  1. I've heard of some estimates that put the return stage at about the size of a phone booth, but I don't remember the sample size. Edit: I take that back, the phone booth size rocket only takes it to orbit, it then transfers it to a Earth return vehicle. http://www.parabolicarc.com/2011/08/09/a-non-toxic-fuel-from-the-mojave-desert/
  2. Personally I would like to see the North or South pole looked at next. The south pole may even have more ice than the north, specifically Shackleton crater.
  3. I came across this project and was quite surprised that it had been resurrected. Back in the 60s Piasecki tried this concept out as the 16H Pathfinder and even tried to talk the military into modding the Cobra and Apache helicopters like this. There where others like the Lockheed AH-56 Cheyenne as well, but I never thought I would see it again. It completed it's phase 1 testing back in 2008 and I can't find if there was any phase 2. I know the vehicle was not selected to participate in the Future Vertical Lift program, so it may well be in storage now. 4. I think this is one of those areas where defining the exact criteria may not be possible, but is left to a general group consensus. There have been a couple of nonstop aircraft flights and balloon trips that some may argue as technically orbits too.
  5. They where made too thin and are coming apart. I thought they had some of these cracking issues with the two previous rovers too.
  6. I've wonder about that myself. It's so far from the Sun and then it's under heavy clouds. It might be hard to tell the difference between day and night.
  7. Well there is a reason the SLS is nicknamed the Senate Launch System. It supports a lot of jobs all over the country in both democratic and republican districts. I don't see that changing.
  8. It just seems odd that the Mars rover has a streamlined body.
  9. Never realized it was that yellow. I always thought it was gray with a tint of yellow/brown. Well that makes China's air quality look almost quaint.
  10. I wonder if that is a false color image. I'm surprised the sun's reflection is that yellow unless it is being tinted by titan's smoggy atmosphere.
  11. Selenium maybe? It's a rare element used for semiconductors.
  12. An Air-Augmented engine only works if there is a significant amount of oxidizer or fuel in a planet's atmosphere. There is a type of jet engine that is called an arcjet that can heat almost any type of atmosphere as reaction mass.
  13. Looks perfect as is. The only things I could suggest is an opening cargo bay and maybe a greenhouse, science bay?
  14. Art work by Rareden: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/25231-Rareden-s-Projects?p=791325&viewfull=1#post791325
  15. It was retired, but a new one is replacing it in the Marshall Islands. The military also use telescopes, passive receivers and several kinds of radar at sites all over the world.
  16. According to this NASA document: The Threat of Orbital Debris and Protecting NASA Space Assets from Satellite Collisions (2009). http://images.spaceref.com/news/2009/ODMediaBriefing28Apr09-1.pdf
  17. Have the Chinese said what approach they are going to use for a Moon landing? Could a modded Shenzhou dock with a lander in Lunar orbit?
  18. I don't think there is any reason for China to rush this. It's not like they are racing anyone. They need to test their rocket and test the new heat shield first. Maybe do both at the same time, then do a nine day or longer manned flight in orbit. It would probably be a good idea to do an unmanned Lunar flyby with all the flight hardware first.
  19. I hope we don't end up with a lot of new space technology so we can play space chicken and crazy Ivans with satellites instead of submarines.
  20. Infantry yes, but is the all tank Imperial force still viable with the new rules?
  21. It was to save money on the overall production costs. I haven't been following it much the last few years, so I'm not sure how well it work out in the end. Have a good job or rich indulgent parents. You can go with a vehicle heavy army and scratch build it. Orks are a good place to start scratch building. http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?244950-Tommygun-s-Xenotechnology&p=4550379&viewfull=1#post4550379 Imperial Guard are the next best. I made a complete armored force from scratch. http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?126270-Tommygun-s-Backwater-Forgeworld&p=4339470&viewfull=1#post4339470 http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?126270-Tommygun-s-Backwater-Forgeworld&p=4842382&viewfull=1#post4842382 Just get your plasticard or polystyrene from a sign shop or industrial supplier.
  22. I think those Rockets are called Smarties in the US. For me it's a tie between Snickers and Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.
  23. I can't remember what it is called, but they have something like a modern version of this on the space station. They have black circular spots painted on the station's modules. It's a type of video motion capture system. With the help of a computer program and cameras, they can move a module or supply craft around the station and know its precise location relative to the station.
