Ships exploding when changing SOI
NewtSoup replied to Black-Two-'s topic in KSP1 Technical Support (PC, unmodded installs)
I've had some thing similar and it turned out to be overuse of AutoStrut set to heaviest part. If you have a LOT of auto struts to Heaviest Part this can cause issues in situations like fuel tanks emptying below the point were they were the heaviest part. Is it possible a similar thing happens on SOI changes? If you are using a lot of autostruts try reducing them to just a few parts and connect them to root rather than heaviest. -

My Science Tree looks like this now! I need 7150 science to complete it. Where should I go next folks? -

I did grab the science Circularised, sort of at Kerbin, every last drop of fuel used to get me a 40km periapsis Final Descent into the atmosphere Chutes deployed and splashdown I think I can call this mission an unqualified success! Mission Scientist Lawig and Pilot Franmon have certainly earned their stars! -

Incomming Screenshots! So yeah, barely any fuel, about 45 degrees off the equator: Burned up all the fuel and the monopropellant - just going to bail now and use the jetpack Yeah we can do this! Seperation of 3.5km And here we have it! On approach! Going to make it! ( I did remember to grab the data from the Science Vessel ) I can taste that stale cockpit air already (Realative) Safety! Return trajectory plotted captain! We'll probably even have enough fuel to circularise before dropping into Kerbin's Atmosphere. -

I got the last two... But I messed up. 58 m/s of fuel left and the best I can do is an inclined orbit :(. Going to have to make use of a) the monopropellant in the science vessel b) the jetpack Saving First!.. I know the jetpack can get me into orbit off minmus and the command ship has a bit of fuel to spare -

Mission Scientist Lawig has visited pretty much every biome on Minmus now and is sitting pretty ( oh so pretty... vacant ) at the North pole ( which seems to be on the "bottom" as far as the game is concerned. no matter ). The game classifies this as "Landed at Minmus' Poles" - Am I to take it that the game does not distinguish between a north and a south pole and that travelling to the other pole would now be pointless? Answered my own question: Poles Lowlands Midlands Highlands Slopes Flats Lesser Flats Great Flats Greater Flats I'm missing Lesser Flats and Highlands. Would be nice to get the full set!. Got 1300dV left.. I'm sure I could get at least one of them. -

Thanks and yeah it didn’t start that way. Just grew -

I’ve always put up scanners just in case but 3 games in a row I’ve had the greater flats on Minmus a superb source of ore I guess it must be coincidence. -

NewtSoup replied to NewtSoup's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
They always have the greatest ore concentration. Also they're really really flat. Easy landing, takeoff and base module alignment. It's as if they were designed for it. -

Science Vessel on it's way to Minmus. The science vessel itself has a ton of dV for hopping about on the surface of Minmus. It's got every science tool available for planetary work. It can ditch the radial tanks to reduce weight and stretch the fuel further. If need be Mission Scientist Lawig can get into minmus orbit on just the jet pack and take the data with her. The Command Vessel currently has 444m/s left in orbit of minmus WITH the Science Vessel attached so getting home will be no issue at all. Could probably even circularise with a bit of aero braking before dropping on to Kerbin. -

Yeah I use the antenna calculator spreadsheet. The reason my sat has a load of 16's combined is purely for looks, not for range. They just talk to the sats around mun and minmus. The reason the sats around mun and minmus have combined HG5s is that that was as far as I'd unlocked in the tech tree at that time and for looks. They suffice, maybe I will replace them but they work well enough so I probably won't -

With the current version of the game it's happy bouncing a signal through my relay using a communotron 16 ( well 8 of them actually I kerbal on the satellite ) - though I did test it with a single communotron using a setorbit cheat to see what happens before I made this lovely satellite. Please enjoy a screenshot of it performing a burn out of Kerbin to the Mün That's six baguettes on a HECS probe core then a battery and a reaction wheel then a tower of cubes, a converter plate on the end of the tower of cubes sporting a spark engine 8 communotrons 8 more cubes and a solar panel array on each cube. Then struts, from the cubes to the battery. ~2400 m/s dV Bonzer! Made it to a polar orbit of the mun with about 900m/s spare. It may be over engineered a bit. -

For the moment I'm going to set up survey scanners around the Mün and Minmus. Not that I don't know where to park a mining base on Minmus - in the middle of the greater flats! Oh there was a question I was going to ask - I have a relay sat net around the Mün but the last ship I sent there ( for science ) wouldn't access the satnet on internal antenna. It kept saying connection was direct to Kerbin and was choked off due to distance. I would have though the internals should have been able to contact 3 satellites orbiting at 360km. Each relay has a quartet of HG-5's which should combine to be plenty of power right? Or do I simply need a single external antenna? -
Sorry I've not been around guys. I know some of you were reading my threads and then I kind of vanished. Someone was kind of rude about them ( not on the forums and it doesn't matter who ) and so it kind of took away my desire to play. I've come back again but got quickly fed up with the fund system in career mode. Yet I didn't want to start over in science ( I still wanted to unlock the tree ) as I'd put in a lot of work setting up the relay sat nets around Kerbin and The Mün. So I created a science game, made a back up of my main save and set about comparing the two. After 20 minutes of editing I now have turned my career mode save game into a Science Mode save game! All buildings upgraded, removed the need for funds, left the reputation in there as it does nothing in science mode anyway. Removed the contracts scenario in the save game. Funds were never an issue anyway the game practically throws them at you. But no more fetching kerbals from odd orbits, no more stations that I don't really want to put up with 10,000 units of electric charge and a billion gallons of fuel. I will of course build refuelling stations but they will be mine. Anyway. I'm just going to play the game now. I most likely won't be documenting Empress Valentina's conquest of the system in the way I was.

That's probably their plan. 13 year olds can be barely understood by anyone even their own parents so it makes it easier to "pass". I used to know a guy who reckoned he could write a program in PHP that would pass the turing test in 2 days. I laughed.

You say that.. but: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-27762088 I don't know if he's still up and running though.

kik.. I mean lol. This is the pinnacle of Bot Programming. Its from the Star Wars Galaxies Days. Written by Fargo Crestinglight. The Autocamp 2000 talks to other players with following rules: 1.) If someone says something ending in a question mark, respond by saying "Dude?" 2.) If someone says something ending in an exclamation point, respond by saying "Dude!" 3.) If someone says something ending with a period, respond by randomly saying one of three things: "Okie," "Sure," or "Right on." 4.) EXCEPTION: If someone says something directly to you by mentioning your name, respond by saying "Lag." 5.) (And remember to accept all trade requests from other players by giving them a melon.) I sat it in front of the keyboard, made sure my character had at least fifty melons in his backpack, and then trudged off to leave it alone for the night. My character, Farglik the Mon Calamari, waited around in the Cantina for some adventurers. The following is a log of what transpired: KillSwitch: [Shouting] Does anyone want to join our hunting party? Farglik: [Powered by the Autocamp 2000] Dude? [KillSwitch invites Farglik to join the group.] [Farglik joins the group] KillSwitch: We're gonna go hunt wrixes. Farglik: Right on. [The group of players runs out of the Cantina, Farglik following close behind. Farglik shoots at every little monster they pass.] KillSwitch: Why are you attacking the durneys? Farglik: Dude? KillSwitch: The durneys, the little bunny things -- why do you keep shooting at them? Farglik: Dude? Troobacca: [A wookie in the party] My weapon powerup expired, I need a new one. Farglik: Sure. [Troobacca opens a trade with Farglik.] [Farglik hands him a melon.] Troobacca: ...what's this? Farglik: Dude? Troobacca: You handed me a melon! Farglik: Dude! KillSwitch: Knock it off guys, I see some wrixes up ahead. Let's do this. Farglik: Right on. [The group encounters a bunch of dangerous wrixes, but they gang up and shoot every one of them.] KillSwitch: We rock! Farglik: Dude! Troobacca: We so OWNED them! Farglik: Dude! KillSwitch: Uh oh, hang on. Up ahead are some Sharnaff bulls. We can't handle them, so don't shoot. Farglik: Okie. [Farglik shoots one of the Sharnaff bulls.] [The bull attacks; Trobacca and several other party members are killed before they beat it.] KillSwitch: You IDIOT! Farglik why did you shoot at them? Farglik: Lag. KillSwitch: Well don't do it again. Farglik: Sure. [Farglik shoots at another Sharnaff bull.] [The entire party is slaughtered except for Farglik.] [ ... Farglik stands there, alone, for several hours ... ] [ ... finally, a merchant runs up to him.] Stingrie: [A Rodian merchant.] Hey man! Would you like to buy a stimpack? Farglik: Dude? Stingrie: A stimpack. It boosts your health by 200 points. I'll sell it to you for 500 credits. Farglik: Okie. [Stingrie opens a trade session.] [Farglik hands him a melon.] Stingrie: What the hell is this? Farglik: Dude? Stingrie: You handed me a melon. Farglik: Right on. Stingrie: I told you 500 credits! Farglik: Dude! Stingrie: If it's too expensive, just say so. Farglik: Sure. [Stingrie runs away, angry.] [ ... several more hours pass ...] [A small hunting party led by Krushmor the Master Rifleman comes over the ridge and spots Farglik.] Krushmor: Farglik, what's up? What are you doing way out here? Farglik: Lag. Krushmor: We're rooting dralls out of a cave. You should join our group. Farglik: Okie. [Krushmor invites Farglik to join the group.] [Farglik joins the group and starts following Krushmor around.] Soop: [The party's medic]. Here, Farglik, let me hand you some stimpacks. Farglik: Lag. Soop: I know, it's pretty bad tonight. Here you go. Farglik: Right on. [Soop opens up a trade window and hands Farglik a Stimpack.] [Farglik hands Soop a melon.] Soop: Uh ... thanks! Farglik: Dude! [The party enters a cave and spends the next two hours brutally clearing it of creatures, room by room. Everyone gets tons of XP.] Krushmor: Aw man, it's getting really late guys. I should go! Farglik: Dude! Krushmor: I know, sucks. I'll catch you all later. Farglik: Sure. [Krushmor logs off. By default, Farglik is now promoted to group leader!] Soop: Well that sucks. What should we hunt next? Farglik: Dude? Soop: Let's hunt Slice Hounds! Farglik: Dude! Soop: I know an awesome spot. Follow me. Farglik: Right on. [The group runs out of the cave, but Farglik, because he is now group leader, just stands there. Several minutes pass before Soop returns.] Soop: Farglik why didn't you come with us? Farglik: Lag. Soop: Well catch up when you can. Farglik: Okie. [Farglik stands motionless in the cave and eventually the group disbands. Half an hour passes.] [Suddenly, one of the game developers, controlling Darth Vader, enters the cave.] Darth Vader: Well, my young padawan, we've been watching your progress for quite some time. Farglik: Sure. Darth Vader: You have done well. We have decided to bestow upon you: Force powers! Farglik: Okie. Darth Vader: You will be the most powerful Jedi on the planet! Farglik: Dude! [Darth Vader gives Farglik force powers.] Darth Vader: Would you like my light saber? Farglik: Dude? Darth Vader: My light saber. I bestow it onto you. Farglik: Right on! [Darth Vader opens up a trade and gives Farglik a light saber.] [Farglik hands Darth Vader a melon.] Darth Vader: Thanks, uh, for the ... melon. Farglik: Sure. Darth Vader: Well? Aren't you going to try out your new Force powers? Farglik: Dude? Darth Vader: Your Force powers! The powers I just gave you! Farglik: Dude! Darth Vader: The FORCE, Farglik! Use the Force! Farglik: Lag. Darth Vader: Okay, you know what. Just forget the Force powers. I'm taking them back. Farglik: Okie. Darth Vader: And give me back my light saber! Farglik: Sure. [Farglik hands Darth Vader a melon.] [Darth Vader kills Farglik.] [Farglik respawns in the cloning facility.] KillSwitch: [In the cloning facility] Whoa! Look who just popped in. What happened to you, Farglik? Farglik: Lag. KillSwitch: Want to come hunting with us? Farglik: Okie. [Farglik and the Autocamp 2000 join the hunt and gain experience for several more hours...] I'd call the experiment an unqualified success. - Fargo

Actually I'm happy again - I have found the gnome-tweak-tool and enabled desktop icons. Now I can do what I want. I also have installed the menu editor so I can add custom links to the main panel. I like the way the workspace switcher works. I know how to turn it off if I get bored and want Compiz back I like Gnome 3. You need to turn back on a few things that are turned off by default but it's a very nice environment. Going to have a good look through the shell extensions next.

At this rate I'm going to end up with pure command line and just enough framework to run games full screen only.

I too went the route of Gentoo back in my university days around 1999 / 2000 took around a day to compile and install with an early version of Enlightenment.

@steve_vI will try KDE - I do like KDE but the last time I tried Kubuntu it installed just fine and then fell flat on it's face. I got it up and running again but it refused to populate the software centre and a few other things so I stuck standard 16.04 back on a pen drive and went back to that. Mind you this time I'd not be installing Kubuntu per-se just KDE Ooh.. maybe someone here can answer - I'm wanting to install Unity Personal, will the upgrade from 16.04 to 18.04 cause issues with Unity Licensing? I haven't got a clue how Unity checks how many operating systems its installed on.
