  1. Great challenge. Can I assume Mun slingshots are disallowed?
  2. You are too kind, but nevertheless free to try if you so wish... The twin boar "upgrade" to ADTP+kodiak is now a big part of my strategy, and a huge advantage for approaching cost based challenges, which I only discovered when researching the low cost Laythe challenge elsewhere on the forums, but I cannot claim any ownership over it...
  3. Boom: https://imgur.com/a/yiY8ezx 36 seat <100k Landed both moons Your move, sir.
  4. I'd like to thank OP again for this challenge, which has provided many, many hours of design and testing entertainment. While it cannot quite beat the top entry for outright price, I'm nevertheless pleased to present the Cheapo Laythe Rocket (CLR) Mk 15 a.k.a. "The Pleasuredome" for your consideration: a non ISRU, non-recoverable, "relatively-forgiving-to-fly" homage to the art of extreme cost cutting and puerile double-entendres. Full mission report (mission run in version 1.7): https://imgur.com/a/G2sPZfQ Craft file: https://kerbalx.com/dnbattley/CLR-Mk15-The-PleasureDome
  5. Fair enough for that part: I use a not dissimilar mechanism, though utilising the unnaturally negative buoyancy of parachutes (specifically the Mk16) rather than ore.
  6. I would genuinely love to see a video of that performing the mission: presumably you need to refuel at Minmus? And how do you mine the science from the sea floor? I'm just finalising my submission and I thought I'd made great progress in cost efficiency, but cannot compete at a level of 30k!!!
  7. Hold the phone: I had an opportunity to look at this again this evening. Improvements were made: Sub 100k; 32 capacity; Both moons. https://imgur.com/a/93HZLLF
  8. Clever reverse psychology. I like it. Update: mission completed. No additional fuel needed. Landed on both Mun and Minmus and returned near to KSC safely. Single-take video (no quicksave/loads - one pause mid way through due to toddler intervention) in 16x speed will be uploaded shortly. I hope to get extra points for my rather exciting Mun landing Et voila:
  9. Per the KES readout, the craft should have a 3,500 dV capacity after reaching LKO, which should be comfortably enough to land on one and fly by the other, but landing on both would probably be pushing it. However, I'm happy to review and submit (and looking at your scoring methodology I think I was far too focussed on staying under 100k, since the penalties for going over that limit are tiny - especially when compared with the advantages of carrying a legion of tourists...). I'll review and properly submit this weekend if family commitments permit me the chance.
  10. I recommend relying on an honour system, rather than requiring mod removal, personally. Good challenge, by the way. The best challenges IMHO force contestants to enhance their knowledge of the game, and in this case I have learned about Laythe buoyancy in making this challenge work. Now I just need to optimise the re-ascent. As an aside I have descended goo to 2500m in stock, default, sandbox so can confirm it is possible in those conditions.
  11. Exactly so. I agree it would sorely test the boundaries of decency in a "non command seat" submission, but technically that is what it is. The airlock is also good for Kerbin re-entry modules with an absurd 2600K heat tolerance...
  12. Depending on how cheaty/exploity you guys think this is, I've just checked and this MH-powered monstrosity can take a Kerbal (not in a command seat) to Duna surface and orbit easily (over 200 m/s remaining on my test flight which went up to a 70k orbit). Control is limited, due to relying on a probe core (without comms), but not overly limiting.
  13. Kevin McLeod appears to be the de facto national anthem composer for KSP videos. More helpfully: https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/music.html and https://freepd.com/ But... if it's truly epic may I humbly suggest: http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Dexter_Britain/2018100594213006/01_The_Time_To_Run_Finale which I believe is able to be used if attributed for non-commercial videos
  14. The elegance and thought going into this challenge needs a counter-point: here is my rather more agricultural solution to the posed question - a Mk3 passenger pod strapped to two nukes. You don't need landing legs since the pod itself has a 50m/s impact tolerance, and it's just a matter of ensuring the engines survive each landing...
  15. Surpassed my previous with a slightly different design, this time managing to get an ion craft into orbit, and ultimately posting a new manned speed of 4,186 4,390 m/s, which, unless I make major changes is probably about as far as I can push this design, although I note that the flight path (particularly in the first few seconds) is such a critical determinant for final speed that 100 additional tries may yield a better result.
  16. This would be true for surface speed, but the orbital speed going counter-clockwise and clockwise is identical: it just needs more delta-v to get there against the rotation.
  17. Getting my marker in to this challenge quickly, since I am absolutely sure it will be comprehensively beaten: manned @ 3,678 3,860 3,880 m/s, after EVA.
  18. Well darn. I finally sat down today to have a go at this, only to find I'm 24 hours too late. Oh well, here is the mission report for posterity, plus as far as I can tell this is the current best "manned" report...
  19. As promised, the deadline has now passed, and with four excellent entries I'm pleased to declare @vyznev the winner, and thus the "the Slimline King" for this very impressive (and extremely well documented!) mission to Tylo. The combination of Ion and Sparks, together with an impressively ridiculous Tylo lander, plus (albeit with some F9-related-help...) the highly technically challenging achievement of manually landing without even KES informational guidance, made it a worthy winner. I hope everyone enjoyed the mission, and learned something helpful from the technical challenge of it. Kudos to @Mythical Donuts for two excellent submissions, as well as @KingDominoIII fantastic effort. Unfortunately due to illness (via the human petri dishes that are my children) I never actually posted my own submission, which I was developing into a video, but a sketchbook highlight is here.
  20. @sevenperforce I don't want to be to much more prescriptive than I already have been, and would accept a single launch with multiple containers if you wish. Remember the objective is "impressive", and aesthetics are part of it. Multiple launches may add technical difficulty, however. I've been developing this as my entry for two weeks already. It's not overly difficult, but it is fiddly to do well...
  21. Would you mind going to a stock planet? It will make judging the challenge easier...
