how do you deal with new patches breaking your ships
kinnison replied to endl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Go into a fetal position and cry horribly after I rage quit. I haven't updated to Beta yet for fear of losing the latest career save. Because of the way I play with very little multi-day warps, I rarely get a chance to do interplanetarty missions and most of my gameplay is the Kerbal system. So far I have about 35 (non-flag) flights active. Most are unmanned missions to other planets that are still days or months away from SOI events -
totm june 2018 Work-in-Progress [WIP] Design Thread
kinnison replied to GusTurbo's topic in KSP1 The Spacecraft Exchange
I want to have a stock SSTO that can deliver a Full red tank. I started fiddling with a VTOL version. THe idea was to have the Rear "Engine" section decouple and the forward "Cockpit" section would maneuver the red tank where it was needed. Then the Forward section would decouple from the red tank (or take an empty), reattach to the engine section. and bring it back to the surface, reducing the waste. SO far I have been able to only get an Empty red tank into LKO with added Solid fuel boosters. and the first attempt to land the craft without the red tank ended up with a catastrophic spin. -
Where will YOUR kerbonauts celebrate New Year's Eve?
kinnison replied to viktor19's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I returned most of them to KSP. Tho i have 2 on an asteroid redirect mission, and 2 going to Duna. The Big 3 are at KSC making plans for manned missions after the initial unmanned -
with stock parts i really don't think it is possible to make a Mk3 SSTO that can carry cargo something like a full red tank (which is my goal). I got one I was working on, but could only get an empty Red tank to orbit with the help of some boosters and a VTOL using MK2 parts

A solar eclipse just destroyed my space station!
kinnison replied to Skylion's topic in KSP1 Discussion
when I am building something usually how it gets powered is the 2nd to last thing I do. at the minimum 2 solar panels and a Batman, or a RTG. That is one of my issues early in career, normally an unmanned probe cannot make it to minmus without a solar panel. -
Best orbit for Mün/Minmus station?
kinnison replied to Musil's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I don't like to wait. So I have some fuel in a polar orbit, with my station with fuel and a lab at an equatorial orbit. -
i don't think I will do career anymore. I hate grinding

Scrooge McDuck: What do you know about Dirigibles? Captain Farley Foghorn (pilot for hire): Only that they are very hard to pronounce how-nasa-could-build-a-cloud-city-over-venus NASA thinking about using lighter then air craft to explore Venus. at 50km and "sea level" pressure you could go outside wearing in nothing but an oxygen mask. So how can i do this is KSP? this seems awesome Almost as awesome as a similar mission to Jupiter or saturn

And old hand at this game, and can easily get into orbit with beginning tech on my first mission. then it is basically science spamming minmus and the mun until i get the tech to build an SSTO and cheaply and easily launch "Fine Print" satellites

That's no moon. not even a plutoid

Anyone else want to like career mode but just can't?
kinnison replied to Fourjays's topic in KSP1 Discussion
My problem with career is that it is nearly impossible to maximize the efficacy of craft until you get "cubic octagonal struts" Not to mention you need batteries and solar panels for unmanned probes. I had some problems with craft losing all power before they even reached minmus. then the stupidity of follow up missions when you get a new science instrument. Then i have found there is no point going outside Kerbins SOI until you get far along the tech to at least the 2nd to last tier. When you can get all your science via Minmus and Mun. By the time a craft reaches another planetary body you are already building stations and figuring out the logistics of refueling SSTO landers -
Optimal TWR for Hybrid SSTO
kinnison replied to kinnison's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
6 Rams intakes, i don't think the intakes are the issue. my ascent profile must suck. I usually level out around 20k and just try to keep the craft accelerating. -

Optimal TWR for Hybrid SSTO
kinnison replied to kinnison's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
down to 25 tons. The lifting force is well behind CoG. and i get "stuck" at about 30k when the Twin Turbojets start flaming out. best i have gotten is around 1700m/s orbital speed before I cannot overcome atmospheric drag. I just don't see how I can get more with less. Unless i don't use NERVAs and instead use aerospikes or something else to push be into LKO -
Optimal TWR for Hybrid SSTO
kinnison replied to kinnison's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
since i am using stock i tend to have problems in the lift department. So i overcompensate with more engines. thanks for the feedback -
I have been fiddling around with stock SSTOs. using the MK2 parts I have built a high Delta-V (.3 TWR 4k NERVA in orbit) Cargo plane around 35 tons. for me I find it too difficult to ascend below a TWR of 3. I seems to need more "oomf" to get past the drag issues. and can consistently with relative ease get close to an orbital speed of 2k at 30000meters before switching to rockets. But i have heard people going as lot as 1.5 or 2 TWR is a TWR of 3 too much?

You Will Not Go To Space Today - Post your fails here!
kinnison replied to Mastodon's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I have started putting probe cores on my booster stages with the idea to maybe refuel them or have a better chance of deorbiting them. I have had some rather unstable payloads recently and controlled from the Booster stage. keep forgetting to change where i control the craft when I stage the booster and see my payload go off the screen in a hurry -
Mainly just spent boosters. Some fine print probes I left as abandoned "debris" Since I just started a new game for .25 I don't have anything that has gone interplanetary

in reality there are many days logged on supercomputers to plan some of these missions and multiple gravity assists with minimal fuel. the main reason is for every ounce on craft weight you save, means it is far cheaper to launch into space. less fuel = less money. For me it is mostly trial by error. I could spend hours fine tuning a maneuver node to save only a few tens of delta-V

recap of the explosion over the launchpad... should have used more struts From my armchair and amatuer opinion it looks like something was leaking from the top of the booster stage when it was ignited. then the booster went Ka-Bloowy leaving the upper stages with nothing to go up with. It went down and destroyed the launchpad. Waiting for someone to Blame Obama, and then call for NASA's budget to be cut to nothing to prevent this kind of waste. Hope ISS has enough supplies until the next one. I heard the canned borcht is the food of last resort.

KSP first? Reddit user CuriousMetaphor's EVE return, squared.
kinnison replied to Majorjim!'s topic in KSP1 Discussion
I agree. It bet it can be done, IMHO it would be more impressive to not use a seat but a lander can, or even a Mk3 capsule. -
STUNTS a 1990 pre 486 racing game. A roomate and i would often design killer tracks for eachother. Nothing better then doing a ramp jump into a double loop with a tunnel in the middle, then entering "GOD DAMN YOU <name>!" into the high scores when you finally are able to finish the track after about 10 minutes of real time driving the other was the old classic "X-wing" game by totally games. my roomate and i would often have sessions where one would be the pilot an have the joysitck, while the other would have the over complicated keyboard and be the "R2 unit". in the first tour of duty mission "ID Recon" we would follow the mission orders and try to do the mission without killing the annoying TIE fighters following us. The object was to fly close to the freighters and cause the following tie fighters to crash into them. the common tactic was to transfer all power to engines and see how close you could get to other space craft The whole idea of creating a "game within a game" was pivotal for my nostalgia for old games

as an amateur astronomer, and armchair astrophysicist I love being able to see the ISS in orbit. The relatively BLAZING magnitude of the station as it makes a flyby is rather fascinating to me. many a night i have spent in my backyard in the suburbs of LaCrosse wi. on a clear night i use the ISS detector app (android) to find it, pr anything is visible while enjoying a nice fire in my fire pit as i often say to my wife on those nights. it is going to appear "there" and you will know it when you see it. Sure enough a bright dot appears in the sky and travels across the sky. and silly me tracks it until i lose sight of it. making that magical connection in my mind between me and the astronauts and the thousands of support personal that make it possible. wishing with all of my heart that someday I might travel beyond the atmosphere and with the stars Anyone do the same? or at least spend nights looking up the the sky to find bits of the evidence of civilization in the heavens as satellites fly by?

Seriously? over 30 KSC biomes?
kinnison replied to SkyRex94's topic in KSP1 Suggestions & Development Discussion
I really don't like the Kerbal Science. That is the science on the planet. Especially with all the Biomes and lack of points. It is not much better when Minmus and Mun are the only other bodies with multiple Biomes. Too often i just get stuck farming the science points before even an interplanetary launch window opens. And there really is no point in sending probes, when you can get more science with manned missions. Not to mention the probe cores are so much further down the tech tree.
