Bit of a stab in the dark here but would laser or (probably cheaper) microwave desorption work?

Planetary Annihilation: what are YOUR thoughts, KSP Community?
KSK replied to Souper's topic in The Lounge
Not voting because I haven't played the game but this thread isn't selling it to me. -
Life also did "To the Moon and Back" using the same shot as the Newsweek example in that collection. I have a framed print of the cover on my living room wall.

Not sure if this technically belongs here since a) it could be regarded as another snack and there's no actual recipe or foodstuff involved. However, rather like the junk, I offer SRCs as another possible source of inspiration for creating recipes from the ingredients we have. ---------- More of a den than an office, thought Sherfel as she took in the scuffed chairs, the low, shop-worn table, and the refrigerator under the desk. She stared at the picture of the Mün rising over Kerbin, a shiver running up her spine. Except for that. Surely that has to be the original, and dear Kerm, being the first ones to see that view out of your window…. “Take a seat folks, and help yourselves to whatever you want.†The table was laden with fruit, a full jug of very fresh-smelling coffee, a tray of hot rolls, and a plate of bite sized, mud coloured cubes. Sherfel stared at them curiously as she bit into a roll. Ornie noticed them too. “More of Derny’s experiments, Jeb?†Jeb helped himself to a roll. “Yep. SRCs, version…whatever number he’s up to now. Not quite as good as version six, but I’d still pack ‘em for the journey.†He gestured at James. “Go ahead - they taste a lot better than they look.†James took a cautious bite from his cube. A surprised look crossed his face, and he took another one from the plate. “Hey - these are pretty good - but what are they?†“Savoury Ration Cubes,†said Ornie. “Space rations. Derny figured that giving ‘em letters would make them sound more like proper kerbonaut supplies. Not to be confused with Sweet Ration Cubes, Spare Ration Cubes or Surprise Ration Cubes - Derny hasn’t really got the hang of acronyms yet.†“And never, ever to be confused with Spicy Ration Cubes,†added Jeb. He winced. “The snack that only Lucan could love - and he’s been destroying his palate with smoky sapwood for Kerm knows how long.†Ornie lifted his hands defensively. “Don’t blame me,†he said. “I just told him that food can taste a bit bland in zero-g. I didn’t know he’d take it as a personal challenge.†-

Feel free to file this post under 'missing the point entirely' or 'taking things far too seriously' but we have enough ingredients to make a pretty appealing modern day junk. Peas - can't argue with those. Good low residue vegetable. Brined meat. Forget the brine. Assuming kerbal physiology is approximately similar to ours, then subsisting on a thirst inducing foodstuff in a spacecraft seems unwise. More importantly it could muck up the kerbonaut's electrolyte balance. This is correctable but ask the Apollo 16 crew about the joys of electrolyte spiked drinks. So let's go with dried and rehydratable blapmip or latok. Rather than a festering slime, lets go with a nice blomph sauce. So we end up with pouches of rehydrated blapmip and pea stew made with blomph sauce. Maybe add some hydroponically grown firewhisker for added spice and that should tickle the taste buds of any kerbonaut! Served with small pre packed pieces of tabula, which are only added after the rest of the junk has been hydrated. -
Witchcraft. In case of emergency the crew can divert surplus witchcraft from the sensor arrays to gimbal the engines.

Just found this last night after reading the Ars Technica article. Looks incredible and something I plan to dip a toe into, assuming my specs can handle it. Longer term it's going to be interesting to see if all those buttons will translate into actual gameplay, over and above the frankly geekgasm startup sequence in Scott Manley's video. Even longer term, I'm not massively invested in the space combat side of things but if and when the planned exploration module (think DCS meets Elite: Dangerous), then that sounds like something I could spend many many hours in.

Fairly sure that I did but I'll give it another go tonight just to check. Thanks for the reply.

Sorry for the necro but I'm having problems with imgur embeds and just wanted to check whether this was a known problem or whether I'm just doing something wrong. Basically, my embedded albums don't display properly. Rather than displaying the image, I get a partial screenshot from my imgur page, complete with ad banner at the top and (apparently working) controls to upload images. Anyone got any ideas?

Parachute Failure, PLEASE HELP
KSK replied to justmeman117's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Image album for a fairly basic suborbital flight. Ship consists of a parachute, a capsule, two decouplers and two RT-10s. Doesn't need fins, will do a gravity turn (that is, tip over slowly and automatically without player input) up to a point and slows to chute deploying speeds at about 5,000m. Nope - Imgur still broken. Or else I'm doing something wrong. -
This. For capsule only re-entries, I find that setting my periapsis to 20-25km brings me in shallowly enough that I can deploy chutes at about 5,000m. Plenty of time. Not sure what a good periapsis would be for larger ships.

I haven't really built anything big enough to need the Vernors (normally I just add moar RCS blocks) so can't help you there. The radial attachment point is absolutely golden though, especially in early-mid career games or science games. Take one structural fuselage, add four symmetrically placed radial attachment points and presto - one reasonable facsimile of a Rockomax Hub, which otherwise only unlocks right at the end of the stock tech tree. Very useful for early space stations, chassis for launching multiple probes on the same booster or... well anything you'd use a Rockomax Hub for really.

Mazon Del - thank you for putting it better than I could have.

New to game- How do I obtain more contracts?
KSK replied to NoobSaibot's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Also, Mission Control is one of the first buildings I upgrade. At level 1 you can only accept two contracts at a time, at level 2 that increases to 7 (I think), which makes things much easier. -
I posted on that other thread something along the lines of 'hating a computer game is silly', so in fairness I should probably start by saying that loving one is just as silly. So... what do I really really like/enjoy/appreciate about KSP? In no particular order: 1. The whole concept of the game. Virtual space Lego - now with virtual spaceflight to go with it! 2. The Map screen. Turning tons of complicated maths into an easy (with some practice) to use visual tool for playing with orbital mechanics. 3. The game balance. Very subjective this one but personally I think KSP strikes the right balance between serious and fun. Yes I have to worry about delta-V and power systems and executing the right burn at the right time. No I don't have to shave that last 20g of weight off the upper left strut on my Mun lander, make sure the heaters on my RCS propellant lines are A-OK, or check that my delta-V budget is accurate down to the last 10m/s. And if I do decide I need more realism, then I have... 4. The modding community! I'm not a big mod user but I surely appreciate the ones I do use. 5. The Kerbals. It's odd but I suspect that a Human Space Program re-skin of KSP just wouldn't quite have the same appeal for me. They're great characters in their own right, I can project my own feelings and motivations on to them (and who's to say that that's not what kerbals think) and they never lose their wide eyed joy in what they're doing. Put the dumbest, most fearful kerbal in orbit around the Mun and his/her face lights up with that trademark 'holy... that's the Mun!' goofy grin. Yes. Yes it is - and even after 2+ years, it hasn't gotten old yet. 6. World-building. Another personal one and very much related to 5. KSP is the only game that's inspired me to get writing. It's almost the perfect blank canvas; a grab bag of names (for rocket parts, characters and companies) a couple of memes - and that's it. The rest is open territory for players to build their own versions of Kerbin and it's inhabitants. I've probably had as much fun (and spent as much time) writing about KSP as I have playing it.

Parachute Failure, PLEASE HELP
KSK replied to justmeman117's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Freedom 7: Shepard's mission was a 15-minute suborbital flight which reached an altitude of 101.2 nautical miles (187.5 kilometers) and traveled a downrange distance of 263.1 nautical miles. (487.3 kilometers) Liberty Bell 7: The flight lasted 15 minutes 30 seconds, reached an altitude of more than 102.8 nautical miles (190.4 km) and traveled 262.5 nautical miles (486.2 km) downrange, landing in the Atlantic ocean. No idea about the Soyuz but neither of the Mercury-Redstone flights were straight up and down. -
Oh crap.

As promised, some additions for the flora section, focusing on trees and weeds. Trees Leatherbark Sub-tropical, smooth barked, hardwood grown in the equatorial regions of Kerbin. Like many other tree species, the trunk as well as the upper branches support clusters of leaves; or in this case, fronds. Internally, the leaf clusters are fed via lateral offshoots of the main vascular bundles running through the trunk, which offshoots are responsible for the attractive dappled finish of leatherbark timber. Sweetleaf Another sub-tropical species, not dissimilar to the Terran palm tree but with curled, serpentine, aromatic leaves. Until quite recently, conventional wisdom held that leatherbark and sweetleaf trees shouldn’t be planted in close proximity, due to the very different soil biota needed to support each species. This view has only been conclusively overturned within the last three kerbal generations. Bottlebrush Evergreen species found in the northern reaches of Kerbin, bottlebrush trees have a tall straight trunks, the upper fifth of which supports a profusion of slender, needle bearing side branches. Bottlebrush trees provide excellent straight grained timber that is exported throughout Kerbin. Weeds Star poppies Large red, five petaled flowers, tend to grow in clumps Rustbells Small, orange trumpet shaped flowers, somewhat like a Terran daffodil but without the ring of petals. Cornshakes Grow in dense patches, particularly in forested areas. Small sky blue flowers that are actually rather attractive but their extensive shallow but tough root networks will foul most agricultural implements. Yellowjackets. Symbiotes of the cornshakes that tap into their root networks. Exude a sweet, almost sickly scent that is particularly attractive to many species of insect. Hookwort. Aggressive climbing creeper that, given the chance, will colonise and choke off most other plant species. Knotweed Stringy green, low growing fibrous mats Damsonwire Related to knotweed but with tougher, thinner and more dispersed fibres. Actively cultivated in some parts of Kerbin as a pleasant tasting and durable, natural dental floss. Kerblets fingers Edible weed, somewhat akin to Terran shepherd’s purse but with segmented tubular seed pods rather than heart shaped. Gingergrass Long, flat bladed grass species that is prized for it’s flavour but cursed for its tenacity and speed of growth. Broadweed Slender green stems supporting whorls of pentagonal leaves at regular intervals and topped with a cluster of small white flowers.

Oh man. I don't throw this word around too much but that is beautiful.
-
Formally off-topic since it clearly has been built within somebody's limits but it might be too much for my computer. But if I could, I would definitely build two of these and mount them on a common hub for that '2001' aesthetic. http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/126672-Ultra-launch

What do I hate about KSP? Nothing. Certainly nothing worth putting in capital letters. There are things I would change, there are things it would be nice to have fixed. But I refuse to get worked up enough about a video game to hate it.

Still cant get past the to the mun tutorial part 1
KSK replied to modybird's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
For that one, you just need to follow Gene's instructions. Your orbit (blue line) doesn't have a periapsis - or rather it does but unfortunately it's under the surface of the Mun. This isn't good. So do like the good Flight Director says, set up a maneuver node (click anywhere on the blue line in front of your ship) and experiment with dragging the blue handles until your orbit doesn't intersect the Mun any more. -
Yup. The Lunar Module Descent Engine was the first example I think. The Space Shuttle Main Engines were throttleable too - listen to a recording of the last Challenger flight sometime - before the explosion you'll hear the 'Go for throttle up' command. In fact (according to Wikipedia) most rocket engines can be "throttled by a factor of two without much difficulty." Deep throttling is another matter and KSP style 0-100% throttling is (so far as I know) impossible.
