Realistic Solar System Spaceplanes MEGATHREAD

not valid post -
Yes, this is what I'm using to test the quadcopter idea. I'm considering a mission to both Laythe and Eve to test between atmospheric differences. It sounds like Eve may be the more interesting of the two, with the atmo pressure and the proximity to the sun due to the electric props by KAX. My test flight has a two prop drive that can run continuously on Kerbin, but only when the sun is at its "brightest" (midday). So far, my criteria includes: 1. Must be able to land and take off vertically (VTOL). If not, this would turn into a STOL aircraft mission. 2. Must be able to disengage from a "mothership" craft. I don't forsee being able to link back up with said mothership, but we'll see. 3. Must be able to use electric driven propulsion (KAX props/Ion). This will require generous solar panels/RTG while balancing the overall weight and actual flying time (this also has to factor in luminosity of sun/time of day).

Has anyone read this yet? http://sploid.gizmodo.com/nasa-wants-to-send-a-quadcopter-drone-to-titan-along-wi-1593024773 Challenge accepted..

Here's my take on a lightweight VTOL for scouting (Kerbin/Laythe), the ornithopter

Here's a revisit to an old low grav design that I dug out. Instead of a complicated refuel op, this unit is essentially the drive section for my long range explorer. Jeb & Bill stay in orbit while this drops down for extraction. When done, the unit reconnects with the ship and continues on. -
Realistic Solar System Crafts - MEGATHREAD
firegeek83 replied to Captain_Party's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here's my attempt at a realistic approach at a reusable vehicle between the Kerbin-Duna run. I decided not to send any kerman until they overcome the weightlessness problem (yep, that's where I draw the line for safety). I've made it so its a two kerbal craft, hence the "escape pods". When it becomes outdated, this vehicle can detach the engine section for use as a station over Duna. Recycling for the future! -
Thanks! It doesn't look like much, but this thing is a trooper. You can alternate between electric power and RCS for movement instead of a single point of locomotion (in case broken panels). Plus, you don't need a Kerman in order to use (those seats don't control it )

Yes you did! However, I wouldn't use such a control [cockpit] method for a rover for the reasons you cited. IMO, it tends to introduce issues when used as a rover instead of what it is designed for. But everyone has their own way of creation. BTW, I have done what you suggested before (weighed under 8 tons) and quickly realized the horrible design it was in low grav.

Had no problem with that here on the Mun (total trip mileage @ 37km+)

Has anyone had the issue with MJ showing up in Career mode, but not being available in VAB/SPH? I'm sure this has been already asked before (which I've been looking for the solution to). I'm not using MM or anything like that and it does show up as "purchased" in the science screen after I've researched it. I have both MJ AR202 features researched, but not the pod. Much appreciated if someone could point the way!

I'll say it again.....I'll never use a rover without active RCS suspension:) This little guy endured a 37km trip from the southwest crater to the Mun midlands (double science!!) and was able to link up with an old rescue skiff. Can't wait to see the top speed this thing can get on Duna flatland!

I want to see your Asteroid Tugs!

My first string lineup. Capture vehicle (ANCHOR) Tug (left) and Alignment vehicle (right) Alignment vehicle -
Step 1: test new mining rig on Mun. Step 2: totally forget about leg balance issues... Step 3: continue drilling even though it's going to tip over... Yep, finished mining/refining and then it went. At least Burns Slant Drilling Co. approves

.."I tell you what. You buy this ship, treat her proper - she'll be with you for the rest of your life..."

Trying out a new orbiting science platform. Can simultaneously transmit 5 data feeds for when rapid transmission is needed (such as those one way missions that end on the surface). After the third pass on a decaying orbit, we finally encounter Eve's PNR.

Has anyone gone up that tower on the island yet? Talk about a workout.. btw, Jeb only fell down three times on the way down..

You Squad have really outdone yourself with career mode. I wasn't excited at first hearing about it (yes, still holding out for resources like the other children), but after playing career mode for an hour...wow, 2 hours now.. this is EXACTLY what was needed. Good call. I'm as excited now as I was when I first found KSP (.16) and now I have to explore everywhere haha. You guys did a great and we all appreciate the effort! BTW: Biome specific experiments = genius!

haha...I actually plan on going to Vall first and then on to Laythe, if everything goes smoothly.

Here's my test DSV. Yep, totally inspired by Europa Report (awesome movie) and I had to see if I could create a ship that worked like the Europa One (ironically, my Europa One was a horrible disaster...). After making a test run on the Mun (and crew change), I think a few more tweaks are needed before I make a Joolian run. Separation of command module/lander Final landing config After refueling, a quick group photo. Engine Section shows up at the right time! Command & Engine once again linked....confirmed hard seal Heading home...

Here's my long term successor to the CMP series that is designed to be a one way mining platform. Can be placed in low grav or atmosphere bodies. Provides 3-way connection to fuel transfer vehicles for rapid refueling ops with ground shuttles. -

Here's my trip to Ike with my CMP4. Nothing new here, just eye candy. -

Here's a new addition to my CMP series, the CMP4. Using the same mining platform as the CMP3, the CMP4 has expanded fuel capacity that also has KAS grappling hooks/electromagnets. Basically, the end result is a long range mining platform that doubles as a SAR vessel when needed. -
Love your work Rareden! I'm curious on how you select the pieces you create. Do you just take the occasional request or do you sift through the mountain of requests from everyone until you find that "one"?
