Nice... what a fuel route engineer does? Also, I imagine that you actually knew, I just said it with irony Here I need to disagree, standards make work in the theoretical world, but in the real world that is rarely taken care. Unless you are in a very seriously country, as Canada. So the solution is wait for help that you dont know if it will come?Yeah, if you are close to a military base, and this military base was not compromised, and they dont kill you in your approach.. then yeah.. you might be secure, but if the chaos keeps spreading, then the military can not do much. I am trying to explain something from my first post.. but without luck.. The problem is not just higher demand and low power generation, you also need to care to not produce more than the power demand or the grid will be several damaged, why you think that under huge demand lost almost all power stations shutdown automatically.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_outage "Protecting the power system from outages: In power supply networks, the power generation and the electrical load (demand) must be very close to equal every second to avoid overloading of network components, which can severely damage them. Protective relays and fuses are used to automatically detect overloads and to disconnect circuits at risk of damage. Under certain conditions, a network component shutting down can cause current fluctuations in neighboring segments of the network leading to a cascading failure of a larger section of the network. This may range from a building, to a block, to an entire city, to an entire electrical grid. Modern power systems are designed to be resistant to this sort of cascading failure, but it may be unavoidable (see below). Moreover, since there is no short-term economic benefit to preventing rare large-scale failures, researchers have expressed concern that there is a tendency to erode the resilience of the network over time, which is only corrected after a major failure occurs. In a 2003 publication, Carreras and co-authors claimed that reducing the likelihood of small outages only increases the likelihood of larger ones.[1] In that case, the short-term economic benefit of keeping the individual customer happy increases the likelihood of large-scale blackouts." Also military guards nuclear plants, to avoid anyone from outside enters... so is not a place where you can go to ask for help. They duty is to keep all in control, so the workers can try to avoid a meltdown.
-
I know.. but you know what is all that fuel for? To keep the reactor cool after shutdown... And it would not last much with that chaos everywhere. Why? Because nuclear plants (with very few exceptions) were only designed to survive local failures, not a full system by several days. Because if that things happens, very unlikely would be a justice system searching people to blame after that. A zombie apocalypse seems unlikely, but a strong solar flare or EMP that overload the grid is not. Some nuclear plants might have safety shutdown mechanism or enoght fuel if there is people to control it, but they would last few months, not sure if it would be enoght to reach the cold shutdown. Well, in that case yeah.. they will keep the water.. but water is the most easy to get.. You just need to collect it when it rains. You have much faith in the human race. The real problem if you are in a supermarket with full supplies, it will be the other humans who need those supplies and they will kill for them. Yeah but that last cant happen, the systems that keeps the grid loads on control are very complex, in some cases a reverse energy flow can blow up the same energy sources. The same that I said up there.. You should read more about load balance techniques and power distribution with demand. There are very complex mechanism responsible to keep all working, even with that you have big voltage changes at some hours, but they are very susceptibles to fail on accidents or natural disasters. When pieces start to fall, all fall. That is why the best thing to do is to start shutdown all the power. That is another task.. to think in good uses for electricity after an apocalyse.
-
heh, how in the hell you plan to manage a nuclear plant by you own? First you need electricity to manage a nuclear plant. Even with its backup supply, it would be impossible to manage all that.. also you need to produce the amount of power that you will consume, because if you dont.. you overload the powerlines and all the system. The most probably is that mostly all nuclear plants (with some exceptions of new designs) would end with a meltdown few days after power loss. Workers would not stay in the power plants when their families need help. Also with so many systems failing in the cities, it will be pointless. Water would last only for 1 day after power loss (similar to natural gas), tanks might look big, but they are quite small compared with consumption, the main objective of gravity tanks, is to balance the consumption rate with the power of the pumps. Also not all towns and cities use gravity tanks, some use pressurized systems from ground which cost less. The best location that I would choose to stay is in a self-sustaining house, those very far from cities. Cities without power are completely pointless, they are a deathtrap.

But that version is still from 0.90 dont you? Yeah I want both, remove the parts from the list and save memory and loading time. But my second question was if is possible to make an script to be active when the game loads (or just as a secondary app) which would modify all save games and crafts files remplacing all stock parts for procedural parts which properties match the stock parts remplaced. Something like this: craft file: Jumbo tank: PART { part = fuelTank3-2_4294665960 pos = 0.2985083,16.93438,-0.9134084 attPos0 = 0,-4.22924,0 MODULE { name = BBModule isEnabled = True EVENTS { } ACTIONS { } } remplaced by Procedural Part with equal size than the jumbo tank. PART { part = proceduralTankRealFuels_4294653782 pos = 0.2985083,16.93437,-0.9134084 attPos0 = 0,-4.229246,0 MODULE { name = ProceduralShapeCylinder isEnabled = True diameter = 2.5 length = 7.5 diameter_UIEditor { controlEnabled = True ....... But some values as position which should not change also change I guess (barely). So not sure if is possible.
-
only days, depending how fast the zombie apocalypse spread. If there is nobody to balance charges of all different energy sources plus the lack of power needed by the people who is dead and all factories or works that are not active, then your power lines overload and burn. So to resume, in any caos situation, cities fall pretty fast.
-
Hey, maybe I will ask something crazy or it was asked before (but I could not find it) 1-There is a mod (working with this version) that allows to delete or not show all stock parts which are remplaced with this mod? 2- Is possible to delete those parts but keep compatibility with old saves or stock craft? For example, if we have 2 jumbo tanks and one t800, it would be possible that instead load that part, it load the procedural part with the jumbo tank and t800 parameters? So it remplace each tank with 1 procedure?

Operating Robots on the Moon from Earth-Moon L2.
AngelLestat replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
you dont need so many launches.. In fact 2 would be enoght to carry more equipment that the one used in one of the apollo missions. If your equipments weight is reduce it to half, then your proppelent is also reduced, and instead use 300s isp as the apollo program, you can use hydrogen with 450s. Computers and all kind of cameras or sensors weight a order of magnitud less that in those times. Inflatable modules, etc. -

AngelLestat replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
I dont understand what bares bones means.. But again, all the equipment and module can be much more lighter, the only thing that dint change much is the proppelent to land and take off. Hydrogen is great for that. And even if you want to carry more stuff, why you need a saturn 5?? Just launch multiple falcon heavy. Inside the fairings of a falcon heavy can enter a bus, the cost of a SLS launch vs falcon heavy there is not comparison. -

AngelLestat replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Depending the amount of revenues they got from that war, but even with that, funding science and exploration creates higher revenues. They would not have so many scientist and entrepreneurs in US without the apollo program. Also today you dont need a saturn5 for a manned mission to the moon. I guess a Falcon Heavy would be enoght. All things are lighter today. -
But... winter is coming.. In fact I am already in winter.

Operating Robots on the Moon from Earth-Moon L2.
AngelLestat replied to fredinno's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Yeah, is not enoght to command it as a first person shooter game, but it would be enoght 2.5 seconds would be the ping, even in the other size over relay. That is one of the reason I said its kinda pointless manned missions to the moon. Better use that money in manned missions to Mars or Venus where you can not take real time decisions. -
It is your topic and we were only 3, but yeah, now more arrive, but allow me a final answer on this. Then it must be a very similar formation case, and I found another photo of pampero from a turist in Buenos Aires that show the same multiple cigars as the morning glory: Here you can see some variances: http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2127/2394774432_81546fc1fe_m.jpg http://www.yachtmollymawk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/17-December-pampero-in-Argentina.jpg http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3MuRP-_o_DY/UL1ALG19aJI/AAAAAAAAITw/DQ4e3Xea2to/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG https://santiagodelrio.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/santiago-del-rio_corrientes-15.jpg?w=640&h=427 http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2274/2361256543_8248b02436_m.jpg And looking for english articles I found that even Jules Verne wrote about the Pampero in one of his books, descripted with his own words. http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/reports/wind/The-Pampero.htm As you said, after so many years, we need to find if they survives to the climate change. Ok, now I am jealous, heh, I will love to do that, but here in buenos aires you dont have any cliff to launch which makes it more expensive. Also as you see, there are times that the pampero carry heavy rain clouds which would not be very safe to ride them. It seems that they get benefic from the air stream on the clouds, is sad that nobody tries here, or they do but without sharing. Looking that I found this which would be also amazing to use: It also can be used with a tiny electric motor to those who has no cliff to launch. Every time we are more close to the sky. Ah, that place is call Calafate, I imagine that they use thermals to rise over the montains (andes, fitz roy), then all the wind comming from chile, strikes in the Andes and rise, using that you can reach the jet stream which usually is always there, but not sure with what purpose or what are the properties of that Jet Stream.

Ah bertha, I remember, is increidible that those low pressure center can reach so at north some times.. It seems that it took the race committee underguard. Cool. Some times I wish to have some of those fluid softwares and learn to use them, but just to play and test crazy ideas, but is not like I can get some real benefic from it In that case, your number must be accurate enoght. Yeah, there are some places where winds are highly amplify. I visit one of those, the game was drop rough rocks over the cliff and see how they come back. Now there are signs to not do it, because you can harm other turist Seems interesting, Maybe I will read it later if is good, because for sure the movie will skip a lot of science plot. Dunno, I cant think in any other possible plot which may be also fun to read/watch. In other mars movies, those plot are very syfy. wow... that looks cool, many of those cigar at equal distance.. that is really weird. It seems that they work similar to the Pampero taking into account the wind properties. I never see a Pampero from above. We dont have things very documented here although the pampero happens often approx 7 times by year (mostly summers), it does not always had that particular shape, that shape is the pampero in its purest form, it happen 1 or 2 times by year with strong dry winds, and always some time after very long time north winds, I mistake before, It comes from SW (not SE), the basic properties are always the same, short time period, kinda shockwave. But then there are different types, wet (which behind brings rain clouds so the cigar is just the front). The shape that I show, happen most often (not a rule) after the pampero leaves lands and is above water, like when you are in the middle of the river ("rio de la plata" estuary with more than 200 km width) I took a time ago video with that shape in land. I need to find it..

If you find the time, yeah it would be nice. This would require less cpu to the calculations? I still dint test the cpu consumption with a big craft, so I am just answering.

Or just wait until is more night and use a normal ND but blocking half of the shoot, or that light is from the city? Also longer exposes can notice very quick the earth rotation without tracking.. You did a great photo, so I cant said it will look better than that. Because 300mm still is not enoght to see the sphere shape, not sure with digital zoom and tracking. I would love to have some ND filters, but they are quite expensives, so to normal photos I just try to remplace them with a good HDR software. Thanks for those post, helps to understand the shadows.. I guess now would be a good launch windows for Venus.

But in reality will be the opposite.. In fact.. solar panels are designed to absorb light.. not reflected. Of course if you are in the right angle of sun reflection, you will see that part of the solar panels more yellow.. but you would not see reflection from earth, or bodies close to the solar panel.

How cold is the water there? Here in Buenos Aires, there is something call Pampero which happen many times by year, is a strong wind from SE that last only 5 min from 70kmh to 120kmh (40kts to 70kts), it is easy to recoignize by its cigar shape. image1, image2, those distracted or who does not know.. they get cought because it happens too fast, almost like a shock wave. Destroys sails or windows/doors in houses that are not close. Well that is not expected. What reynold number do you use for this? You calculate? First I thought you were wrong.. But trying to find real data on reynolds numbers for mars, I found 2 papers who talk about wind turbines, because they have sense due how low is the R.N. there. http://www.researchgate.net/publication/245526020_Low_Reynolds_Number_Vertical_Axis_Wind_Turbine_for_Mars http://spectrum.library.concordia.ca/36176/1/low_reynolds_number.doc It range from 5000 to 80000. I guess it depends on the shape from the vertical axis turbine. For spacesuit may be in the middle of that. 90 to 100 knots.. That is a F2 tornado, if it was that speed they would almost fly away, that is equal to 180kmh, 200kmh terminal velocity. Or maybe you want to said 90kmh to 100kmh. It seems the wind is not very strong so close to the ground. Also I dont think that a 400kmh wind is common on mars, it should be very strange.. I have the theory that the real problem is NASA, not the goverment. If is very unlikely to happen, I would vote for a NO. It will be like design a probe to visit earth for first time, but we make it hurricane proff.. What is the point? Other ships launch escape to orbit under the storm?

I dint take picture, but I saw them..

These scientist are not like a group of dudes who try to prove that events in the bible real existed for TV shows that are transmited in the holydays. There are errors when they make these math models to work in supercomputer, if all calculations and variables (size) are not well designed, they can drag big errors.. But they do this in many parts of the worlds, and they try to correct any mistake they did. But is very unlikely that all are wrong. Is the same that I said.. you just change the range of the adjectives But you did that question, so you are answering yourself with my same words? If you read the current paper you will understand.. Or just read it to see if you find an error. And in case you do, that is the way to contribute to science. Merge it with --> In a big study requested by the goverment, Finland found that is possible a 100% renewable convertion (mostly solar and wind) in 35 years, this takes into account all the energy that the country spent as transportation, etc. All this just increasing a 20% of the current energy budget, which is similar to the money that NASA will spent in the SLS-Orion program. Now we need to consider that Finland has an awfull level of anual irradiance. So if they can achieve it, also the rest of the world. They take into account all strategies, Including nuclear to the case, it was only a 2% to 3% difference with full solar and wind. They keep some thermal plants and they will need also fuel for vehicles, so they will capture co2 to make the fuels with electrical energy. They will use also hydrogen and different way of storage. http://www.lut.fi/web/en/news/-/asset_publisher/lGh4SAywhcPu/content/fully-renewable-energy-system-is-economically-viable-in-finland-in-2050 http://www.neocarbonenergy.fi/

Tilting floors in the centrifuge wheel : would it work?
AngelLestat replied to SomeGuy12's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Ah I never thought on the effect of walking with the rotation or against, so if we run is 1.5g, that is a hard training, if that is much, they can run against the rotation. But yeah, that is a flaw, not sure if is a way to fix that keeping all in manageable scales. I was more worried at the begining for the difference of acceleration between our head and feets, which is 0.05g, not sure if is enoght to be anoying. To be 1 rpm as fleshjeb said, the habitat needs to be 900 meters of diameter. -
For one side, you are saying that the wind is nothing and you can walk without problem. For the other side was a event who cause considerable caos and it was in the news. Ok, the windex with anenometer in such small sailboat seems weird, but if you had the committee boat I will shut my mouth. You have 2 ways of lift, one is due the airfoil shape, and the other is just by angle toward the wind, like a normal kite (there is not airfoil shape there, also if it would, does not help in nothing). 45 degrees is an impossible angle to keep. The wind force is not constant and you still need to walk, and as I said, that position just help you to not tilt over. Bending knees does not help for get equilibrium, something you really need. Ok, this is what I am interested, because yeah, it may add considerable errors in my calculations. That is just a function of CD with respect to Reynold, but I am not sure that is in Air.. I guess that graph is for water... reynolds and cd calculations is a nightmare, the only way to get a rought number is with special software and computer power, that is why the only good parameter is in a wind tunnel. The only way to prove partially if you are right and in what porcentage, it is knowing real data on terminal velocity (last 300 meters to keep the air density constant) and then correlate those numbers with your new Cd estimation in case is turbulant. Of course in mars the density and pressure is very low, so not sure the speed needed to become turbulent and how much it will change with our original value. Is not something that I prentend to investigate, but in case someone does, I will read it with pleasure. So in this moment I accept that my values may or may not be accurate. Ok, in this case we need to pretend that is not firmly fixed (nailed) to the ground. In my opinion it can happen, is less dense than a human and it does not do postures to counteract the wind. full grave does not work, because your foot sinks to reach horizontal position. Is more like a solid ground with dust (small stones or dirt of different size). You cant see, and the surface is kinda flat but uneven. How that helps you? But you always forget of the spacesuit estimation in the Cd, also the surface. ?? You think that 6 newtons of force will keep you in constant safe of not fall? Where are you walking? In a wind tunnel with a perfect feet cordination and a uniform surface? As I said to peadar.. Maybe I was wrong with the Cd due turbulant, but we can not know that, is too hard to calculate and we dont have that kind of mars data, not even for its surface. But the wind effect is considerable.. is not something to said "ohh how could the book being so wrong!!". I love when books or movies have accurate physsics effects or even try to accomplish those. So not sure why you want so badly that his is wrong with their assumptions.
