  1. I agree that blaming the testers themselves isn't fair. One thing I'm curious about is sort of a dissection of how an individual bug makes it into the release. One I'm particularly interested in is the heatshield causing capsules to flip on reentry. How does that happen?
  2. I've got a workaround for that issue as well. Just close the fairing early and fill in the empty space with parts.
  3. This one's more of a PSA than a technique, but here it is. So the new fairing code has some quirks, and one of them is that you cannot replicate fairings with symmetry. This is extremely important for making R7/Soyuz boosters. The Workaround Make your booster using the new fairing system. Once you're ready to add more boosters, like the 4 on the Soyuz, take your booster and make it into a subassembly. Once you've done that, you'll need to pull a new subassembly each time. Slightly annoying, but it's better than having to re-create the fairing each time!
  4. Pretty much. Oh well, the game should play better after this.
  5. Maybe we just need to convince them that it's really "Kerbal" to start an engine in an enclosed space.
  6. From what I've read, there are some wonky things going on with the heat system. Craft should require a heatshield to survive reentry. I feel like there must be a way to accomplish this while still making spaceplanes feasible.
  7. Ah sorry, I didn't think to search before posting this thread. Maybe the threads can be merged?
  8. Thanks Claw. I will endeavor to model future bug reports on this one. I wish I'd applied to join the experimentals team way back when I had a chance.
  9. After playing 1.0, I have to say that it really was not ready. They tried to add too much, and they weren't able to pull it off without numerous bugs. Balance and polish are also really lacking. I get the feeling that new features simply were not tested sufficiently.
  10. Custom interstage fairings prevent engines from firing because they are "stowed." http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/117109-Bug-Engine-cannot-activate-while-stowed
  11. It's really odd because rocket engine thrust should not have anything to do with airflow/occlusion. They work in a vacuum, after all. - - - Updated - - - That doesn't achieve the look I want.
  12. It does work when staging the fairing first of course, but there are lots of real-life interstages that di not come apart. We should be able to replicate that in KSP.
  13. Interstages don't work. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/117109-Bug-Engine-cannot-activate-while-stowed?p=1872063#post1872063
  14. Actually, larger fuel tanks are more complicated to engineer, as I understand it. I can't pretend to understand it very well, but I have read that the larger a pressure vessel is, the more difficult it is to manufacture.
  15. There is a decoupler between the fairing base and the engine. Note my re-creation steps.
  16. So far, not so great The new fairings can't really do what I want them to do and the wing segment fairings seem to disagree with the new aero.
  17. While using the new fairings as interstages, I've discovered that engines cannot seem to fire from within the interstage on staging. They give an error that says "[Engine] cannot activate while stowed." Here's a screenshot: In this picture, there is a Skipper located within that conical fairing section. Re-creation steps: Build an upper stage, place a decoupler under the engine, then place a fairing base under the decoupler. Close the fairing on the upper stage, creating an interstage fairing. Try to decouple the upper stage and fire the engine. The engine will not activate, and it displays the error above. This is obviously a problem, because it makes interstage fairings useless. An example of such an interstage is the one between the S-II and S-IVB stages on the Saturn V.
  18. Haha, glad I'm not the only one who noticed that.
  19. Why is this tagged as "not a bug/intended"? If this fundamentally breaks reentry, then there is no way it was intended to be that way. This is clearly a bug/unintended consequence.
  20. You're going to have to re-learn how to fly rockets. It will be like when you first started playing the game, which is fun!
  21. Looks like I need to update the thread. I haven't played 1.0 yet, but the fairings sound worse than I thought
