Thank you for you answers. @_Augustus_ : about Orion docking missions : I don't think you can stick an Orion on top of an ariane 5 or 6. Anyway the ariane 5 is not rated for human flight, its installations in Guyana dont allow crewed vehicles launches... And you can't strap 4boosters to an ariane 5... I think Delta 4 will do

Is this enough fuel to get me home?
Hcube replied to CaptainApollo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Your periapsis is very low and apoapsis very high : you should be able to do it without problem. Coast to Apoapsis and there burn retrograde (slowly) until your periapsis goes down to about 25-30km. Dont be afraid to bring the periapsis very low or even inside the surface if you have a heatshield ! pretty sure 30 units of fuel will do the job, and with a margin -
Just wondering about a few things : (can't say that i did an exhaustive search, but a 30s look up told me nothing about this) What engines will be on the first stage of the SLS part from the 2SRBs ? I heard about SSMEs, but how many of them ? will they be modified ? will they have enough thrust to lift this monster ? What engines will run on the second stage if the SLS ? I read somewhere that the future Ariane 6's Vinci engine built by Snecma was considered to be used, but it has ridiculously low thrust (although amazing Isp). Is this still ongoing ? if so, will there be a cluster of those ? If not, what engines ? (PS ; when is the first SLS flight planned ?) (feel free to correct any english mistakes i made, that would help me improve in english)

Is this enough fuel to get me home?
Hcube replied to CaptainApollo's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
it depends, what's your orbit right now ? Just give us the Apoapsis and the Periapsis values. You also need to tell us what the mass of your ship is (ship icon on the right in map view) or what parts it is made of. Otherwise it´s pretty impossible to tell. -
Specific Impulse Questions for Delta V
Hcube replied to srbbnd's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Yeah, since the change in Isp is gradual (right click an engine on ascent and you will see its thrust rising as you gain altitude, and for the same fuel consumption) you almost have a vacuum Isp @35km. For example, the 909 sucks on the ground but has a good Isp in vacuum : you will already be getting about 50.5 kN (vacuum is 60) of thrust at only 35-40km, although perfect vacuum is 35km higher. As long as you use proper lifter engines for first stage (don't try to liftoff with a poodle or 909) , you shouldn't have to worry about that. -

Yeah the Atlas 5 sometimes does that i tried but my attempts were just like yours, difference being that they didnt surf (yes it means that they crashed miserably).
-
Oh i see what you meant. Not sure about the ascent profile data ; but i'm pretty sure that if you dig deep enough you will find some very interesting info. It seems that the CNES, ESA and Arianespace websites give very limited info on this. What orbits were the payloads delivered to ? GTO ? If so, the second stage may have burnt non-stop between LEO injection and boost to GTO, and then released the satellites soon after shutdown while coasting to apoapsis.

Yeah Vega is about the size and mass of one of Ariane 5 's EAP (SRBs). The Ariane being heavier means nothing about its TWR relative to vega, since it also has more thrust... or were you talking about something different ?
-
The fact is, they don't work. ( don't work as expected). Their mass, separation, drag, and building issues generally make it a better deal not to use them.
-
Liftoff TWR is 1.82 , but Ariane 5 does not clear its tower faster than Vega. Vega lifts off like a bullet. Have you noticed how the actual liftoff is 7seconds after the 0:00 mark ? i wonder why the Vulcain 2 ignition sequence isn't started 7seconds sooner... All the other rockets time the ignition sequence so that the liftoff occurs at 0:00

Nice fairing respiration I wish we had this in KSP too !
-
http://www.arianespace.tv/ ? nothing particular here. It works fine... Although im in France, maybe the stream does not get updated everywhere at the same time Always impressed by how thin and small the umbilical tower is for Ariane 5 - - - Updated - - - LIFTOFF !
-
It actually is...
-
Need. To. Sleep... I hope the launch is early in the window EDIT : Stream started ! I whish the french guys spoke french... their english is... weird. FR subbed in english would have been good

Some rockets actually fly with a single SRB

What new parts could the game realistically use?
Hcube replied to Frostiken's topic in KSP1 Discussion
A 2.5m ion engine ? really ? That's not the point of an ion engine... W.H.Y? -
-
i want a red, mercury-like LES too ! By the way, why the hell do we get the LES before we get the corresponding Mk3 pod in the tech tree ?
-
Agreed with the SAS and ore tanks, but these are heavy launcher parts, they are not supposed to be docked... and the 2.5m battery already feels huge and lasts pretty much forever, do you really need a bigger one ? I would love some 3.75m adapters and bi-tri-quadcouplers myself. We only have a single huge empty long and heavy one

Suggesting a new navigation ball vector
Hcube replied to Catapadurariu's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
just... just use RCS ? I think that not being able to dock without RCS (or having a very hard time doing it) is actually a good and interesting feature Welcome to the forums by the way ! -
Insurgency is probaby better. All the good sides of CSGO, without the annoying ones. And it's very realistic and breath-taking
-
The thing that bothers me most with drag now is how it is modeled in relation with part occlusion. Try making a cluster of a few LV-T30 under a 2.5m core (say an orange tank) and activate the aerodynamic vectors overlay. You will get a ton of drag due to cubic octagonal struts and engines, and you won't need any fins even if your rocket is very un-aerodynamic and not streamlined. you can have just a few orange tanks, a big cluster, and a HUGE bulky and fat fairing on top, and it'll fly straight. EDIT : about your question about the fairings : they actually add more drag than what the average payload inside would add if left unshielded. That could answer some of your problems. Not to mention they are crazy heavy ! But let's not start another fairing complaint thread here
