You know what else would be amazing? A small backpack-looking part that could be inflated into a single-kerbal tent. Something that could be used with KAS: stored on a bin, carried by a kerbal on EVA, dropped and inflated on the ground. It would be a great asset for kerbals on long plane or rover trips.

LLL - Lack Luster Labs - Development Thread
Parkaboy replied to Lack's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
You mean this HL bay? I wouldn't quite call that a fit. Sure, I could use an adapter, but it would look really ugly, and I would be better off using the B9 cockpits, which are the only ones that fit well with the B9 bays. The S2 bay is a better fit, but it also looks way better with the S2 cockpit it was designed to fit into. So I guess what everyone here seems to be saying is that I shouldn't use the SXT cockpit, and should just stick with B9. Anyway, I'm sorry I stopped by to drop a suggestion. I already derailed the thread enough. Please ignore whatever I've said. -
LLL - Lack Luster Labs - Development Thread
Parkaboy replied to Lack's topic in KSP1 Mod Development
I don't have memory issues, but I'm no longer using B9. The parts aren't stocklike enough for my tastes, and I'm trying to keep the mods I'm using as stock as possible. And none of the B9 payloads fits a stock 2,5m part. There are a couple of older mods with cylindrical cargo bays, but they don't look very good. Of course, I can just use the newly released KSO, but I like to design my own shuttles with a bit more freedom. -

Hi, there! I'm just dropping by to say I'm loving the SXT pack, especially the large cockpit. It works great as a shuttle cabin, a lot better than the stock MkIII one. You can see in this shuttle: The only thing missing now for my shuttle program is a good 2,5m payload bay. I'm improvising with Procedural Fairings, but the downside of that is that I have to jettison the cover and land with the bay open. Any chance of a stocklike cargo bay for the pack? -
Sam, you're an IVA artist! Great internals such as this is what's missing on most mods. I'd love to see a big living compartment, sized like the lab, but with an IVA designed like living space for bases. Something designed to sit on its size on the ground, unlike the Hitchhiker. With your IVA design skills, I think it would be a part in high demand.

To be honest, the idea of a "hardcore" player is silly, and even harmful to video game as a medium. A good game usually can be played both casually and in a "hardcore" manner by different people and even by the same person. There's no need to call oneself a "hardcore" player other than to look down on people that don't play the game the same way one does. Just let people enjoy the game the way they want to, and don't be surprised by the fact that the developers are trying to reach an audience as large as possible. So far, I don't think they did anything to compromise the game: it's still fun and accessible, without being dumbed down.
-
I'm at 507, though I think Steam may be playing the game without me sometimes. I've noticed the count climbing lately when I wasn't playing it.

Possibly the worst decision the devs have ever made so far.
Parkaboy replied to BeefTenderloin's topic in The Lounge
It's just a font, but this is also just a thread on just a forum about just a game. Let people be riled up about it if they feel like it, as long as it's harmless. Edit: And also, I just had a beer, so don't take me too seriously. -
One of the first things I've noticed while playing KSP was that it had the same track as this game: http://jayisgames.com/games/small-worlds/

Arcadia - Permanent Kerbrazilian Minmus Base (pic heavy)
Parkaboy replied to Parkaboy's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Arcadia - Part 2 "Hi, Mom! I know I promised to write soon, but we have been very busy during the first couple of days. Don't worry, I'm fine. We're all fine here: me, Marcos and the near mute girl, Viridiana. I told you I was going to send you pictures, so I'm sending a few annexed to this e-mail. I'm afraid there isn't much to see here. It's not a vacation, after all, so all the pictures I have are all about the mission." "I undocked the Porreta I, which is the name of our lander, from the rocket that borught it to Minmus. The rocket was just a big tank with a detachable thruster. We got rid of the atomic engine, and voilá: we had an orbital fuel reserve, which the guys at the space center decided to call "Minmus Station One". I know, they don't have much imagination." "A few minutes later we were landing on the chosen spot, right next to the probe. It was a very easy landing, a lot nicer than landing on the Mun. Going out and stepping in a new world... I thought I would never have that sensation again. It's a real rush! I can't believed Juca passed this opportunity for a girl. Good for me, now I'm not only the first kerbrazilian in space and on the Mun, but also the first one to step in Minmus." "We didn't have time to enjoy the low gravity though. There was work to be done. After my two colleagues enjoyed their first visit to the surface I got back to the lander, where I remotely controlled one of the modules in orbit. It was time to land the extraction module. Again the landing was easy, and Marcos and I went check if nothing was damaged." "That's me checking the controls of the Cambito, the little rover that came with the extraction module. That little thing is a marvel. Omni wheels allow it to move on any direction, and the telescopic suspension makes it possible to dock the modules together. Soon we were joining the extraction module to the probe, and we had the beginnings of our base." "But we still had to bring down the living quarters. We couldn't sleep on a kethane drill, after all. Back at the remote controls in the lander, I undocked the robot lander that came with the extraction module and it took off back to orbit. Since the habitation modules, which were waiting above us, didn't have any thrusters, we needed the little ship to land them." "And landing them was a challenge. Not only I had to bring two wobbly modules down, but also I had to drop them delicately on the ground separately, before landing the lander. No problem, though. You know how much I like challenges." "Then Marcos and I were back on board the rover, speeding towards the modules. Another cool thing about the Cambito is the RCS propulsion system, which allows us to gain and loose speed more rapidly on the low gravity of Minmus. Soon we were bringing the greenhouse module back to the base. Viridiana lost no time, and went to take care of her little plants." "And in no time we were docking the habitation module in the Base. And so was ready the first kerbrazilian base on Minmus. Well, not ready, but inhabitable. Arcadia still had much to grow. I promise to write you again soon, Mom. Until then, take care. Greetings from Minmus, -Severino" -

That's from Lack Luster Labs. -
I tend to follow some similar rules, and found out they make the game a lot more fun, especially since I keep track of all my missions through mission reports in a blog. Here are my rules: 1. Keep things small. I only launch payloads that are moderately aerodynamic or that fit inside fairings. 2. No debris in orbit. I try to deorbit all my spent stages, and also use parachutes in all of them, so they could be, in theory, recovered. 3. Keep a save for tests. I use hyper edit on this save to perfect all my ships before trying them on the "official" save, where I'm not allowed to abuse the quicksaving. 4. Launch ships that can be used in several missions. The kethane mod helps me refuel my ships and keep them in service a lot longer. 5. Don't mistreat the Kerbals. I have a time limit for kerbals in zero g, try to leave them with more living space during long missions, and use the Ioncross mod for life support. 6. Aerobraking is only allowed if the ship has a heatshield.

I just fly it the way Scott Manley taught me, making sure to get as much horizontal speed as possible before turning on the rocket engines. I aim for a 75 Km orbit, which leaves me with just enough delta v to dock with my station. I did it a couple of times now - the first time I had enough fuel to deorbit; the second time I borrowed some oxidizer from the station. Both times I pretty much glided to land.

Oh, well... That's what videogames will do to your brain! Anyway, everything I said is still valid. Thanks a lot for the inspiration! -
Loved this design so much I had to copy it. Here's the Doninha I! Like I told you, it's bigger than the FatSparrow and has different engines. But it works! I'm still perfecting it, though. It flew great on the test flight, but I changed the fuel lines for the first "official" mission and ended up with a small unbalance that cost me some delta V. I had to steal a bit of oxidizer from the space station reserve to make up for it. I still have to find the ideal fuel line configuration, I guess.

The FatSparrow. I wanted a ship that could take passengers to and from my space station, and the one I had - The Uirapuru I - was still too heavy and had less lift. The Doninha I has 20 tons against its predecessor's 28 tons, Is much smaller (although a bit bigger than the FatSparrow), it doesn't need the whole strip to take off and can reenter and land with the engines off. -

Well, I guess you saved me from playing god, because I loved your design. I've dissected it and made a new ship from scratch copying the wing and tank configuration. It has larger rocket tanks, and switched engines: two jet engines on the sides (a different, more efficient stock model), and a KWRocketry rocket engine, with higher thrust and ISP than the one you used. It can reach orbit with enough delta V to let me rendezvous and dock with my station, then come back and land. I shall name it "Doninha I" in your honor (it means weasel in portuguese). -

Thanks! I've been struggling with my own SSTOs, trying to make a small, economic and low part count spaceplane that could take 3 kerbals to my space station in Kerbin orbit. So far I got this: It flies well, but I had to tweak a bit the ISP of the rockets so they'd be able to get it into orbit, and I feel like a cheater. -

Roughly half, I think. I'm glad I added docking ports of all sizes to them, it would be a shame to waste so much fuel. -

I really want the craft file for this. Could you share? Please? -
Arcadia - Part 1 - Mission Control to Porreta I. This is Glauber speaking. Severino, do you copy? - Copy, Glauber. Sitting nice and cozy here on top of all these tons of explosive rocket fuel. Are we clear to take off? - Just a few more seconds, Severino. I was told to go over a few details about the mission with you again. I understand you were a last minute addition to the crew, right? - Yep. My little brother was the designated pilot, but he fell with this girl and now isn't available to comit with a long duration mission such as this. - And is was very nice of you to volunteer to take his place. - What can I say? I was getting restless down here. Space is my one true love, after all. - Very poetic. Are you getting along with you colleagues? - Sure, we're already best buds. Right, Marcos? Right, Viridiana? - Um, okay. - ... - Ain't Viridiana such a talkative girl? I know she's going to spend most of her time in the new base taking care of plants, so the greenhouse is sure to be full of loud conversation. - Don't tease her, Severino. We have your clearance for launch. We go over the details later. You may start the countdown now. - Woohooo! Low Kerbin orbit achieved! The Porreta I is ready for transminmunar injection! - Well done, Severino! While we wait fpr the transfer window, let's go over a few more bits. Not only you'll be on charge of getting this bunch safely to Minmus, but you will also be landing by remote control the equipment we have already sent to orbit the little moon. Are you familiar with this equipment? - Sure, there's a probe on the surface that's going to be part of the base, right? - Yes, that would be Turquoise I, which we sent a couple of weeks ago. I'm sending you pictures of that mission. - Nice! That is one huge-ass rocket, I must say. - Yes, that's the Hecatomb I model. We launched three of those to get all the equipment you'll need in orbit. This was the first one. Notice the probe is a lot larger and heavier than would be needed for a simple landing on Minmu's small gravity. That's beacuse it carries a kethane-fueled power generator and a fuel reserve. You'll need that fuel, if the whole system we rigged to extract kethane from that deposit under the surface fails. - I also noticed they landed the ship too. What was that? - We decided to leave the nuclear ship a few kilometers away from the base site, as another fuel reserve, and maybe even as an emergency return vehicle. The ship was very efficient and we had lots of fuel to spare, and we're not taking chances with this mission. - Other than having me as a pilot, you mean. - That's the rest of the equipment, which we sent a few days ago. In the first pic you have the Extraction Module, with the robot lander and the manned rover. The second one shows the Habitation Module and the Hydroponics Module. Both were sent by the same rocket model as the Turquoise I probe. We plan on leaving those nuclear stages in orbit, as another fuel reserve. We'll need that fuel until we get the kethane refinery running. - Neat. I hear that little rover is quite a marvel. - Yes, we're quite happy with the project. A very useful little vehicle. You won't be able to put the base together without it. Okay Severino, your transfer window is coming up. I'll let you do your work. - Thanks, Glauber. Minmus, here we go!

Both the ship and the spaceplane are neat designs. I'm curious to see how it will look finished.
