  1. OK thanks for the name update there colmo. UmbralRaptor, that is a teeny tiny bird, I see how you used the lighter wings to good effect and definitely deserve the Minimalist record title, sorry Oggula! Thanks for the screenies, which show the craft did land close to KSC but did not make it to KSC terrain, but well piloted anyway, just landing is an achievement with such a minimal craft. Good luck with the Albatruss trials Sean Mirrsen. Thanks for the interim report & screenies. Congratulations Salda 007 on your success with Flying Pig-3 and challenge report, mission accomplished. Also thanks for telling the story of your crew recovery, duly noted as a special citation on the guest list in recognition of services to Kerbalkind.
  2. A manoevurable looking spaceplane there colmo and congratulations on bringing her back in one piece, consider yourself on the official guest list and thanks for all the screenies linked. Like shhhilent 1 said, reentry is about slowing down so the obit line in map intersects with the drop zone, plus a bit extra to allow for drag and also for how Kerbin rotates while you are getting there. Thanks for the screenies Phoenix Aerospace, amazing that you got to orbit with RCS but as you say the RCS tanks at least look like mods and not sure about the nozzles so I have put you down for a humorous citation as a gatecrasher, hope you are amused
  3. Good luck with your next attempt then Sean Mirrsen. I noticed you are already on the guest list due to the previous mission you did. Thanks for posting the videos _Aramcheck_, well done on your successful flight with your new design, consider yourself on the guest list. I hope I got the craft name right, hard to read the vid, FFu3 ? Saaur and Cascade Aerospace, that is a neat little ship, grats on completing the mission successfully and efficiently, thanks for your illustrated report. Your invitation to the Dog & Booster backstage event is confirmed. Inspired by some of the elegant craft on display in this thread and with an eye on the Orion III spaceplane from 2001 A Space Odyssey, I have been working on another design and taking it for a spin to make rendezvous with a space station. Screenies below. I am thinking about making a movie but my arm still hasnt recovered from the RSI I encurred on my last editing spree !
  4. togfox IMHO - Its to do with lift relative to center of mass in the Unity simulation. Weight distribution changes as fuel is used, initially the center of mass is nearer the middle and engines are typically at the back. At the end of the flight the center of mass moves back towards the engines, if you have too much lift too far forwards at this point in the flight the craft flips back to front. So you need to keep the wings over the engines, but then you need a little extra lift / attitude control in front of the center of mass on lift off to get the nose up because the wings are behind the center of mass at that point, so the mass tends to change the attitude of the craft so it points towards the ground. You can make craft with engines and wings in the middle and they dont tend to need canards if they have a good tail plane for attitude control. IMHO Aramcheck, grats & cool, will wait till I have seen the vid so I can see which accomplishments to include.
  5. Thanks for your mission reports _Aramcheck_ and Sean Mirrsen, both very interesting craft but by your own testimonies the challenge has not been strictly completed in each case, so I put you both on the gate crashers list to acknowledge your worthwhile contributions to the thread. Will adjust when you confirm a completed challenge flight as was the case for G Addict. Grats on getting your craft to fly G addict and welcome to the official guest list (roll of honour). Did you get my 'blow out in damper three' reference in the now removed gate crasher comment? That was pilot chat from the title sequence to 'The 6 Million Dollar Man'. FYI Thanks geb, nice ship, worthy Mün landing and return. You are on the guest list and have earned an ***Astrokerbal Distinction***.
  6. Mystery solved! Another breakthrough for Kerbal cosmology.
  7. In case anybody cares !? In case anybody cares !?!? Why Oggula, you have just won the Minimalist record and have become the envy of the civilised world... screenies of daring do would be nice illectro, thanks for linking your excellent mission video, not only do you have a successful spaceplane but you earned the prestigious ***Astrokerbal Distinction***, highest of the K Prize honours, to go with your back stage pass to the Dog & Booster post-performance party. Great looking space machine there G Addict, shame it crashed, have another go, next time consider pressing F5 when you make orbit and F9 if you crash !
  8. OK so can I showcase my vids here then ? There are five so far. Here they are in reverse chronology, newest at the top. Three with music. Two shots from Kerbin to the Mün and back by the same rocket. Launching a big stock space station into orbit around the Mün. Kerbol star orbit and back to Kerbin with a little ship. Two without music. Capsule retrieval from Münar orbit. Early days mission to the Mün and back to Kerbin.
  9. Do you mean the second launch? I did some R&D to find the smallest possible single shot & return vehicle and then built the first big launcher around that. The key is not having ASAS on the final lander stage, so it is very light and has a lot of DV in its half tank. It is also fairly easy to fly because the capsule SAS damps its motion well enough as it is so small. The R&D allowed me to practice flying it and decide on optimum deceleration burn timing for the lander etc.
  10. Good luck finding KSC2 Aerzee. Congratulations on completing the mission and thanks for your mission report, you are now on the official guest list! Yes dogon11, afaik chutes won\'t detach until you land and can be repacked ... !
  11. Well done Aerzee, nice looking ship with a unique and yet classic look and clearly it works too. Can you fly the mission and land it in one piece? Until then you are on the gate crasher\'s list on a technicality, since you kinda made it but something fell off the spaceplane. (I disqualified my own missions for the same reason.) FYI [esc] key permits pause.
  12. Well played Caldvan, tjoreilly and Dobrodav. Thanks for your illustrated reports of your stunning feats of engineering and challenge achievements, some intriguing ideas put into action there. Missions accomplished, welcome to the party!
  13. I took a stab at this and my best effort so far is below. Sorry to say the Kerbals didnt survive the landing
  14. Sean, very purposeful looking machine you have there! Thanks for your interesting report and explanation. Congratulations on your safe landing and inclusion on the guest list
  15. It is possible, I have just flown this stock craft all the way round Kerbin. It is designed to fly at 10km at low throttle, see screenies. Unfortunately I broke the altitude rule at one point as I left it unattended and the inclination was locked by ASAS so it hit 16000m but nevertheless I landed it twice and saved and took off again and brought it home to KSC today. I am keeping it beside the runway as a trophy so I dont have an end flight for it either (and F3 only loads info for flight since last reload) but here are some screenies for fun... a) is some time after take off before first save. is coming in for the second landing. c) is map view some time after second take off, approaching KSC continent. d) is crossing the mountains behind KSC and making final approach (I went round again twice). e) is landed and stopped on the runway. f) is space center report showing MET 9:35:12.
  16. Very bad luck there khyron42 and baneblade. I disallowed my own minimalist attempt when landings proved unexpectedly destructive, so much as I would like to add you to the guest list I am afraid there is a quibble regarding rule #1 that the craft does not lose parts before the flight ends (point at which you can go to the space center or quicksave) which includes bits dropping off by accident and or the complete disintegration of the entire craft... ! (lol) Sorry Well done Parabellum, you made it! Interesting designs all around btw. Oggula if you wanted to enter your flight and give us a few interesting screenies to show it satisfied the objectives you would not only win your place on the guest list but would deserve to share a joint minimalist record holder title with mager42 imho since your piloting and his design would then both be proven worthy... if you can land it... ^.^
  17. When you light a spaceplane rocket you usually have to zero trim as the very next action ( alt + X ) because the sudden increase in speed makes the trim up much more potent and the plane should now be powerful enough to just go in a straight line. Steering with delicate dabs on fine setting (capslock toggles this and the pitch and yaw markers turn blue to indicate it is active) can help avoid oversteer. If trim is zero and you are still pitching up then you either have excess drag, maybe on top or possibly a bit on top and more at the front causing any deviation to be magnified, (or you could have wings too far forwards or a wing part at an angle or have the rockets below the center of mass.) In your case imho the canards are quite far forwards and you need to try to bring them back as far as you can. If the plane wont lift off without them forwards then you can try bringing the main wings forwards a bit and move the canards back as far as you can. There is a time between ignition and 30,000m altitude where the ships can be very tricky to steer, but after 40km it is all rocket and you can begin to ignore aerodynamics entirely. However I think the wings on yours are above the line of rocket thrust and in rocket mode their mass and that of the fins will tend to tip your ship upwards very slightly in rocket mode but you should be able to counter that with manual control. If you can fit an ASAS on there it will help a lot. I find its very tricky to fly in KSP without an ASAS. imho
  18. Me too. To explain the middle picture, its a city of Kerbals and the factory buildings on the right are VABs while the entertainment building is a cinema with a billboard and the habitation building is a small housing development with manicured vegetation, a bit like an armed forces / NASA housing complex... The town hall is of course mission control
  19. OK thanks for checking Mager42. My adding up was out. You still have the minimalist title...
  20. IMHO Unity has enough trouble with the solar orbit and the Kraken and sufficient CPUs have trouble with running KSP at all already that dreams of n-body have to be considered unrealistic and impractical pie in the sky. My solution to the grass always being greener on the other side of the hill thing is to be happy with what we have, which is quite a lot more than we had two years ago which was precisely nada. Also as an afterthought, I wonder if Lagrange points 1 + 2 could be modelled as small SOIs with their own conditions which permit Mun synchronous orbit of Kerbin. PS suggestions normally belong in the development forum
  21. By a pinky swear this went round kerbin but I will get a screeny of the orbit before I try to claim minimalist record. I believe it tots up at 10.64 (including gear) 8.64 if gear excluded...
  22. mmm I recognise the feeling, I have been trying to make a small space plane that will fly without ASAS and for the first time ever with KSP I am stumped, every design bar one yaws all over the place and the one design which doesnt yaw due to having trailing fins either flips over or the undercarriage collapses when it lands due to the craft randomly turning sideways. As far as bug reporting goes its hard to see the wood for the trees but I think the very high cockpit drag numbers might be part of the problem. EDIT I was confusing myself here sorry. ASAS helps a lot and angling the wings up a tad sometimes helps and moving them relative to the center of mass, sometimes it just makes it worse though. Its really hard to diagnose problems.
  23. Awesome or should I say sawsome sauce there pushingrobot, you have taken this challenge by the horns and completed every single additional kudos objective bar one... obviously you didnt get the minimalist record this time
  24. personally I make a quicksave (F5) before reentry so I can try again (F9) and again and again...! Some designs never fly right but others do once you have got to know them. There is one I am trying to land at the moment and I can land it ok but it always bounces and flips the front end up knocks the engine off the back... I must have tried a dozen times trying to understand the problem, oh well back to the drawing board!
