Why is there landing gear?

Blue is the sky, brown is kerbin. The yellow thing WITHOUT the cross is the direction you are going, the one WITH the cross is exactly opposite to the direction you are heading (for orbital purposes).

I landed at about 6 m/s. I just happened to be on a mountain and broke it on the way down.

The only problem I had was when I tried to land this hunk of metal without any gear whatsoever. The engines are gimballed so that may count for something too. I tried to keep the throttle right down so that we had a speed of around 100 m/s which would leave us flying just about level (slightly upwards so we could drop throttle even more every so often).

My minecraft isn\'t exactly registered... or bought. Does it need authentication from the server? Yes. Yes it does. Oh well count me out then.
