I'll check on my install... José uses the APAS ports (Cx Aerospace), so he did indeed make all the CMs and LCs without ports so as to fit the APAS ones. Specular set to 200 for all parts. Metallic is 250/200/150/100/50 from left to right. Specualr set to 250 which gives maximum reflections in the VAB but means they are darker in space (nothing to reflect). Metallic is 250/200/150/100/50 again from L to R. Same stack as above but as seen in the VAB Conclusion: What looks awesome in the VAB will look bad in space as there is nothing to reflect like in the VAB, plus the VAB has omni directional lighting while space has a point source. You can't have your cake and eat it too. :-D Planet-shine could actually enhance this by offering light from a closer and larger source perhaps...

It's a compromise either way, but ever since x64 came out the few extra parts are no longer an issue IMO. Integrated rcs, chutes, solar panels is great and I'd love to see them stay that way. The RCS is not really in the way of anything and you can disable them. The solar panels can be removed through the GUI in most cases and chutes just not deployed. The only part that gets in the way of 3rd party parts or just personal preference (other size or no port at all) are the docking ports. NB: I am playing with the metallic and specular sliders and noticed if you enter the values manually you can go beyond 255 to get a really shiny effect with only the specular option while keeping the colors brighter outside the VAB. With a value of 300-500 it has a mirror like finish, not the same as the metallic option though. Above 500 nothing seems to change anymore (512 limit?). I can actually see the VAB reflected in the part at 400+ (metallic at 0, non-pbr). LOL, nevermind. Optical illusion.

What you can do right now is use an MFT-A, surface attach it in symmetry mode, rotate the part to that is forms a truss sticking out and set it as structural. That way you can fit any port you want and not have it look weird. Shown here on a BDB part, but you get the gist. The integrated ports have no value to me as I often also use 3rd party ports and need to make my own hub anyway. Maybe the LC pods should just have no ports and just use the adapter you propose on the small port. Best of both worlds; and yeah one more part, but the flexability outweighs that and don't know how much time you need to spend to integrate it somehow. Maybe just a temporary solution to remove it before the big overhaul and see what happens? And another shiny... This time a serious build (no kindergarten crayon colors) in the form of my end-game tourist lander.

@tater The best option for the new lander cans would be to remove the port or have the option to switch port size or even disable it. This would allow you to chose the size to match the CM you are using, or even use third party ports; I know José and some others are fans of the APAS ports and he has made portless versions in his expansion pack for every CM and LC.

@Sudragon Are you sure they don't dock? In the past I have used the LC2 for my Saturn V replica and it worked just fine. Maybe something was changed in the last few patches; I've not tried it for a while to be honest.

I will play with those combinations some more. Now all that remains is those engine parts on the PDC and my dream of an all-gold Saturn V has been realised This feeling is better than christmas morning... Thanks, Mage! You are awesomeness personified!!!!!! And just wow... Stainless steel with brass accents...

I'm having a blast with the new tanks and with the metallic options. Trying to figure out the best combination for specular vs metallic as they all tend to be quite dark vs the non-metallic "stock" finishes. Is there any way to improve this?

[WIP] Nert's Dev Thread - Current: various updates
Jimbodiah replied to Nertea's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
Awesome to see this is still moving forward. I couldn't play without NF Propulsion, and this is an awesome extention. -
I really wish I could, it would be so awesome to make your own parts. No idea where to start.

I still have to try this mod on a space station. -
@Shadowmage Will the RCS units get the recoloring option at some point? Blue bodies with silver reflective nozzles.... aaaaahhhhh.... my precious! Must have more bling! @tater Yeah, I think we need to lobby Mage to add some excellent stand-alone leg variations for the eventual rework of the lander core. The stock ones are so yugh, the foundries ones are a lot better already. Also, auto-leveling :))) Just sayin'... - SpaceX type legs - Original LC legs like in tater's photo - Something like the KerbodynePlus legs

2048 it is then !!! Noob question: Could this be applied to existing (non-sstu) parts without needing any texturing work etc? i.e. can a nub like me make stock parts shine?

*faints* My scifi stuff will look freaking amazing when this comes out :)))))))))))))))

This is not a realism mod, I don't think we should get so uptight as to have calibrated colors etc. Just thinkg recoloring tool for the heatshield
