The findings I've made after flying around using two aircraft, one small and one medium-sized, is that at low to medium speeds, they do mimic (to a limited extent, but still present) certain aerodynamic behaviors such as stall, and spins. Since every wing surface generates lift, if that surface encounters a moment wherein there is no longer any "wind" passing underneath it (say, via steep angle of attack), that surface will stall. At the moment of stall, no matter what attitude your aircraft is in, it will start to descend, which can be deadly at low altitudes and if your aircraft is heavy. With lighter aircraft however, it's enjoyable to exploit this to enable your craft to perform a lot of nice aerobatic maneuvers. So I made a video to show you how easy it is to do stunts around KSC now. Mind you that I'm using joysticks. Furthermore, the aerodynamic effects (such as approaching stall moments) do have audible and visible effects. For instance, when doing a very hard "break turn" (this is pulling on the stick while banked left or right), you would hear a low-wooshing sound, and if you have camera shake effects turned on, there is a marked increase in the camera shake. While this is really cool, I still wish a STALL HORN or BEEP, or Bitching Betty (WARNING! STALL!) would sound hehe. It also turns out that since some engines' gimballing have been increased, the standard Jet Engine is now effectively one capable of Thrust Vectoring like the Su-37 and the F-22 Raptor, and aircraft at low speeds which uses this engine can perform maneuvers that the real world aircraft can do as well. Some might say that these might not have any practical value anyway, but as a flight simulation enthusiast, I really like the new aerodynamic effects in stock KSP now (I was never a FAR user, because I play mostly stock).

Had fun finally doing a winged SSTO on my third attempt. This is winged SSTO from KSC to Orbit then back to KSC 1. This is my XB-81, taking off from KSC 2. Taking off from KSC 3. Climbing to 15,000 meters (no screenshot because I was busy--this is the critical part, RAPIERS are set to manual, not auto and you have to monitor it, while flying at 16,000 ft. don't let it flame out but keep building speed until over 800 m/s, and THEN change mode to Closed Cycle and climb to orbit. Also, pay attention to temp--do not let craft overheat. 4. Climb to orbit using Closed Cycle mode (intakes closed and using oxidizer). 5. Orbit Achieved. Now time to go back to KSC. 6. The key component to prevent exploding craft while on re-entry (kind of a cheat actually)--FOUR airbrakes, prevents your craft from overheating. 7. Having reached down to 25,000 m, and at 1,000+ m/s, I now prepare to fire RAPIERS (now back to AirBreathing Mode and ALL intakes open) 8. Long "glide" down to KSC (minor heating but not critical) from 25,000 m to around 6,000 m 9. At 4,000, runway in sight, time to align with runway. Gear down and locked. 10. Aligned 11. In-cockpit view, aligned with runway 12. Prep for touchdown 13. Landing It's a cinch.

First SSTO spaceplane made, first attempt nearly made orbit = happy. First Munar mission (Apollo-style), first attempt, landed on Mun and returned to Kerbin = happy. So far, very very pleased

After the update, I hastily made one of my own design, flew it (surprised by the massive thrust of the RAPIERS!) and it barely got into orbit (agee = 90 km, pgee = 45 km), which is actually GOOD! This is the FIRST TRY, and I fly with a Logitech X3D joystick with a Logitech Attack 3 as a secondary stick (acting as throttle quadrant plus access to buttons) I always thought my SSTO designs were so UBER, I have no trouble getting to orbit and getting back to KSC, and now it's more realistic given the new aerodynamic behavior, drag and heating. And I know exactly how to fix my design so I can get to orbit and land back again. SSTO's were too easy in 0.90.0 (at least for me), so now I finally feel that winged SSTO is a true challenge. Loving it.

RCS Joystick, where to buy parts?

Your best off the shelf solution (not DIY) for full axis 6-Degrees-of-Freedom (6DoF) control (including translational) is this: http://www.3dconnexion.com/index.php?id=26&redirect2=www.3dconnexion.com -
Anybody else a bit underwhelmed by 1.0?
rodion_herrera replied to Marclev's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Exactly how I feel. I can now transition between my flight simulation games and KSP easier. -
I just finished my first Sandbox Munar Apollo-style mission in v1.0. Forgot to take a snapshot at launch. The first stage was composed of that 3200 4-cluster with two side boosters (2-cluster). Second stage fires. You see the new fairings in place, covering and protecting the part of the stack where my LM is located. Halfway through second stage. Fairing jettison. (forgot to take snapshots of arrival at Munar orbit, sorry) LM separating from the 3rd stage which also acted as a braking stage LM about to land, nice dust effects Jeb doing a clambering demo Meanwhile, back at the CSM, Bill checks up on the new fuel cells Jeb and Bob celebrating their first Mun landing with KSP v1.0 Great shot of LM ascent stage leaving the LM descent stage and munar surface Rendezvous and docking with the CSM Nearly there. I do docking purely "by eye" Trans-Kerbin burn Trans-Kerbin coast Re-entry heating Heat shield in action Chutes deployed Splashdown My main complaint is a drastic reduction of FPS (which some said might be because v1.0 reset my GFX settings, so will look into that), but as you can see, this low FPS didn't hinder my mission. All-in-all, as you can probably see, I am enjoying KSP v1.0

Anybody else a bit underwhelmed by 1.0?
rodion_herrera replied to Marclev's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Seriously? Do you really fly aircraft or SSTO's in KSP? Esp. in v1.0? I fly with a joystick, and frankly, it responds more like a REAL aircraft now, when flown with a joystick and rudder/throttle controls. It's not "easier" in the sense that everything is ho hum--there are things that make flying more complicated now, such as watching altitude and airspeed because the aircraft/SSTO behaves differently in different altitudes and speeds. If you think aerodynamics made aircraft and SSTO's "EASIER" now, I challenge you to get to orbit with a winged SSTO, and I tell you it's much more difficult now (which actually makes it a little more realistic). -
My girlfriend gave me three "free" days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) hahaha...she understands KSP is about to go v1.0. I feel so lucky to have her

KSP Updating And Your Saves, a Public Service Announcement.
rodion_herrera replied to sal_vager's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Same here. I go by Richard Feynman's saying "What I cannot create, I do not understand." I want to build and rebuild everything I've done, if only to truly understand why a design worked. If I say "Damn, I erased my build! Now I can't have the same performance I had before!" Then it only shows that I didn't understand why that spaceplane flew the beautiful way it did. -
I'm +8 GMT, so I'm guessing I'll probably be fast asleep while KSP Steam updates...but I'll see it in the morning so...

A revised version, with more apt music! It's the FINAL COUNTDOWN to V1.0!!!
-
Thanks Kyle, I had an earlier version that I posted on Reddit that used the original theme music, but I thought this music was TONS better!
-
Matt is pretty excited. He's agonizing on the FINAL COUNTDOWN to v1.0 !!!

This is probably my last 0.90.0 session, a quick SSTO design...uses four Rapiers. Got RCS fuel and batteries plus solar panels. Flew it into orbit, and just after one orbit, I decided to do re-entry and landed it at KSC, with Jeb at the controls of course. Used my Logitech X3D stick. So long BETA http://imgur.com/a/sFJB1

Your KSP "preflight checks" or funny rituals :)
rodion_herrera replied to Goddess Bhavani's topic in KSP1 Discussion
If you fly KSP aircraft or aerospace craft using a joystick, yoke, rudder, throttle or other HOTAS setup, like I do, preflight checks are no joke. If you forget that a throttle setting or some toggle switch is set to "ON", you could be in for big trouble after you hit the spacebar. -
I'm surprised no one has done something similar yet hahaha! Enjoy!

Wait just a moment there. Are you implying that the Squad staff could be so unimaginative, dense or inept, that they couldn't have thought up of all the features other people assume to be "taken from" other mods? Granted, they do look as if they were taken from other people's work, but I don't see a sign that says they can't do that--it's their product, and nobody ordered those people to make those mods, and Squad/Harvester did say whatever you see on 1.0 is what they have previously envisioned since Day 1. So I think the accusation is flimsy.

Manual docking (purely visual) without using RCS. I developed this as a skill, during times when I underestimated how much monoprop I should carry. I ran out, but...as Cooper said, "It's necessary."

The Most Fabulous KSP Girandola
rodion_herrera replied to rodion_herrera's topic in KSP1 Challenges & Mission ideas
First off, I want to thank the newest contributors to this challenge. I'm glad that despite the rather peculiar requirements of the challenge, that you still stepped forward and attempted it. But I am still acknowledging the fact (as some pointed out) that for this challenge to be a "formal" KSP Challenge, I really have to have stricter guidelines or requirements/limits. However, as my workload just increased in the past few days, I can no longer monitor this thread on a regular basis. However, you are free to continue posting your girandola attempts if only for fun or exchanging notes and builds. Thanks again to everyone who participated! -
