So long as we also include the wormball ;p

Your wish is that 5 years of philosophy is required for any scientific curriculum, and I grant it. Oh screw you, not because you're wrong but because you're RIGHT! All of Science comes down to what is collectively accepted as truth, thus leaving open the philosophical question of whether it is truth. I wish people would have more philosophical discussions without trying to use science to "disprove" something that cannot be disproved.

Okay, I press the button to erase my prior button but then your button never occurs which means I never undo my prior button, but because I never undid my prior button you offer your button which I press which then undoes my prior button pressing which hence removes your button. Press the button to end this time loop or leave me here to my insanity

It's philosophy, I'm mixing topics (mind-body and sentience) to sort of talk about the idea that the body can have its own intelligence and hence question what intelligence really is. The topic gets complex really quickly as there is plenty that shows mind-body is imperative in the "native" development of intelligence (our ability to use and form tools, for instance, lead the the development of later technologies.) Rodney Brooks, famed roboticist, noted the impracticality of developing an AI without allowing it to perform actions in the world it is meant to interact in (http://people.csail.mit.edu/brooks/papers/representation.pdf).

Meh, then I go back to my classic of slime mold, wonderful stuff. http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=Slime+mold+intelligence * Note to self though, I really should go back and read the studies on cockroach intelligence. My recollection is that they had a primitive "sort of like, but not exactly" CNS. Different enough that I thought it'd matter, at least.

Granted, you now know everything there is to know, including the memories and emotions of the billions of humans tortured over the years... the weight of this alone drives you to insanity and you are locked up in a nuthouse. I wish people were intelligent enough to understand when they're debating philosophy.

Cockroaches have no central processing and will show the same behaviour as... DIE... stop escaping... ignore the argument all you want, but central nervous system is something that describes what we OBSERVE to be a prerequisite for intelligence IN OURSELVES. But isn't it? We haven't defined sentient in a concrete matter yet, now we're just using pathos attacks to claim superiority over our own body, but does your sentience beat your own heart? Does your sentience inform you when you are hungry, when your arm feels tired? Is your body what controls you, or are you controlling your body. After all, multi-cellular organisms came to being, not to be your SLAVES but to have increased SURVIVAL. That means your functions, in fact all multi-cellular organisms' functions, are performed in act of protecting the largest collection of independent organisms. The "self preservation" instilled in yourself, what point is it if the only aspect of your body that matters is your brain? You see, your body is the sentient part, your mind only acts in service to it. Oh, I'm bored now. But that you all think you can argue philosophy with "science" is amusing, if not ignorant. You really can't because "sentience" is not a scientific term, its a human term, and reflects upon our xenophobia, our need to distance ourselves from things that are not like us.

MPEG is likely higher quality, but I do confess not having looked deeply into the algorithm behind it. As I said, he CAN use external memory. SIMD being what made the processing possible is, however, bunk. Old dos games had video to hell, never needed anything special but they weren't "high quality." What you're talking about makes it easier to have higher quality video with high quality compression, to calculate more effects and compression, but absolutely nothing to do with pure difference frames and hence lower levels of compression. Pure difference frames can be calculated as fast as the image compression routine. Adding in complex equations to describe the "flow" of pixel regions helps, but is the next stage, not the first stage.

http://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/images/333653main_16-lg.jpg It appears close enough to be on the original (no crapipedia), so it likely is initials. Artists are well known for hiding their initials in some way on their artwork, sometimes even in unique and different ways.

I can't say that I've heard of it, but I do wish it for the best. Just remember that 14 years is a long time, a good portion of the creative talent behind the originals have sought employment elsewhere, despite some of it currently trying to drive the creation of the new game. It always is nice though, to hear someone giving the old classics the attention they deserve.

Well, I figured since Steam has its own thread, our favourite DRM Free store also should have its own thread. http://www.gog.com/game/kerbal_space_program Go wild ;p

I'd have to go read up on it, but it sounds like you're reinventing the wheel... poorly.* Image compression and video compression are VERY different, so much that you can get a major boost from switching to video compression as many formats will record the changes between images rather than be a collection of compressed images. They're also designed for line by line streaming / decompression (or that feature can be enabled, I forgot the term though)... I don't have the full idea of what you intend to accomplish and while doing jpeg-likes will net you quite a bit of compression, if it just passes right on through the micro-controller you don't really need each frame per second but what to change to get to the next frame. *I don't really know how else to describe this. I think you have a channel between two arduinos and are trying to transmit data along it... but the data being transmitted exceeds your bandwidth. It isn't like you can't use external memory, and doing so would greatly benefit your ability to transmit compressed data across the channel. *It isn't so much that I don't approve of figuring it out yourself, but that you're doing image compression when you should be doing some form of video compression and I think you missed the point of why you were compressing the stream.

That's because this, again, is philosophy. The "really big question" is if sentience is something that is modeled after humans, or a state of being in itself. i.e. Slime mold is fascinating as it appears to act as if it is capable of independent thought but it utterly lacks that "brain" organ we're so proud and attached to. Do we rationalize that the intelligence displayed by slimemold is "just chemical" and hence meaningless, while neglecting that our own intelligence is little more than "just ion pumps, electrical impulses, and some chemical interactions." (While I would have greatly preferred to have read the study in question, it wouldn't have changed the arguing of its validity)

What will be the next space event to get live TV coverage?
Fel replied to FishInferno's topic in The Lounge
Pedophile Escapes on Mars One, rocket ordered to turn around. Mars Crew Member Moons the Earth, exclusive video footage revealed. Mars Crew Turns Cannibal as Food Supplies run low, dead bodies being used as fertilizer. While you can get "live news coverage" any day of the week for a few seconds, to become the real media hotspot you need some kind of disgusting twist. It's called the Entertainment Media for a reason, you know ;p (Do note: I'm just talking about the state of society as it is, the news is populated with items more for their shock value than for their actual importance to society.) -
Silly PakledHostage, any mouse would tell you, two threads are better than one!

XD I remember that just by the title and the reference XD I'd say it is unlikely the official document that lead to the change, but easily likely a joke "leaked" to create viral advertisement. Still as utterly absurd as when I first read it. All Illuminati at first, then acting like we're talking about material physics, orbital mechanics, and all sorts of insanity.

I drop a nuke on your button because it is too illogical. Press the button to start development on KSP 2.0 at the cost of ending development of KSP 1.0.
-
Granted, we no longer hide in the shadows but make our presence known to the world. We are the Illuminati and this is OUR time! I wish that it was illegal to create a MEME.
