Unstable as in losing accuracy over time? Of course. It's called drift or noise and it's usually inversely proportional to the cost of the device. For example, if you take a look at the low cost MPU-6050 datasheet, you may find it is specified as 0,05 °/s. It may not sound a lot but it means that in 10 minutes you can expect it to be 30° off. One of the approaches to dealing with this (other than throwing money at it) is to use two different devices - one that is very precise but not accurate (a gyroscope that drifts), and one that is not so precise but is accurate and doesn't drift (accelerometer). You take accelerometer data to calibrate and cancel the long term drift of the gyro, but use gyro for short term attitude sensing.

Not particularly. There are plenty of off the shelf solutions using I2C. I'm also sure you won't have much trouble finding relevant libraries.
-
Sure there is a way. Just put multiple whiles one after the other. If the first while is not satisfied, the code will check if the condition for the second one is. If that one is not satisfied either, the next one is checked. That being said, do yourself a favor and read (and preferably understand) what I posted earlier.

Antimatter.. how good is it for propulsion?

Math seems to check out. -

Nope. Fission transforms only tiny fraction of matter into energy. Since normal matter is free, anihilation (100% matter to energy transformation) will always be more bangy. -

I'm trying to wrap my head around it, but just can't figure out why you specify 97 000 tons? False precision is a thing. -

Yesterday I finally gave in and started reading the Culture series by Iain M. Banks. So far so good. I'm at the part where that one guy says: Oh wait, wrong guy... Never mind, move along. -
Those things produce thrust, similar to conventional sails. The Waterworld thing is likely something else: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_axis_wind_turbine
-
When the sail is in use the turbine is folded and not spinning. Don't you dis the trimaran, that thing is amazing. I want one.

Four is not the only dangerous number. Depending on your location and coworkers you can be perceived as universally vulgar.

Yeah but if you get carried away and punch the increment button a few too many times, suddenly your next order for the cookie dough is short and everybody goes hungry. World food shortage level hungry, just because you didn't use unsigned for counting physical objects. OP, get yourself a mechanical clicky counter. They are ~$1 shipped. Much more comfortable to use than walking around a construction site having one of your hands in an awkward metal hand sign.

Hmm, do we know who is the target audience? If it's pure tourists, then those are some serious money people. I would suspect that even the very rich folk don't spend $50M on a whim. You need to be filthy rich for this kind of a joy ride. Speaking of insurance, I obviously can't say for sure, but i would not be a surprised Pikachu if life insurance for someone worth billions was a bit more expensive than my own. On the other hand, if these people are "regular" people / scientists and their trip is paid by the institution they work for (BTW, I want to work for that institution), what institution has that kind of money? I can't think of many; or one.

Time on ISS: ($40 000/day) * 60 days = $2 400 000 Training: ($5 000/day) * 360 days = $1 800 000 It's a long road up to $50 M, even with me being generous, both with cost and time for training.

I don't doubt that. I'm not questioning their SEO, I'm certain it's top notch. Wouldn't Vangelis single handedly be sufficient for a round trip?

During the Oumuamua hype it literally was all three at the same time.

It's Aussiefied on both my PC (Opera) and phone (Chrome). BTW, the default Windows image viewer has the capability to rotate images.

For some reason my news feed always has something from Express. The titles usually look something like: NASA asteroid SHOCK: an ASTEROID the size of a HOUSE just BARRELED past Earth at the distance of less than TEN TIMES the MOON. Caps and all, with an image of 500-ish km asteroid impacting Earth. Swiping it away does not help.

Optimal shape for massive SSTO scifi spaceships
Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
It doesn't need to be sci fi at all. Thrusters can cancel the initial torque needed to spin up, after that you don't need them other than to compensate for friction. Any shape will require this for spin up. I'm more concerned with gyroscopic effect it would have on maneuvering (again, same problem for any shape) unless there are two halves spinning in opposite directions (still huge forces). -

Shpaget replied to Spacescifi's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Didn't you say that yout ships have shielding against gravity? If so, the shape is irrelevant. A cube is the simplest and cheapest to build and utilize. It also provides good, stable base so it doesn't topple over or rolls down a hill. -

Speaking of museums and kids... As I said in the model train thread, we are having an exhibition which is held in the local technical museum. It's the museum I've been to at least 20 times, but never got the chance to visit the mine (the thing where they dig up things, not the blowy upy thingy) they have (a simulation of course). The mine is usually closed for the public and available only with a museum tour guide, and I never got to enter it. Today I decided to take a stroll through the museum and got to tag along with a group of ten year olds for a tour of the mine. It's much bigger than I expected, roughly 300 meters of narrow tunnels. I also tagged along with another group for a planetarium show, another part of the museum available only with tour. I've been there before, but it's always nice to see it again. There's one more thing which is usually closed to general public I need to see - a tiny (15 meter long) 4 crew submarine from WWII. Since these days I get to talk with museum staff on daily basis, I have a promise they'll let me in before our exhibition ends. -
That is not how you want to do this. You need to rapidly check each sensor, do attitude calculation and find out what to do to correct it. All this has to happen hundreds if not thousands of time per second. You don't want any predetermined period of corrective action. Each time you go through all the sensors you want to recalculate that corrective action. Look into PID controller.
-
Why would you want to block your code? If you don't need to do anything, just don't do it yet, but don't tell the program to grind to a halt. Sure, if you need to do one thing in regular intervals, it will do, but if you want more than one thing happening in different intervals the code will become entirely unwieldy. It's bad practice.
