Design a game where human has advantage over computer
Shpaget replied to RainDreamer's topic in The Lounge
Why not go half a step further and unplug it? The thing is that a sufficiently advanced AI (which is the assumption in OP), would be good enough to beat the human at any arbitrarily lowered CPU power. It would even be powerful enough to predict the possibility of unpluging and take precautions against that. You can't go against the logic of "beating an AI that is as powerful as it needs to be to be unbeatable".- 48 replies

Manifesto of the Committee to Abolish Outer Space
Shpaget replied to lajoswinkler's topic in The Lounge
So, when I take an x-ray of my broken bone, does that make the fracture a lie? An image done by an electron microscope is also a lie? -
Design a game where human has advantage over computer

No. "Always" is such a long time, and "no matter how advanced the AI" is by definition advanced enough to beat a human in any field.- 48 replies

Name the Moon petition to the IAU (Not mine)
Shpaget replied to Spaceception's topic in Science & Spaceflight
There are no "moons" there is only one Moon. The category is "satellite". The stuff humans (and aliens) launch is in category "artificial satellite". -
I don't follow you reasoning. They are able to abort, hence not ready for manned flight?? How does that follow? The capsule uses retro thrusters to slow down. That's what causes the dust cloud, not the impact.
-
Well, that's quite withing the "same rocket" idea I have in my mind. Igniters are consumables and chutes are safety concern and not really relevant for the "rocket" part of the whole business.
-
When they say "the same rocket..." what exactly do they mean? Does anybody know? Does that mean, just refuel and relaunch? Or is it some minor scrubbing of the nozzle? Maybe a turbopump overhaul? Engine replacement? What amount of maintenance and part replacement is needed for the rocket to stop being "the same"?

They really should do live streaming. GG BO

This real life Star Wars duel is prettty legit :D
Shpaget replied to Spaceception's topic in The Lounge
I would consider accepting that explanation if lightsabers were real. Since they are not, I'll just attribute it to sloppy choreography. -

Very few of the strikes seem to be aimed at the opponent. Most would just miss even if the opponent never moved. Basically, they are swinging their swords at the other guys sword, not body. -
Shoemaker Levy was not only significantly larger, it was also a predicted impact, meaning many different (and large) observatories could prepare themselves and record the event. This was a small rock that was unexpected and the low resolution of the video doesn't offer much data.
-
Well, it's not really significant, is it? It's a huge deal for the amateur that happened to have his scope pointed in the right direction and the camera rolling, but the video of the impact is of little scientific value and we know that Jupiter gets hit a lot anyway. This is just another rock, among uncountably many others that collided with something.

Tech Tool Tourney 2016 (KSP needs your vote!)

Minecraft no longer in the competition? I expected it to win. I'll start eating my hat. -
There are also sonic weapons. The tech behind them is quite cool.

Created an account just to respond and you expect us to take your word? You do realize how fishy that sounds?
-
What sort of analisys do you have in mind and why do you need raw for it? Why not jpg? As for raw files, look into CHDK for Canon point and shoot cameras. The list of supported cameras is quite long.

I played the game exactly once. Bought it, downloaded, installed, started and got immersed. 5 hours later and with a few thousand inhabitants strong, the game just crashed. No worries, I'll just load an autosave and resume... Now, where did they put those autosaves? A few minutes of searching the folders and a google search later I find out that there are no autosaves. Mild ragequit, but quit nonetheless. Now I see that they've released a patch that includes the autosave feature. I might give the game another go.

Bigger developers tried and failed to make such software. For $20, I'd rather buy myself a RAM stick and an icecream.

Tech Tool Tourney 2016 (KSP needs your vote!)
Shpaget replied to Tex Mechs Robot's topic in The Lounge
With such fan voting system I just can't see the purpose. It's no longer an award for best game, or best learning tool, but a popularity contest and the fanboyism wins. -
My favorite is Voyager. It has the prettiest ship and being set in the most distant future gets the most advanced tech. TNG has Picard, which is awesome. Also Borg. And Q. And Whoopi. On the downside, Will Wheaton, his mother and Cpt Troi the Obvious. DS9... that kid can get annoying, and Odo is waaay OP, so what does he do all the time? He solves petty crimes. Enterprise is slow. TOS is obsolete. The hand to hand combat is just awful, visual effects are outdated to the point of silliness, dialogue is funny... Did I mention Voyager is pretty? It also has Janeway and 7.

Large file size is not something that should deter you from using Fraps, if you have no problem storing that one video capture you are currently working on. Once you edit and render the video you get rid of the original huge file (or replace it with a compressed one). Why would you keep raw footage?
