  1. Hey, couldn't we repurpose the PB-X50R radial xenon container for that? I NEVER use those
  2. This requires some fast clicking, but one way is to put escape pods somewhere else on the ship like in the docking bay. Crew transfer to the pods and eject those--perhaps a cluster of Mk1 lander cans with a set of parachutes, or a single Mk1-2 if you don't use all four seats in the cockpit. Leads to "we can't get everyone out in time!" dramas, if you're into that sort of thing.
  3. Yes! You could fit loads of xenon in that stupid thing!
  4. 1. Put some ports in a box. 2. Put your ship in that box. 3. Make Jeb open the box...and that's the way you dooo-oo it!
  5. Ah, so you mean as a modeling part? It is, after all, the ONLY part in KSP with multi-layer insulation, so that must come in very handy...
  6. I haven't seen this much passion around here since that time they were going to limit all Forum posts to 140 characters.
  7. Anyone who's seen my Duna mission or my Eve Rocks submission knows I like my ships to keep a nice clean line. So how do I do a Jool-5 ship with multiple landers that doesn't look like a fire extinguisher making love to a hat rack? This stowable SSTO for Laythe may be part of the solution. I ran a quick test to see if I could make a working SSTO plane that can pack down to fit in a Mk3 cargo bay. So far, everything looks great! Here's the Korigame assembled, in atmosphere: It's marignally stable, and I mean that in a good way, as in I can aim it anywhere and it tends to go that direction. When it does flip and spin, reaction wheels are enough to recover. SSTO on Kerbin with fuel to spare. It comes in two pieces that fit together in a 5-segment Mk3 bay. Here's the assembly method: I was probably a couple of degrees off matching front to back but I don't think that will matter. I may also experiment with a triple mount of small ports to ensure perfect alignment every time. I am also quite happy with the arrangement of RCS thrusters. Note the groups on the wingtips; one four-way thruster and two place-anywhere pods on each side gives full symmetric 3-axis control for the back end. Similar arrangement on the pilot section. My previous designs had four-way thrusters all around, and typically the top/bottom mounts were not symmetric due to obstructions like the vertical stabilizer. Now all I have to do is invent a stowable Tylo lander
  8. Nor a tank that you can stick a lander leg through! Well done, you are clearly #1 on the Fuel Tank As Minmus Porthole leaderboard and I make you a Knight of the Order of the Golden Toroid for demonstrating yet another unique property of this amazing tank.
  9. Well done. I make you a Knight of the Order of the Golden Toroid! ETA: Whoops, but I have to move you to 'gatecrasher' since of course all your tanks are not ROUND-8, sorry. - - - Updated - - - Well, I tried to make a Mun ship that ended up about 300 parts, it took 40 minutes to load from VAB and then it exploded the pad. If anyone can make something like that fly, it's you!
  10. Yes, just like you should get an Eve Rocks badge for saying, "11,000 dV! Launch from a mountain!"
  11. Excellent point, Slashy. How about I award "Order of the Toroid" honors to challenges that do exactly that? I'll even make a medal. Bonus 'points' (note quotes) for the ROUND-8 doing a job that the Oscar-B cannot do.
  12. Here's my entry, in which I claim a K-PRIZE with TOROIDAL DISTINCTION! The Round-SSTO lifting off. It's got, I dunno, wanna say about 12 tanks for the jet and 5 each for the rockets? Only the ROUND-8's unique insulation can survive these high temperatures. Really! Cruising at Mach Stupid... You know, I maybe they SHOULD get rid of the ROUND-8. It's FAR TOO POWERFUL! In orbit... Coming in for a landing... And safe on the runway.
  13. Some of us are saying goodbye with a challenge: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/115659-The-I
  14. Only 111, because I went 60% to Funds and 40% to Reputation when I finished tech. Never bothered taking Administration to Level 3, as Mortimer pointed out how much damn science would be required to justify the millions of funds in capital investment.
  15. Yes, of course. I think there's a thread for discussing the decision and its workarounds, this one is not that thread. This one is about using ROUND-8s to fling things into space - - - Updated - - - Yes, multiplied by the number of ROUND-8s pictured in your avatar (nice, BTW!) and divided by 174.368%.
  16. Good plan, even if we don't rank like that the # of ROUND-8 used is a very vital statistic. I am currently trying to use so many I cannot get to the launch pad.
  17. I'm teary now. At first I thought, "Why is his ROUND-8 ribbed?" and then I thought, "Why is his so much bigger than mine?" I didn't like where that was going so I looked again and WOW! Now I see it! +1!
  18. ROUND-8: A GREAT LITTLE TANK No part in KSP is perfect, and some are downright useless. But none is as unique as the ROUND-8 fuel tank. This challenge is given to raise awareness of this awesome little part and give us what may be... *SNIFF* one last chance to build stock ships with it. FUN FACTS ABOUT THE ROUND-8: (all stolen from the wiki, or just made up) It is the only toroidal fuel tank currently available! The ROUND-8 is one of the few parts in Kerbal Space Program that is covered in multi-layer insulation! Though it's called the ROUND-8, it has six segments! It's less orange than the Rockomax-64 fuel tank, and also somewhat smaller! It carries 174.368% of the fuel capacity of the Oscar-B Fuel Tank, despite having a smaller apparent size! Despite the above, there are some who believe it to be redundant with the Oscar-B! Can you believe it? And now, the CHALLENGE! It's quite simple: Build the most awesome mission you can think of using only ROUND-8 tanks to carry liquid fuel and oxidant. Please avoid using solid fuel motors except for stage separation, and don't abuse monopropellant. Mods are OK, however any entry that carries xenon fuel (booooo!!) for any reason will be disqualified with extreme prejudice! Hyperedit to get your ship to the interesting part of the mission is OK, but think how much more awesome your mission will be if you lift that 200 ton monster off Kerbin using nothing but ROUND-8 boosters. No other cheats (glitch abuse, infinite fuel, etc, etc) please. I know what some some of you are thinking: "But Kuzzter, this challenge is pointless! The ROUND-8 is so awesome that I have literally never used any other liquid fuel tank, ever!" But some others might be thinking "ROUND-8? I never figured out how to use the ROUND-6!" So here are some ideas: SSTO with ROUND-8! (you can drain the oxidant) Eve Ascent with ROUND8! (What's the only thing more awesome than a pancake? A pancake MADE OF DONUTS!) Huge Ships! Fast Ships! Jool Ships! Blue Ships! Scoring! What, scoring? You're actually serious about this? OK, OK, let me think of something... right, here we go. As entries appear I will make categories. I will put your entries into these categories arbitrarily and I will rank them arbitrarily on the leaderboard. Peer feedback on the thread will be taken into account. You will not get bent out of shape about any of this. Please? The whole point is to shower love upon the Great ROUND-8 and show all of Kerbin the versatility of this Great Little Tank. LEADERBOARD: #1 in Tearjerker Category: Kerdinand, ROUND-8 Memorial Gravestone #1 in Single Stage To(roidal) Orbit Category: Kuzzter, ROUND-SSTO #1 in Room with a View Category: n.b.z., ROUND8Trip ** #1 in I Broke the Universe Category: UpsilonAerospace #1 in Not Single Stage To(roidal) Orbit Category: Argon #1 in To Mun and Back in a Donut Category: Yukon0009, Apollo-Style #1 in LFO Capsule Painting Category: Mad Rocket Scientist, Minmus mission** #1 in Beachballs on Eve Category: Badsector, Eve 10k Lifter #1 in Single Stage To(roidal) Laythe and Back Category: Juzeris, Donutzer #1 in Swarming Satellites Category, Mallock #1 in Kerbal Coast Guard Category, BoobyTrapGaming, Save Jeb From Drowning! That, and Google Translate.
  19. For any challenges I may run in V1.0, modding to restore the ROUND-8 to its proper use shall not disqualify anyone from the "Stock Only" categories.
  20. That makes sense. Might I suggest that when we do so, we spread the work by setting up for peer review? For those that don't follow Jool-5, here is a recent post from Ziv that references the method: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/57197-The-Ultimate-Jool-5-Challenge-land-Kerbals-on-all-moons-and-return-in-one-big-mission?p=1838666#post1838666 We could even do peer review for the last few missions here, with Laie's approval and guidance of course. Anyone who's been to Eve and back without cheating should be able to look at anyone else's work, maybe ask a few relevant questions and have a respectful discussion about doubts, and finally say "yep, I think Mr. So-And-So really did get a Mk1 capsule to orbit by flinging from a trebuchet at the top of a mountain".
  21. Holy crap I've done just about everything in the game but I didn't know half these bindings. I want to do all my missions all over again just for the maneuver node fine control.
  22. That bit surprised me the most, I never would have thought of that. ^But listen to this guy, he has seen more Eve ascents than anyone else on the Forum. I did find that the aircraft gear bay was quite a good landing gear as well; I had less than a meter clearance to my engine bells and landed on an 8 degree slope with no damage. Others have done great things with a stack of cubic octagonal struts. Probably the worst landing gear you can pick are the actual so-called "landing legs".
  23. They've been made to work in 0.90, there was one in the light lifter challenge that used IIRC 14x ions. My attempt was close, would have made it if launched from altitude: ETA: but if ion thrust gets nerfed in-atmosphere, which has not been announced but is plausible... forget it.
