Tylo VS Laythe VS Duna - To Kolonize or not to kolonize?
Findthepin1 replied to Sharkman Briton's topic in KSP1 Discussion
In the game, I'd do Duna. It's close, it has solar power, and the cons outweigh the pros for a Joolian moon colony. 0.3 g is a bit low, but they're never going back home anyway. HOWEVER. However, realistically I'd choose Tylo. It is probably an icy object, a bigger, dusty version of Vall (explaining the relatively low density and the fact that it formed out near Jool, where there probably isn't much rock for moon formation), and is close enough to Jool that it probably has a global subsurface ocean like Vall. This gives you the opportunity to build a large surface base, with the opportunity to study a potential habitat without leaving the ground, but without a significant risk of damaging that environment. Also, it gives you the opportunity to have operations going on on Vall without irradiating yourself, and to have stuff going on on Laythe too, without any large risk of contaminating the environment there. It has high gravity. There are some things about Tylo, however, that aren't preferable to Laythe or Duna. Tylo doesn't have a magnetic field, this is evidenced by the fact that it has practically no atmosphere despite being a tiny bit larger than Kerbin and cold. Laythe has a magnetic field, this is because it rotates faster, fast enough for a dynamo in the mantle. This is why Laythe still has its atmosphere. The radiation environment on Tylo is probably comparable to that on Ike. Duna has a lower rad level because it has an atmosphere. I still would choose Tylo because Laythe and Duna are environments which should be protected from anything not sterilized very thoroughly. Laythe and Duna can have life on them, actually many high-altitude or polar plants could survive in both those environments. Yet they seem dead, which means we should keep them dead so we can learn all about them before anything destructive happens. If life should be found on Laythe or Duna, the life-bearing areas would be evacuated and preserved to the best of our ability. You don't have to worry about that on Tylo or Vall. Tylo is better than Vall because the former has less radiation and more gravity. -
So. I realized that basically everyone has flown Jeb. Now I have this idea. What if every Jebediah Kerman that we all fly was the SAME INDIVIDUAL? How many missions would he have flown? What's Jeb done in your save file? I'll add it to the MISSION LIST section, and update the TOTAL MISSIONS and MISSIONS BY OBJECT sections. Oh by the way my Jeb's missions aren't included. I have long forgotten the last time I used Jeb for something. An object in a 720 day orbit around KIC 8462852 would be something with a semimajor axis near the inner edge of the habitable zone. About the analogue distance to where Earth is from the Sun. Comets aren't stable that close to a star. If the anomaly is indeed in a 720 day orbit, it wouldn't have any icy materials on it because a 720 day orbit's apoapsis is theoretically at most 4.1 AU from this star in particular. Sol's frost line is at 5 AU, and this star is significantly bigger than Sol. Its frost line would be much further away, maybe 10 or 12 AU, I don't know. Comets then are ruled out. If I'm wrong, because most people still talk about it being comets, please let me know.

Rockets launching over land for reuseability
Findthepin1 replied to legoclone09's topic in Science & Spaceflight
If you're on a flight from San Francisco or Los Angeles to just about every major city on the US East Coast, you have to go over the Mojave. -
1s are indistinguishable from 7s unless you're me, or know me well. Lowercase P's look like +'s. So does T. G looks like 6. Only D, E, and P have a lowercase form. Lowercase letters are only used in mathematics. 1, 7, and 2 look the same. 4 is open.

Name = United Kerbol Traveling Circuses (UKTC) Report: We have a reusable Minmus transit vehicle ready to take off and be used at least once. We can't do anything with it because it's unmanned, Minmus is unmanned, and we can' launch anything because a transdimensional rift opened in the VAB. Nothing we do changes objects that were in the VAB when the rift opened unless it's done on both sides of the rift. Speaking of which, our friends on the other side, the Universal Kerbal Tour Company (UKTC) also can't launch anything, but for the likely unrelated reason of their leader 1PinTheFind procrastinating because he doesn't to risk the chance of having to send a SECOND Duna rescue mission. Score: C+

Representing earth; what should we give aliens if they show up?
Findthepin1 replied to Norpo's topic in Science & Spaceflight
First, we need to establish that we will not harm them, and get them not to take offence to what we say, because there are likely large cultural differences that could easily lead to a misunderstanding. Then we tell them everything about how afraid we are of aliens, and how the media portrays them. Then, if they don't take offence, we give them our math and physics and stuff, and ask for theirs. There might be something they missed that we realized, or vice versa. Then we share technology like spaceship tech, quantum computers, etc. and the less obvious tech like medicines, food growing techniques, etc. We need a way to communicate quickly over long distances, something I assume they have if they can reasonably communicate with their home while hundreds of lightyears away. Eventually we should form a sort of governing council made up of both civilizations, represented equally, and try to find other civilizations to join. We'd be one of the first civilizations to arise, methinks. Oh, by the way. It would be funny if one of us on the forums was, like, Elon Musk or somebody, and we didn't know. XD -
I feel like I need to share this. It's funny. Today my teacher said water has a moderating effect on the climate. I said it's because water vapour is a greenhouse gas, and it traps heat during the night. I was going to mention the fact that the Amazon area is humid, and stays almost the same temperature day or night, and that the Sahara area is dry, and has a very large temperature difference relative to the Amazon, but I didn't get a chance to. They said "Water vapour isn't considered a greenhouse gas." I got somebody to look it up. I was right. It was like: Me: "It's the greenhouse effect. (blahblahblah explanation)." Teacher: "Water vapour isn't considered a greenhouse gas." Me: "Yes, it is. The-" Teacher: "No." Me (strained laughing): "Somebody look this up, please." Person whose name will not be written here for privacy's sake: "It is. He's right. He should be our teacher." Quiet laughs, murmured agreement Teacher (smiling): "…No" I laugh The teacher ended up not letting me talk for the remainder of the period because they thought I was going to bring the subject up again, while they went on to talk about how chlorofluorocarbons are produced and why they were banned on Earth, without mentioning their extreme role as a greenhouse gas, and about how continental drift is "evidenced" by the fact that people walked across the Bering Strait thousands of years ago. I tried to help, believe me. It was a fun day. I have heard such statements from my teachers before. A different one once said that primates have been around for 10 billion years, and anatomically modern humans for 20 million. I corrected them by telling them the age of the Earth. Everyone agreed with me. That was another fun day. P.S. I'm probably wrong about the water vapour holding heat at night thing. Please let me know.

We are all murderers - how many Kerbals did you kill?

Probably something like 10 not counting messed up things that were rewinded and fixed. Including those, the number goes up by an order of magnitude. -

Thanks. It isn't a career save. Does that still work with sandbox saves?

XD I have an Ideaâ„¢! I can copy the Transit Vehicle craft file to another computer and play there. I will have to *HyperEdit* the ship into orbit, but it'll be worth it and I'll also have to select a new crew. Here goes.
-
The VAB is very buggy right now. It won't let me edit the Transit Vehicle, it won't let me open a craft or make a new craft, it won't show me parts when I list them by name, it won't give me a flag. This *might* slightly hinder the mission, but I'll try what I can. I have selected the crew, but it won't let me add them. We have Hilly, Melald, Erke, and Dagrid Kerman! Hilly is the pilot of the mission. Melald is the engineer. Erke and Dagrid are scientists. Right now the VAB isn't letting me build a vehicle to get everybody to the ship, or anything besides dozens of fully overlapping parts without size information needed for launch, so the mission is postponed until I find a solution.

Well, I am doing a mission to Minmus if all goes well. I have a lander-orbiter, my general-use Orbital Activity Vehicle, but it's not meant for extended use. So, I must build a Transit Vehicle to get to Minmus. (The OAV can technically support kerbals for an infinite time but I want it to be realistic because I might write a story about it). I plan to not bring a rover. I am calling this mission Boreas 1 after Boreas the Greek god of the north wind, or whatever he is. Boreas 1. I had to delete all my mods except HyperEdit in order to launch the transit vehicle. I did not, and will not, use HyperEdit in this trip. I don't really use it anymore after Bob Kerman's desert incident. Anyway, this'll be the mission thread. There are pictures. EDIT: The funny thing is, I deleted OPM to be able to do the mission. The save file is called OPM Sandbox. SECOND EDIT: I broke the VAB. No items show up in the selector under the "name" category, and under the "mass" category everything shows up, including kerbals and flags. Also, the mission flag is stuck as a picture of a kerbal because I can't open the flag selection menu. Apparently this happened when I deleted my mods. THIRD EDIT: Everything seems to be fixed and the mission is progressing as normal. Part 1 is below. Part 2 Part 3 Part 4 PART 1: LAUNCH I'm just going to post pictures here for now. The launch of the Transit Vehicle was uneventful except for that I had to use the nuke engines to get into a stable orbit. Transit Vehicle on launchpad: Launching: Dropping the boosters: Safely in orbit: The Transit Vehicle is almost fully fuelled and is unkerballed at the moment. I need a better launch vehicle so that I don't have to use the nuke engines to make orbit. Next we'll meet the crew.

Wow. Laythe looks very tropical in that. I imagine Laythe as a nearly lifeless world, the only life deep in the seas because of radiation, and the whole moon almost completely frozen except near the equator. I like this version of it. It's much more habitable.
