Remote Control?

Pretty simple craft, just a one man pod, battery, solar collector, OKTO2 and the drill, convert-o-torn and holding tank. i just want fly to another nearby spot on the surface and can't get more than about 400m above the surface and it tells me the SAS off line and there is no pilot on board to fly it. What I don't understand is how I got all the way out here like it is and now it decides to not let me use SAS? -
I'm stuck, again... I have my first very simple drilling rig on Minmus. I used Bill an engineer thinking there was some advantage with that, so, I don't have a pilot. I made it here okay and landed and even produced some fuel! But, now I am trying to relocate and I quickly get an error message as the SAS turns off. It says something about no pilot on board and the SAS shuts down. What now? Is this a solar flare or something causing loss of comm with the tracking station? I have line of site with Kerbin, does the tracking station need to be facing .Minmus? I would have thought I'd see these sort of problems much sooner if it were any of my ideas going on here? im reall stuck if I can't get SAS working again? Hey, maybe my engineer can repair it?

Am I missing something on the parts windows? I have trouble identifying the diameter of tanks and engines and stuff as I build my rockets. Is there some info in the part detail window or name of the part that helps identify its diameter?

Guy, I need to recover a PPD-10 from LKO. Is the grabber the only way to do this? I must assume that successful completion of this contract means I can't have the storage container exploding during rentry? That is the part that worries me. I can probably get to a rendezvous and grab it, but I can see this all going bad when it all starts heating up on rentry.

Re entry target KSC?

Ya, I'm on PS4 so no mods for me. lets say I'm in a reasonable circular orbit about 95k or so with an average velocity that I would have from a local orbit, I don't remember what that is, 2300 or something like that? If I have enough fuel to do a de orbit burn but not a lot extra, is there a best location to start the burn reference to my desired touch down? once in a while I get close... -
Guys, I'm looking for some basic seat of the pants tips to narrow down my landing zone. im really most interested in landings back on kerbin near KSC to maximize my refund on parts. Is there an eyeball method or does this require sophisticated maneuver node stuff? i have tried to estimate the atmosphere and deceleration to come close, but I usually don't even land on the correct continent.

I had two simple landers on Minmus and a scanner satellite on the way to start exploring. The switch from tracking station to ships was acting slow so i saved, I quit out, powered off and restarted. The entire universe was gone when I started the game. Disappointing, I hope this is another fix in the upcoming release for consoles.

I had read that article and am anxiously waiting for the new release! I did not remember reading that they had resolved the stuck on the ladder bug, that is great news!

I am just now seeing this bug, arggg... just did a repositioning move on Minmus for more science data and landed. When I did the eva I'm stuck to the side of the command pod. Can't move, no RCS, NOTHING. Would be great if we actually do have an update/DLC coming for console that maybe this would be addressed? has anyone tried bumping a kerbal with another kerbal when stuck like this or is the bugged kerbal actually glued in place?

Science Basics

Continuing my education here... i am starting to establish a base on Minmus. Should I be transmitting science or anything else from here back to KSC? what do I need in terms of a transmitter on Minmus? My tracking station is fully upgraded now. I have a bit of goo science from my location but the transmit value is 0.0 while the recovery value is11.5? the signal meter is 0 so I'm guessing that is my issue? I do have two of the little whip antenna on the base. there is no way to augment my base once it is here on Minmus is there, other than attaching additional components thru a docking port on both units? (Unfortunately I didn't put any on my initial base, but that's ok, I'll just call it my hover craft. It still has a fair bit of fuel so I can probably get around the surface a lot before it runs dry.) -
VAB combining saved craft?

Just trying to figure this out now... can you offer a bit a bit more background of how you use this method? I can see the saved craft and merge getting to be a long list. This lets you organize and sort types of assemblies right? wow this game has LOTS of little details! -
I am amazed at all the intricacies and variety this game offers and I read threads like this and as a new player I sit here and say, "Oh, I want to build one of those, and that one, and that is cool, and how did they do that, I want to try that!" Slow down guys, give me a chance to catch up!

I must have been having a kerbal moment or something? I still don't understand what or how I got confused. Anyway, I had enough science points to upgrade the tree so I can now use the OKTO2. The only things I know for sure is that I was using a scientist and not a pilot. This was so I could do more science on my two Minmus. I must have played the docking tutorial so many time that I was beginning to think I had always had the top tier SAS options? Stupid brain! Thanks for all the tips on this one. Don't feel like you are helping an old man across the street, unless that makes you feel good, in that case you probably are. Now, is there anything I can do to speed up the XP of my kerbonauts? -

I'm still perplexed by this, thanks for the help, I still don't know for sure what is going on. I know I created a Minmus lander ship with the OKTO and I used a scientist to fly it. Now when I load that craft I get only the sas indicator. No prograde or retro or any of the other sas mode indicators like maneuver. i have been doing the docking tutorial so I know I am seeing everything there, but I thought I had more than only the basic sas indicator. How many stars does a kerbal need in order to show the various tiers of sas modes? is using a scientist with level two stars and the OKTO the same as a pilot with two stars so I should be seeing SAS and stability, pro and retro, and for level 2 target and maneuver? I found this info in the game under the KSPedia. -

The only one I have ever used is the OKTO. what about antenna and or battery power or other? Jeb has one star and I think I had been using Bob for the science and he has two stars. im perplexed, but that seems normal for me... -

What is it that unlocks the various autopilot pointer modes that appear on the left side of the nav ball? Are they called autopilot pointers or what? I thought I had used them on a few flights but now all I have is prograde and retrograde. when I set a maneuver node the blue heading bug shows up on the nav ball but not an autopilot choice to the left of the nav ball. does the tracking station have to be fully upgraded? Does the space craft need certain equipment on board? i don't seem to understand how the search function works here on the forum, I would have expected to find this question already asked and answered. If that is so, I would be grateful if someone had a tip for me on that as well. thanks for the help!

Career Economics?

I don't consider any of it to be a grind yet, probably not my best choice of words. I do like the idea of getting better at docking and running re supply missions sounds like fun for now. im just worried about spending too much money on it and then going out of business? Would hate to have some yuppity startup, crowd funded bunch of hippies move in on my action, so you get me those heaters and we'll talk, see? -
I am thinking about trying to put a refueling station into orbit around kerbin. My question - I am guessing this will cost me a bit of money without any immediate payback. Does the economy eventually start to pay better? Will it become easier to be self sufficient or do I need to stick with the grind for now? I'm assuming that the away planet and moon missions are where the money is? i have about 500k in the budget for now, a few more parts of KSC need upgrades but none that are holding me back at this point.

Just uncovered an extremely useful and easy to create simulator environment that I have started using for RCS AND EVA training and practice. I'm on the console edition PS4. Using the the konami code from the pause menu I set the gravity as low as possible (you could adjust this to match whatever planet you want to simulate). Then, I constructed a very simple command module with 4 thruster blocks, a propellant tank. now I can fly around KSC to practice using RCS. A BIG thing for me that I did to help me orient to the craft is I added a ladder to the side so I can easily identify the "front" of the craft. I consider this a training simulator.

Here is a successful version! I still don't have this figured out, I'm having trouble with the translation controls on the PS4 controller.

Well, the video is pretty short and the title tells the final outcome. This was my 5th or 6th attempt at the docking tutorial in the console edition. I have been successful only twice and I think I got lucky both times. And the number of hours spent fiddling with it, priceless!

Docking Take Two - I expected to fail at several subsequent attempts of the docking tutorial but actually managed to complete it again and even learned a few things in the process! I failed to get screen shots that I thought I had, but below are two from the exercise. The one I didn't get showed me almost docked but the magnetic coupling wouldn't attach. I tried backing away slightly but was afraid of rubber banding off to the Mun! The solution was turning off SAS. As soon as I turned off sas it clamped together perfectly! I'm still getting the hang of the translation controls, seems like you need to be in the ROT mode to use them? I'm playing on PS4 so I'm going to ROT, then R1 and L joystick. That is going to make this much easier as I get some more practice! My biggest issue is still the "homing to the station" course/path I seem to take while getting down to the last few meters. I end up flying circles around the stranded ship while trying to get close. Somehow I think I need to start further away and get lined up for a more straight in approach? Gona do this again for sure, very satisfying when the ole clamp-matic bangs together! (Stand by for photos, I need to figure out how to upload them here...) edit: I only found one topic on uploading photos and I didn't see where it addressed my question? Is there a way to upload a photo here on the site and then link it into my post, or exactly how do I do this?

Do you need to orbit and use the scanner dodad to map the surface? I only messed with that device in a tutorial or maybe one of my test missions? It scans the surface as you orbit. can I also ask for my own benefit, how do I figure out what docking port to use on a craft I intend to build to perform a rescue from orbit? good luck on the Mun, I have not made it to the surface yet.

Well, I think it is turning out to be bittersweet. I'm back to my career now and realize that a mistake I made a day or so might end my career. I accidentally upgraded a building at KSC and I have only 3347 kerbal bucks. I can buy enough cardboard tube to make a toy rocket now! Arghh... can I sell anything? Should I take a buyout or something in the admin building? I have unlocked a pretty good part of the science tree and have 828 science points on hand. Not sure what to do? Don't really want to start over, and don't want to really cheat in cash. Hum.... what to do? I'd be happy to listen to suggestions.
