Should the Skipper remain unchanged?
Frozen_Heart replied to AVeryNiceSpacePenguin's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Her style was heavily based on Nova's, and designed to match it perfectly. -
Should the Skipper remain unchanged?
Frozen_Heart replied to AVeryNiceSpacePenguin's topic in KSP1 Discussion
If the entire game was still in the Nova style parts then it would be fine. As it's clear KSP is not going for that aesthetic anymore i'd rather it got an overhaul. -
Realism in Stock KSP
Frozen_Heart replied to VoidCosmos's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
KSP walks the line between being realistic enough to educate people about spaceflight, while being easy and game like enough for anyone to just pick up and play in an instant. It's this that has made it so successful. Making it full realism would make the game too difficult and unenjoyable for the average person to play and would be bad for KSP overall. I'm happy with where the realism/game aspect sits currently.- 96 replies

1.7 Airplane Part Redesigns
Frozen_Heart replied to SpaceCube2000's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
The porkjet parts look new and fit with the stock style. There are plenty of old parts from 0.18 or something like that which could still be redone. -
Engines you wish were added.
Frozen_Heart replied to Xurkitree's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Yep 100% agree there. Even if they used new models and textures rather than Porkjets, they would still both fill really important roles. LV-T15 would be perfect for clustering on 1.875m rockets, which would be great for Falcon 9 replicas. Meanwhile the LV-303 would be a nice second stage for 1.25m rockets as the current Terrier engine is stupidly overpowered for it. Also who is the downvote fairy on the suggestions forum? Every post I see on here is always at 1 star. -

Just looking at those screenshots kills my framerate. They look great though! -

I found the thermometers just weren't working. The cubic struts were what i found worked best after that. -
So I've been continuing my little adventure into stock bearings, and in the process have managed to come up with this: Link: http://bit.ly/2CN5vx3 Requirments: Making History (I'm working on finding a stock part which will do the job) The autogyro MkVI is massivly improved compared to its earlier iterations. Contra-rotating rotors mean that it's easy to control, and the rebuilt bearing keeps it spinning smoothly at all times (warranty void if 10G turns are attempted). The unique nature of an autogyro means that the aircraft essentially can't stall, as the spinning blades just cause it to gradually sink while full control is retained. This allows great low speed handling and near VTOL landings with some practice. The tolerances on the bearing are extremely tight, which is what allows it to spin with such precision. However due to the high amounts of force on the lower section of the bearing i've been forced to use the making history plates (good colliders, autostrut capable, and light). I'm going to try to find an alternate part in later versions. Here is a video of it in action to demonstrate the low speed handling:

Frozen_Heart replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Went through working out which parts behaved best in a bearing. Cubic struts worked well for the top part, but annoyingly the flat plates from MH were the only bit that could deal with the stress on the lower end of the rotor. Want to find a non dlc part for it. -

I think it's approaching release ready. It's controllable, it looks good, AND it doesn't explode randomly. -

Nah I tamed the Kraken a while ago. Rode it to Eeloo and back as a mount. -

Armed with a newfound knowledge of colliders i'm progressing my research further: -
Using bearings made of thermometers and the one way RCS blocks atm. It's pretty unreliable but while it's working runs super smooth. The rotor being unpowered means it can be a lot smaller too.

Been on a bit of a KSP break for a while so don't think i've posted anything here for a year or more. I was clicking around youtube recently and stumbled upon the existence of gyrocoptors. I was intrigued and started to wonder if such a thing would work in KSP. Well turns out the answer is yes... kindoff. Presenting the gyrocoptor MkIV: http://bit.ly/2Q1hhb1 My first version that is controllable (on a good day), and doesn't fall into pieces when the rotor spins too fast (sometimes) It's extremely easy to operate and works for just pulling stunts round the KSC. It's unique characteristics mean that it flies much like an aircraft on takeoff, but for landing it can use the blades momentum to keep itself in the air and essentially put itself down on the spot. Lack of blade pitch control however is a huge issue, meaning that at low blade speeds it tips to the left, and high blade speeds cause it to tip to the right. Anyway have fun, and try not to kill too many kerbals testing it. (My main hope here is that a more skilled builder comes along and makes a decent one )

How does that mod work? Does it simply show the parts colliders? If so that could be very useful. -

Further tweaks means the rotor only falls off once every two flights now. It's also slightly controllable.... sometimes. Really need to learn how to build good bearings. -

Frozen_Heart replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Realised that due to lack of cyclic pitch control, a single rotor wasn't feasible so went to a pair going in opposite directions. Both rotors are completely unpowered. This time it flies well and is easily controllable. Takeoff and landing are a breeze. -

I've realised I've never seen an autogyro in KSP, so decided to see if it's possible. Seems the answer is yes. At least in theory. I don't have the bearing skills of Azimech or Squiddy so it keeps shaking itself apart. -

Woah. That's pretty freaky lol. I should probably give that mod a try. -
Life support system
Frozen_Heart replied to Cassel's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I'd like to see life support, but in a simplified kerbal way, rather than going full detail on it. Aka it should be a single resource (maybe called supplies) which kerbals slowly use over time. However when it runs out they don't die, they simply hibernate. They would wake up when more supplies are delivered. This keeps life support as an important consideration, while still remaining easy to understand for casual or new players by cutting down on micromanagement. The command pods should carry some, and the various modules which can hold kerbals. There should also be some varying sized supply crates, and maybe a greenhouse module which would be a similar size to the science lab, and would actively generate small amounts of supplies over time when crewed and supplied with electricity. -
