[Showcase] Engine Clustering!
TheAndrewTaco replied to TheAndrewTaco's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
If I knew that, I'd be an actual engineer. But KER and Mechjeb both agree with my math, so I'd like to think it's in the ballpark. -
If you're like me and you're completely and utterly dissatisfied with the stock engines (Or the mod ones), or perhaps want something to fit a specific need, engine clustering is the way to go. Additionally, if you know the math, you can very easily engineer them as you like. In any case, engine clustering is simply the best way to take on the job. So let's see yours! Stock or otherwise is absolutely fine. I'll start: Presenting the Asimov 1B. 970 kilo-newtons of thrust, specific impulse of 443 seconds, weighing in at approximately 8.5 tons, and, according to my chicken-scratch mathematics, capable of turning an orange tank into an SSTO. I apologize in advance. I can't read my handwriting either.

I know stations don't have much scientific use in career mode, and that there's already a thread for regular stations, but I enjoy the challenge of building something small and functional with few parts. Since construction of my station began I've made it pretty far through the tech tree, but it's still restricted by the original lifter that I built- It's a basic orbital debris-free design, with a tug for rendezvous. On the top there is the somewhat useless research module. Also, I'm good with names. Here's the station as of earlier today- 3 or 4 hours of pure launches to put that together. Went through some crew rotations too. Let's see your stations!

What do you name your space agencies?
TheAndrewTaco replied to GalaxyGryphon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My save doesn't have any special name, because I only use the one, besides career mode. I really like the idea of spacefaring corporations, Wayland-Yutani, SpaceX, etc, so the name I use is Arakyd Industries, after the robotics company in Star Wars. Not for any particular reason other than it sounds cool. I even have a flag, photoshopped by yours truly. -
How do you build your ships/planes/whatever? Do you throw it together on a whim? Do you put it through planning stages? Do you calculate and conform the craft to design requirements? Do you prototype it? Revise it? Come forth and share your design process with the community! Tips, tricks, and all else are more than welcome! I'll start- I like to build spacecraft that fit the requirements of my mission as exactly as possible. I've taken to doing a lot of sketching in study hall or other free times as a first phase, like this: My handwriting is bad and my artistic skill is worse, but hey, I try. Anyways, from here I'll carry the design over into the game. I don't have any actual pics of this. Notice the word "attempt" at the top of the doodle. Ran out of fuel, badly. But that's just me. How do you build spacecraft?

Looks fantastic! What's the part count? -
Tadpole - Light VTOL Lander & LV (100 Parts!)
TheAndrewTaco replied to Cupcake...'s topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Once again, your ability to design crazy-yet-functional VTOL craft is matched only by your music taste. -
If you're ever short on names, I like to go here and scroll down to the ships section: http://namingschemes.com/Halo

Short on time today, but I was able to put a deep space telescope in high orbit, then send up a module for supplies and maintenance.

Killing your Kerbals: does it make you feel bad?
TheAndrewTaco replied to Boris_T_Roach's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I try to play the game like a real civilian space exploration corporation, strange as that sounds. For me, kerbals are valuable. All my flights are unmanned. The kerbals themselves are only sent up to a space station or colony or whatever when construction has been completed by unmanned craft and safety is guaranteed. So far this version I have had exactly 0 casualties. -
The White Knight (virgin galactic inspired)
TheAndrewTaco replied to mellojoe's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Is this White Knight capable of traveling to and returning from, say, the Crusades? For real though, well done! I love the design. Not quite SSTO but I would agree it is in the style of Virgin Galactic or SpaceX. -
Manned orbiter megathread.
TheAndrewTaco replied to Drunkrobot's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Oddly enough, Turd, my standard launch platform is somewhat similar to yours: Here's the drive section. Over 3 k/s dV, capable of traveling to the Mun, performing multiple rendezvous, and returning without an aerobrake maneuver. Also transports up to 15 tons without issue. Docking at my top secret research facility in high Munar orbit. Rendezvous at a transit hub over Kerbin, designed for shuttles moving through the Kerbin SOI. -
Manned orbiter megathread.
TheAndrewTaco replied to Drunkrobot's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Here's my Falcon 9-ish orbiter. Three stages, enough fuel to make an efficient rendezvous (but no docking clamp). -
My newest interplanetary craft, designation IEV "Nebuchadnezzar". Right now she's about 90% complete and waiting for an upcoming Eve launch window.

Post your heavy lifters!
TheAndrewTaco replied to musicpenguin's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I'd also like a closer look at your lifter, Levelord, if you wouldn't mind sharing the .craft. -
Kerbal Powers Roleplay
TheAndrewTaco replied to The Fleet Master's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Most of my craft are stock, yeah. In my case, mods are used for station addons, KSSPP, Kethane, FusTek, etc. Everything else is stock. If needed I can redesign stations for a shared persist file. -
Kerbal Powers Roleplay
TheAndrewTaco replied to The Fleet Master's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
Arakyd Industries wishes to enter the fray. We are a commercial mining and research company currently operating on and around the Mun. Primarily we focus on fuel and development of new spacecraft. We can neither confirm nor deny inquiries into weapons development. Here's a sampling of what Arakyd has been up to- Low orbit mining outpost, unmanned but capable of supporting life. Designation "Dromund Kaas". A lovely view from the interior of a research facility in high orbit, designation "Seraph". Permanent residential station in LKO. Further construction cancelled due to 3 FPS, unfortunately. Designation "Leviathan". Arakyd Industries currently stands neutral, and is willing to contract fuel shipments or scientific information to other corporations or governments. -

the DOMINATOR comes in any color you like. All you have to do is telepathically acknowledge its universal message of peace, love, and the flames of war and death left in its wake, and the DOMINATOR's color will change to whatever you desire. -

Multiplayer trading
TheAndrewTaco replied to Pixel of Life's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
Trading techs from the tree would be kind of cheaty, because for some amount of money or resources you could acquire any tech effortlessly, thereby killing off a core concept of career mode. Also, the tech would rapidly spread through the market until it becomes worthless because everyone would have it.
