Black hole starship engines : Whoa
nhnifong replied to Minecrafter1's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I find the "meduso-anthropic" principle mentioned at the end to be the most interesting part. If universes exist inside the black holes of other universes, perhaps there is some relation between the properties of the black hole and the universe within. Our universe appears to be expanding, but not staying constant. Perhaps it is a natural black hole that is eating matter steadily and not an artificial one being held constant for the purpose of energy production. -

I'm a bit confused. Does this gamma radiation come from the accretion disk or is it all Hawking radiation? Wouldn't you be getting a bit of both, and therefore not getting your full 100% efficiency? -
It's nice to read your multifaceted and interesting opinion on Chinese history Cesrate. I'm glad that we have the opportunity to hear it straight from a citizen such as yourself. Life is experienced from many perspectives, and It's cool that the net gives us the opportunity to hear from our friends around the planet. Now I just need to practice a few more languages...

[PLUGIN+PARTS][0.23] SCANsat terrain mapping
nhnifong replied to damny's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Thanks for the update! -
I'm getting kernel panics from trying to unlock kethane parts in the tech tree. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? I've never even seen software cause kernel panics. It's usually a hardware problem, but it seems to reliably happen whenever I try to unlock kethane parts. EDIT: redownloaded kethane, md5 hash of this file is the same as the old. It's not corruption.

I just started playing with this again, I have many questions, hopefully with obvious answers. :/ sorry It's just so hard to search through hundreds of pages. Is this the mod that added radiation? I see the pods have an indication of nano-Sieverts. where can I read about this mechanic? is there anything I can do to protect my kerbals? What are the deadly cumulative levels and is there any way to know how much any given kerbal has accumulated? The radiators don't open, although they do function. Are they supposed to be automatic? Will I be able to close them if I need to?

Elon Musk : "Retire on Mars" : feasible?
nhnifong replied to BrickedKeyboard's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Why has there been such limited study of closed loop ecosystems in space? Would it be helpful if we got together and designed a cube sat to investigate this? -
You are bound by a cosmic spell that only lets you have three different things. You may have as much of these as you want, however you are not allowed to sell them or trade them for anything else. You can only aquire other goods and services by making them from raw materials (which can come from the unlimited three things) and by doing everything yourself. If the service must be performed in the presense of things you don't have, they will be supplied, but you can't keep them. If the good must be delivered, or stored in a container, one will be supplied for you. What do I mean by "different things"? A good or service can be considered identical to another good or service if they both have UPC codes which are the same, OR if one could be interchanged with the other, without a renegotiation of contract. For example, If you are paying for maid service, and you would have to ask them to change something about what they do, then that would be a different service. Remember, asking for money is pretty pointless, as you aren't allowed to trade your unlimited items. (unless you make something out of them) Be creative! I would request: Free "chef's special" from a nice resturant. High-efficiency photovoltaic power generation kits. Land I intend to install zillions of solar power generating plants and sell power to the masses while eating for free Until I can afford a place to stay from the revenue of my power plants, I will live in a shelter made of photovoltaic panels.

Why is the materials bay locked?
nhnifong replied to nhnifong's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Well, I landed (still didn't work), went to the space center and came back and then it started working. -
I want to get the upper atmosphere reading but the materials bay is locked. Why? How do I unlock it?

Last dream I was in a giant labyrinthian library searching for a book that would tell me what temperature lignin denatures at. Every time I tried to put down my stuff someone would attempt to steal it.

Ameteur engineers don't often have the tools and the work space and the parts to do this. All I've got is a soldering iron, one spool of wire, and a couple LEDs. I made a light up shirt once

Short for fracturing, it is a process of injecting soapy water (with other unknown chemicals) at high pressure into a gas well in order to break the rock into lots of little peices, which lets the natural gas escape more easily.

I think fracking probably has a chance of contaminating aquifers. Contaminating aquifers is a terrible thing, and fracking should not have been deployed so quickly before sufficient tests could have been done in a controlled remote location. In general, the continued use of fossil fuels has an excessive enviromental cost. It could be avoided with a switch to renewable energy but corruption and greed have left us stuck in our ways.

Why don't you pick one of these http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_free_electronics_circuit_simulators
