[1.3] Kerbal Joint Reinforcement v3.3.3 7/24/17
Drillgorg replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I have a bug to report. The Klaw's free pivot option does not work with this mod installed. I had to uninstall the mod, line my ship up with the center of mass of the asteroid, then reinstall the mod. Would love to see a fix for this, as this is an essential mod for me.- 2,647 replies

What is wrong with you guys? Ungrateful! This is the best feature I've seen in KSP in a long time. By far my favorite new feature in 1.1. Keep rockin' it SQUAD!

Hi, question about the ore concentration overlay. Why is it that I can scan all the biomes on a planet/moon with ground scanners, and yet if I set the cutoff to say, 70% there will be no ore? Shouldn't the cutoff show the highest concentration on the planet/moon as 100%? Should I be using the narrow band scanner? Last time I used it, it didn't show very much detail. I've been trying to find a concentration over 8.25% on Ike.

Landing Height, Protractor, Kerbal Joint Reinforcement, S.A.V.E., Navball docking alignment indicator. I basically play stock but with some "fixes".

dear squad, about the duna signal....

What is the Duna signal? -
Highest Ore Concentration found on Minmus Surface?
Drillgorg replied to rhadamant's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Perhaps the flats are naturally low in ore content, to make Minmus more challenging? It is a pretty obvious refueling depot. -
This one?

I believe their drag gets added to the parent part too?

Resource Mining - Impressions and Questions
Drillgorg replied to Bobe's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Hey, can I use an asteroid as a heat sink? Giving each nuke its own grabbing unit to attach to the asteroid would be hilarious. And BTW I think you're doing a great job Roverdude. -

So, anyone else planning to mine a class E near Kerbin asteroid, continually generating fuel to propel the asteroid? I want to attempt to push a very large asteroid into Kerbin orbit this way, then use it as a gas station. I think it will depend in how much ore the asteroids actually hold. -

I don't see the problem. Literally the only thing they omitted is the time warp. You still have to achieve a polar orbit to scan the whole planet. And forcing us to do it in real time without time warp would be awful. And even better, the planetary scan is vague and not suitable for mining. You still need the local scanners to actually get good concentrations of ore. -

Can you show us ground scans too? And am I right in thinking that the narrow band data is only visible with the scanner turned on, it doesn't get permanently added to the planetary map? -

I bet the bottom of the Mohole is a 100% rich ore vein. -

@Roverdude Bravo. As someone who hasn't played Kethane or Karbonite (or 1.0 yet, I'm waiting for 1.0.1) I think that stock sounds great. This is what I understand of the mission profile: send a probe to polar orbit with the global scanner to get a rough idea of where the good ore is. Then send down some ground scanner probes to where you think the good ore is, they'll give you good enough resolution to pick a landing site. Maybe a rover(dude) with the ground scanner would be even better. Finally, send your factory down with the narrow band scanner turned on, so you can land right on the best ore vein. I can definitely see myself sending out a factory ship with deployable probes for planetary and ground scanning. The factory ship would set up a fuel depot for future missions to use. Quick question: will the mining equipment overheat faster on say, Moho, and slower on say, Dres due to the ambient temperature difference? -
You should boost a MK 3 passenger cabin up there as a habitation module, it holds 16 kerbals. Looking good.

As someone who has never played Kethane or Karbonite, and has yet to play 1.0, from what I've read 1.0 sounds best to me. One large planetary scan at low quality, then higher quality scans with narrow band or ground based sensors. Seems like the best one. -
I actually am rather hyped for this. I have avoided 1.0 so far due to school (it's crunch time!), I've pretty much resigned myself to waiting for 1.01 at this point.

So for resource mining, will small asteroids have finite ore in them? Anyone done this on the stream? I find the prospect of latching onto a small asteroid and using it as an infinite fuel core to be hilarious, although totally broken.

What are the reasons for KSP not using SI units?
Drillgorg replied to Instresu's topic in The Lounge
Haha thanks! I've been lurking for a while but felt compelled to post here since I do calculations kinda like these for my job. -
What are the reasons for KSP not using SI units?
Drillgorg replied to Instresu's topic in The Lounge
Wow, really? Using SI prefixes is standard practice and easy. I'm a mechanical engineer; in my field you'd be laughed at for avoiding prefixes (sadly I'm forced to use imperial most of the time due to living in the US. SI would make my job easier.) In practice, SI base units AND their prefixes are all considered SI. The whole point of them is to express very large (or very small) quantities concisely. In Kerbal we deal with very large quantities with frequency. I feel that adding an option for base units only is not a good use of Squad's time.
