceplanes tend to have tiny wings for their payloads compared to other planes. -

Just to throw a wrench in the works a bit: If we're talking about the most efficient method (in this simple one-body gravity system we have) then suicide burns are also the best method because you further maximize the gravity turn effect. And to address the earlier discussion, yes, a 45 degree line is a better tangent approximation to a landing ellipse, which is why it conserves fuel over 2 perpendicular burns. But you know what's an even better approximation? An ellipse. Any landing burn, suicide or otherwise, is going to use much less dV if you point it retrograde at all times. -

Wanderfound, thanks a ton for the stuff you wrote up about aerodynamic analysis and building. A lot of it I knew or sort-of-knew already, but much of it was very helpful. I've already detected several changes I'd like to try in my designs and my design process. Funnily enough, I disagree with you about the flaps. I find it very helpful to make my nose canards act as flaps, and then for final approach I put them on setting 1 or 2 to naturally flare the plane for landing. Using them at the same time as properly balanced spoilers can even raise the nose without causing you to gain altitude. (I'm aware this is exactly not conventional aeronautical wisdom.) -

wasmic has the right of it; total acceleration due to a constant force (in this case gravity) is a function of time. Therefore, the longer you spend falling into a gravity well, the more dV (that is, acceleration) you need to counteract it. Take Earth's gravity at sea level for a very simple example. If I spend 1 second subjected to 10m/s^2 of acceleration, I need 10m/s dV to counteract its effects. If I spend 2 seconds subjected to 10m/s^2 acceleration, I need 20m/s dV to counteract its effects. When you burn too early, you slow yourself downn, meaning you spend more time subjected to the force without the countervailing force of the body's surface. ETA: It has nothing to do with TWR or the delta mass of your ship at all.
