Helicopter race to the island runway
ralanboyle replied to Pds314's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
Alright, I've never attempted a legit helo in KSP so this was a first for me. I pulled out all the stops a made a big, heavy, traditional chopper. I realized that the MK3 cockpit has a huge reaction wheel in it so I showed it before during and after the flight to show that is was off. I'll try again with one that's more optimized for speed. -

Okay, I figured I'd put one up for a pace time. I'm not sure where you want to count the landing but whatever, its less than 3 minutes. -
Dessert Airfield Race on Fumes
ralanboyle replied to Pds314's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I don't know. First I had this same ship as a tricycle and tried maybe 50 times. All wheel settings and VERY gentle landings. No bueno. Then I tried it as a tail dragger. Same deal. Hence, quadracycle. After 3000+ hours of KSP, I've never had this much trouble landing a small plane. -
Dessert Airfield Race on Fumes
ralanboyle replied to Pds314's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
@Pds314 I got to the airfield on 25u without too much trouble, but making a plane that could also land took 2 days. Even then it took a dozen tries to get her on the ground. For your entertainment, I didn't cut out the crashes. 22 minutes. -

Okay yeah. Reserve Fuel run took a little longer cause I couldn't leave it balls to the wall. 10:22. Apparently Youtube doesn't want to imbed this one- https://youtu.be/ZcRbSjJ4UoE -

Alright, Here is a Full throttle run in 9:54. I think I can use the same plane for the reserve category 4. -

Dessert Airfield Race on Fumes
ralanboyle replied to Pds314's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
I accidently just made a challenge similar to this. I think it is different enough to be its own thing, but I probably wouldn't have made it if I'd noticed yours first. I'll give this a shot later. -
The challenge is simple: Take off from KSP and land at the Desert Airfield. Rules: Your aircraft must have a pilot onboard, seated inside a MK1, MK2, or MK3 Cockpit (inline or standard variant.) Your craft will be powered only by stock (inc DLC) air breathing, jet engines. RAPIER in air breathing mode is fine. Your craft will not discard any parts. (A part or two broken due on a bad landing is acceptable.) Aesthetic part offset is acceptable within reason. Parts must touch. No part will be clipped more than 50% inside another, except landing gear (because landing gear are normally fully occluded IRL.) No Fairings. No Heat Shields. Time is recorded by the game clock. It starts when you move and it stops when you stop (<2m/s) The pace time is 30 minutes. Only runs which qualify faster than the pace will be entered on the leaderboards. Good luck! Leaderboards are divided into weight classes. Bantamweight = <3,000kg Featherweight = 3,000-7,999kg Welterweight = 8,000-14,999kg Middleweight = 15,000-39,999kg Heavyweight = 40,000-99,999kg Super Heavyweight = >100,000kg

@Pds314 That is an interesting solution that does not appear to violate the spirit of the challenge. Good work. Good work. I left the option for VTOL open on purpose. -

Congrats, @18Watt and @Pds314 , you've been added to the boards. @Pds314, I have not added your featherweight entry because it appears to violate this rule, "Propellers will be attached to attachment nodes only, without any offset." I read your explanation but it still appears to break the rule. The part clipping is also very aggressive. If you can show that the props are attached to the attachment nodes and not offset, then I'll count it. I don't see how that will be possible since your motor is far from the props. -
The challenge is simple: Take off from KSP and land at the Desert Airfield. Rules: Your aircraft must have a pilot onboard, seated inside a MK1, MK2, or MK3 Cockpit (inline or standard variant.) Your craft will be powered only by R121 or R7000 Turboshaft engines, or both. Propellers will be attached to attachment nodes only, without any offset. (Yes, that means 8 props max per engine.) Your craft will not discard any parts. (A part or two broken due to a bad landing is acceptable.) Aesthetic part offset is acceptable within reason. Parts must touch. No part will be fully occluded, except landing gear (because landing gear is normally fully occluded IRL.) No Fairings. Time is recorded by the game clock. The Efficient Airplane Challenge

@Pds314, Let's say the craft needs to me airborne. This could be defined as not touching the water. -

Alright @OHara, I'm not great at the fine points of props in KSP so I read your explanation and ran with it. I scaled it up and came up with this... 2 units of fuel divided by 11,498 is 0.000174 and yeah... I made new leaderboards... -

I am aware of the rules I made. You found a loophole an exploited it. I know some challenge moderators want players to find loopholes. I am not looking for loopholes, I’m looking for efficiency. I am not upset with you or anyone, I’m just refining the language to keep everyone within the spirit of the challenge. -

Proving that bigger is better I put 30 units of fuel in a 59,094kg airplane and hucked it over to the island. #2 score is 0.00050. -

Congratulations everyone for your entries today! Due to the close race, please include 5 decimal places in #2 scores. Congratulations to @OHara for holding the current top score in both leaderboards. Let's try to match min with a jet, if more people start entering prop planes and widening the gap, I'll create another leaderboard for them. I am surprised by this efficiency. Good work. @swjr-swis, great run and great plane. Unfortunately, it does not qualify for #2 because of dropping its landing gear. @camacju, I like the "outside the box" thinking but your kerbal does not remain inside a Command Pod and therefore violates rule 5 and the spirit of the challenge.
