The term you're looking for is the Roche limit, the closer you get, the greater the tidal forces, this is why you do not find bodies orbiting near to a black hole that are not being torn up into little bits.
-
Black holes are points in space, they have no X, Y or Z dimensions which is why they get called singularities, their gravity is the same as the body before they became a black hole but because they are a point in space it's possible to get very much closer to them. This is what makes them dangerous and why they bend light, the closer you get to the center the greater the effect of gravity, if you get close enough to a black hole not even light can escape, this is the "event horizon". The event horizon for light is visible as we can see where light can no longer escape, it's just black, nothing gets back out, okay there's hawking radiation but that's it. But yes, you can orbit a black hole, everything in our galaxy is orbiting the black hole at the center of the milky way, including our own sun.

Map view filter buttons not responding
sal_vager replied to Mystique's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Building upgrades has no effect on the filters, it sounds like something else is stealing focus from the KSP application. -
Rescue a stranded kerbin
sal_vager replied to Firefitter's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Here is a thread with help on rendezvous, basically get into an identical orbit that is either higher or lower, then burn pro/retrograde at the appropriate time. The rest is really down to feel, you know a higher orbit will take more time and hence be slower, so to catch up to a craft or Kerbal you need to go lower. -
Crew reports without crew...
sal_vager replied to Wallygator's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Alright I'll move it, and I thought this bug was dealt with, oh well :/ -
Naming Policy, The Art of Naming your Rockets.
sal_vager replied to TimePeriod's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I prefer more whimsical names, like those used for boats, here's a list of boats starting with the letter K for Kerbal -
Or aggressively close these things, and on that note...

You could take the monoprop out of the pod, works for me

[0.90] Can't find my save files
sal_vager replied to LordQuentium's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Cool okay, good luck, I'm pretty sure Windows can search for the folder for you if you enable searching of hidden folders. -
[0.90] Can't find my save files
sal_vager replied to LordQuentium's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
I think it's a hidden folder, either directly in Users or in Application Settings. My memory is hazy sorry, it's been a long time since I ran KSP on Windows. If you have a unique name for your save then the folder will also have that name, you could do a file search for it. -
[0.90] Can't find my save files
sal_vager replied to LordQuentium's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, modded installs)
Hi LordQuentiu, because you ran KSP in C:\Program Files I expect Windows either prevented the saves from being written (Data Execution Prevention) or automatically put them somewhere in your User folder. -
Sorry to say this Dr-Drunk but this is how the game works. Any vessels or parts of vessels that are not currently being piloted by the player, that are below about 22km on Kerbin and are more than 2.5km away from the active vessel (the physics range) are automatically removed from play and count as destroyed.

buged carrer mode
sal_vager replied to Lego8_bit's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Hello Lego8_bit, the 64bit Windows version of KSP is known to be broken in career mode, there is no fix for this. Please see the FAQ and all the other threads on this issue. I better close this, actually I should merge all these threads... -
The Linux Thread!
sal_vager replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
You have enough RAM and your i7 cpu should be plenty strong enough, I think it really is the graphics card holding you back at this point, for instance AMD dropped support for their HD4000 cards on Linux and yours is just one above that, so it's not as quick as the newer hardware. Plus, AMD drivers on Linux suck more than a warehouse full of vacuum cleaners. But it's worth making sure by trying the driver from the AMD site rather than the ones in the repos though, just in case it's working. -

An AMD 5800 is a little old now, that may be why it's slow for you, I know when I use the AMD R7 that's built into my APU it's significantly slower than with my Nvidia GTX650 which is hardly the best card out there. It's still weird that it is reporting only 256 megs of RAM though. -
Should Kerbals be able to grab each other?
sal_vager replied to arkie87's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
And watch kerbals get tangled up and strangle themselves? -
Anyone else seeing contracts disappearing?
sal_vager replied to Vicomt's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Those "reach X altitude" contracts will disappear if you pass that altitude with another flight before accepting them. -
Yes I understand that, but I don't know why you are unable to start KSP or why you are having this error, it's not a widespread known issue and when it does appear it is always due to a setting on the players PC or bad drivers, or even some other software you have installed that is doing something to the display that KSP can't handle. KSP needs to use the graphics card and in your case it isn't being allowed to do so, something you could try is a clean boot to eliminate other software from interfering, if KSP works with a clean boot then we know it will run on your hardware. Other things you can do to help us figure this out is to provide your dxdiag, and even a screenshot of your taskmanager showing your current processes.

Yeah there probably will, porkjet (the guy who made them) still has stuff he wants to add
-
Hmm, yeah, might be why it's not working as the Unity3D game engine used to make KSP doesn't like multi monitor setups and is a real pain to get working, if it works at all. There was an issue like this the other day where the player had something enabled in their graphics settings that was causing the problem, but his was Nvidia hardware rather than AMD, if you have any global settings applied in the catalyst control center it may work if they are disabled.

The Linux Thread!
sal_vager replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
Isn't Mint just a remake of Ubuntu but with the Mate or Cinnamon desktop? I think Mint is also available with xfce so it's probably in the repos for it. Mate is just as light on resources as xfce as well I think.
