  1. I believe the argument for beginning your gravity turn after the 10km mark is that the atmospheric drag is much lower, meaning that there's less chance of ripping a less-than-perfectly stable rocket design apart if you overcook it a few degrees. You also don't want to be trying any delicate manouevres until your solid boosters have flamed out and been safely jettisoned.
  2. You'd think the developers of a game about building rockets, with all their implied phallic symbolism, would have a more relaxed approach to this sort of thing really.
  3. Note that there's a difference between offering the story as a download in formats most ebook readers can handle and actually charging for it. Once the story's finished, and if enough people are interested, I don't mind donating a few MB of my Dropbox account to the cause.
  4. So... Who wants to start a TV Tropes page for "It's Hardly Rocket Science"?
  5. Pre-0.21: "The hell with RCS, it just makes the whole ship wobble like mad when ASAS is on. I'll just rely on pod gyros." Ten minutes later: "Come on you little bugger, turn! We're going to miss the burn window!" Apogee ended up somewhere close to the Mun, perigee was down to about 50km. Not even MechJeb could salvage that. Remember, people, don't try and steer Duna probes with nothing but a Stayputnik probe core!
  6. Nice work overall, but it loses a couple of points for using footage from the live-action Thunderbirds movie.
  7. How's that for timing? Anyway, nice bit of worldbuilding, and an interesting development for the future.
  8. This is going to be a little on the vague side, but... Well, would you mind reading "The Next Frontier" and designing a unit patch for the crew of Starfarer 1, the Kerbin Space Agency's first ever manned FTL vessel? I don't have any particular preference for how it looks, do whatever you think looks cool.
  9. Just found this, and it's really cool. How do you feel about adding some stall warning sounds to go with FAR?
  10. You'll find that method less effective if you have a structural failure somewhere and lose throttle control.
  11. So far as I know, the overheating issue only happens when you attach a Mainsail -or presumably any other 2.5m engine- directly to the bottom of a Jumbo-64; they've got some kind of issue with getting rid of waste heat. Using one bof those multi-way adapters should prevent that, I think, but I can't say I've ever tried it myself.
  12. Never had much of a problem with that myself; when I use SRBs I try to make sure they're depleted well before it's time for the gravity turn, which is where the trouble usually begins in my experience.
  13. There sure is. And Separatrons weigh so little that they're not really noticeable on a Mun or Minmus flight, as well as making useful emergency de-orbit motors. I'll keep that in mind for when I start planning manned missions beyond the moons, though.
  14. Yep. Got into the habit before 0.21 was released, because I kind of got attached to Jeb. I don't use the escape tower, though; I find a brace of Separatrons are just as good and look a bit better. For spaceplanes, or rather vaguely aeroplane-shaped deathtraps that will someday become spaceplanes, I use the EVA parachutes mod and the eject module.
  15. Not everyone is in a position to download a whole DVD's worth of data on a regular basis. My data plan used to top out at 10GB a month, and if I go over that I pay £1 a gigabyte; it's actually cheaper to just buy the DVD-ROM on Amazon or eBay and have it shipped.
  16. Hmmm. Is this the first hint of a real story arc in which Jeb embarks on a series of wacky hijinx to get his job back?
  17. How in the name of bloody hell is one supposed to play KSP with nothing but an Xbox controller?
  18. When I found out you could rotate parts in the VAB. (I only have one screen and KSP doesn't like me alt-tabbing into Firefox.)
  19. It depends on the weight of whatever you're trying to land, but I suggest waiting until terminal velocity. That's with FAR installed, though; I couldn't honestly tell you what it's like with vanilla drag values, it's that long since I played stock.
  20. You'll get better results from asking nicely and being patient, mate. And you could always try "The Next Frontier" while you wait, it's in sort of the same universe thirty-odd years later.
  21. They might give her a more practical hairstyle and a bit less pink on the spacesuit...
  22. Hmmm... How much radiated heat does Jool put out?
  23. Now that's some impressive work. Nice lander design too, if a little over-engineered.
