If you have ever read the book 2061: Odyssey Three, it discusses a melted Europa, and that's what I imagine Laythe to be like. So far all of Nova's posts support this "melted Europa" theory.

Neither of the space planes you mentioned are being developed by NASA. The X-37 is being designed by Boeing and the USAF, and the Dream Chaser by the Sierra Nevada corporation.

Thats the thing. He used DrakTec. Part gravity not only gives parts gravity, but also mass. That is why things go poof.

It's because they changed the way mass works in 0.16. More massive parts do more damage, even at incredibly low velocities. You can even see this in stock KSP. The orange tanks like to cause anything they touch explode. I hope they fix it, because this is an excellent (but dated) plugin.
