  1. I use the lander cans for reentry all the time. The trick is to either use enough parachutes to get your velocity down below 6m/s, or use legs or another to keep the pod from hitting directly. Hell, if you have a heat shield on it, the heat shield will take the brunt of the force and leave the lander can intact. They should probably make the 2 man can lighter and have them easily overheat in reentry regardless of whether or not you have a heat shield.
  2. I'm kind of the opposite. I'm not sure why, but when you have 1/8th resolution textures going (as I do, in order to keep the game from crashing constantly), it looks absolutely terrible, far worse than just about any other part at that resolution, save maybe the Mk1 cockpit. Then there's the alignment of the hatch, which is ~125 degrees off of everything else...
  3. I could have sworn I read something about a no politics rule somewhere...
  4. About the best free one I've found is Lightworks. It has a somewhat steep learning curve, but I don't think someone who plays KSP will have too much trouble with that. From what I've seen so far, it can do probably 80-90% what Sony Vegas or Final Cut Pro can do...just not as easily.
  5. We had some really heavy haze at around sundown, but for once no clouds. They do that for solar eclipses for sure. Not sure about lunar eclipses, but there were tons of aircraft in the sky tonight, far more than usual, so I think that small plane owners at least use it as an excuse for some night flying...
  6. I'm on the west coast of the US and we had some very heavy haze, so totality was just barely visible. Managed to get a few decent photos though:
  7. Unless there's another article of the OST or other treaty you're not quoting, that's not how it reads. It says there's no weapons testing of any kind on the moon, and no military activities. This still allows conventional weapons, so long as they're there for "peaceful activities". So a firearm in a survival kit (like the TP-82, which was used as part of the Soyuz kit up until 2006) would still be legally allowed, assuming its there in case you need to defend yourself from wild animals while awaiting pickup back on Earth. This is a bit...off. First, while the president does have sole discretionary authority concerning foreign nations, any treaty has to be approved by the majority of the Senate. Any deal reached that isn't approved by the Senate is basically an Executive Order, and can be either overturned by the Congress (provided they can get enough votes to override a veto), or it can simply be revoked by the next president. Second, (and I'll admit this is a bit nitpicky) all treaties are subservient to the US Constitution, so they're not quite on the same plane. Otherwise, any treaty could effectively amend the constitution, skipping over the whole 3/4 of Congress and ratification by 3/4 of all states requirement. Anyway, as far as the OST treaty goes, my guess is it will last right up until the point that technology reaches the point where it is no longer convenient to not break it. Right now, aside from WMD testing and/or having WMD's stationed in LEO, most of what the treaty is concerned with is technologically unfeasible enough that no one can really break it in a big way anyway. Just as soon as that changes, someone will break it, and other nations will then withdraw from the treaty in order to maintain a competitive edge.
  8. I try to keep partcounts under 100 in order to keep my FPS "reasonable" (i.e., over 4). I almost never have a green timer, unless my partcount is under 30 or so.
  9. I tried signing up in order to report the bug, but I never received a confirmation email. How do you report a bug in the bug tracker?
  10. I would say having my parachutes fail, followed closely by plane landings.
  11. Everything's on Ultra Low. Perhaps Squad should do playthoughs using something other than the highest settings, then...
  12. Been to the moon many times, but today is the first time I found a Mun arch (I found the Kraken on Bop long before I got around to visiting any of the Mun arches). I saw it on the north rim of the East Crater while landing my craft, and I decided to go check it out after landing. Two observations: 1. They're much bigger than I realized: That little white dot is Bob. 2. Maaaybe Squad should consider placing these things by hand: Bob ponders the anti-gravity technology of the Mun arches. I get that when you procedurally generate land, this kind of thing happens. For example, it's fairly common to find things like this in The Elder Scrolls games. However, those are massive worlds with tons of procedurally generated content. It would take too long to check everything to make sure nothing's sticking out like this. OTOH, there are only a few landmarks of note in KSP, so it should be fairly easy to check this stuff out and fix it...
  13. I'll probably be switching over to Linux just to play KSP at some point, since my Windows is 32bit.
  14. 1024x768 or 1280x800, depending on what I'm playing on.
  15. 4MB... I used to have more, but the game kept crashing, so I got rid of everything I didn't consider necessary.
  16. I have issues with both of them*, but I'd say I prefer the new one. *Old Mk1 - Has what are apparently air-intakes, but they don't function. The texture is also....old, and looks old. New Mk1 - The door position seems a little low and may be difficult to make work with ladders. It also sort of looks like a side-by-side two-seater at first glance.
  17. I take it you're enjoying the 100+ degree heat?
  18. Why not both? Although, since the other versions of Mint are Ubuntu-based, sticking with them gives you access to the Ubuntu depositories, which probably have the largest selection of Linux-based software. Not sure if you get those with LMDE. Debian is also somewhat less user-friendly; it will require you learn more right off the bat. As for desktops, at least for Mint I prefer MATE, but that's mostly because it's fairly lean. Cinnamon is quite pretty, and KDE isn't bad either, but they're both a bit more resource intensive. The nice thing is you can have multiple desktop environments installed and switch between them fairly easily, so you can try them out.
  19. 5/10, since it's a placeholder...
  20. Saturn V. Could there be any other? And I suppose the Delta IV Heavy. Only actual rocket I've made a repro of in KSP, mostly because it's fairly easy to do with the Orange Tanks and mainsails. It probably is due to compression distortion, but image manipulation did exist long before Photoshop, and the Soviets were well acquainted with the technique.
  21. I have never killed Jeb...permanently.
  22. There are actually six radial decouplers: four for the boosters, two for the satellite. Basically, I built a sling for it: Because only one of the modular girders are directly attached to the Rockomax Adapter (the other is just attached using struts), when the structural pylons fire, one of the "arms" is completely detached, giving the craft room to maneuver while reducing the risk of breaking something. I also turned down the decouple force to around 10 percent for the same reason.
  23. I rescued Bob, who had been stranded on Duna for a decade or so, and then made this thing: I launched it in this:
