No. The point is to do something that has never been done before, and that is a no refueling no detachable lander Tylo SSTO. It might be possible with ion drives.
-
If that's the case, then you can argue that humans should never leave LEO. They have to accept some risks.

I thought of that the moment I saw the ITS moon base image

If a person had been inside because he was sent up by SpaceX, he would have adequate life support systems. If he was a stowaway, he would have to have snuck onboard the rocket and if he was an idiot and did not bring lithium hydroxide with him, he would have died. If I were to stowaway on Dragon I would bring along some Co2 scrubbers. Guys, I meant if the payload was a dragon 2 vessel! (Because of abort ability.)

They could open the door...

After over a decade of operation, that has never happened though. The ITs also has higher mass budget for redundancy.

Not only that, but Spacex says that if it was carrying a dragon capsule, the occupants would have survived.
-
These are all perfectly valid concerns about life support in space, but the ISS has already proved that CCLS for 6 months in space is possible.

So is the SLS... and the ITS, though launching Mars Direct via the ITs would be...unnecessary. Not really. SpaceX manufactures its own parts, rather than shipping from a hundred contractors around the country. Remember the JWST cost 18 times more than predicted. Also, this thread isn't the mars colonization thread. On that note, I think there could be swarms of cube sats sent to the outer planets.

Yes. It uses the sabatier reaction to process co2 into fuel.

2 weeks isn't very long to explore, let alone build a colony.

The problem with Lockheed plan is that it will enable only 2 week stays for only 4 astronauts. For a lander to be sustainable, it should be able to carry at least a couple dozen people to the surface and stay for a few years. It also requires a dozen launches just for a 2 week surface stay!

It would take quite a while to get to Trappist One. http://www.lunarsail.com/LightSail/rit-1.pdf

Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical questions
DAL59 replied to DAL59's topic in Science & Spaceflight
If all land on Earth was replaced with water, what would happen? (and all water was replaced with land) -
Not correct actually. It takes equal delta vee, because Mars has an atmosphere. Also easier ISRU. Especially with Bigelow, that could be easily doable. Zubrin's plan calls for only three launches: A hab, and ERV, and a manned lander.

400 dollars a year! That's ridiculous! That explains why so many images on the internet are missing...
