[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Doubtful. GIMP 2 has evolved a lot. It's possible he's just not running it in single window mode. But I do know that GIMP has changed a lot between the minor versions in GIMP 2. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
It crashes? What's it? That's an unqualified pronoun right there. I could interpret that as the game crashes or the shuttle crashes and I would believe both. If the game crashes, you're likely exceeding the memory limit of the game. If it's the ship, you should try reinstalling the mod. Why it would crash 1km above the surface, I don't know why it would happen. Off the top of my head I could see it being overstress, but unless you're using FAR (which appears not to be the case) the shuttle wouldn't fly apart or burn up (although that would require the DREC mod). -

I have a similar problem to yours, minus RSS since I don't use it. Yeah, it doesn't create enough drag even angled up to slow itself through the atmosphere. I also get a strange bug where the fuselage survives an impact at several hundred m/s with the water. -

Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Well, true, it isn't supposed to fly like a conventional aircraft, but I would at least expect it to generate enough lift to keep it in the air. I actually don't know if it was able to do such a thing. I'd have to look up the shuttle's flight characteristics. -

Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yeah, I tried taking off with an empty KSO (infinite fuel) from the runway with your FAR config and it just doesn't seem to generate enough lift to keep itself airborne. The FAR config will undoubtedly require cheating to manufacture a wing area that generates suitable lift. -

I'm just using two boosters. But using FAR significantly reduces drag. Okay, cool, sounds good. -

Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yeah, I guess I wasn't noticing the temperature prior to separation. Also, in your DRE config, not all the gear are shielded and one wing isn't shielded either. I dropped your config into a .cfg file and let module manager do its thing. I hope that was the right installation process for it and that I didn't mess it up (and that being the reason why I'm not seeing the shielding). -

[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Okay, so is there a solution to the exploding EFT when you separate the boosters? I do a test separation on the launchpad and nothing bad happens, but when I do it mid-flight, the EFT always blows up and it's frustrating because the KSO doesn't have enough fuel in its internal tank to even circularize enough to survive a reentry with DRE. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
It already should use more than 2.5GB of RAM. I've had my game consume about 3.5GB before crashing. That being said, there's an official Win64 build coming in 0.24 and an unofficial hack for Win64 support (although it's quite buggy). -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
That's what it would appear to me instinctively because the thrust isn't centered on the CoM. But from my testing with the Super 25, more rotation starts from firing the OMS in the gimabled position. I don't understand why though. -

Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
When you separate from the launch stack, you want to turn off all gimbals because the center of thrust is the shuttle itself. When using OMS, turn off the gimbal because otherwise you'll apply a slight torque and start spinning. -

Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I just want to say that in my experience, lifting off in the KSO Super 25 with the FAR config you supplied seems to make it want to pull to one side. It doesn't fly straight, it has an affinity to pull to one side. Also, when you get to the point where you're nearing 45 degrees, the craft also likes to start rolling and pitch down even lower than 45 degrees destabilizing and causing booster separation to destroy the EFT. I don't know if you've found that in your testing. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yep, sure thing. I'll test the DRE separately and with FAR (but no FAR w/o DRE because, heat). I'll let you know how it goes. And okay, sounds good. I wasn't aware that it did that when I installed the config. I'll try again and move the wings back into the right location. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I loaded up my game with your FAR configuration file and I couldn't even use it because it borked the ship construction. It moved the wings on the ship. I'll post screenshots later. But I didn't even bother using it because it messed up the stock craft file. -

I'd love to try it. I also have an experimental DRE config to test out too. I'll try these today or tomorrow and report back. Thanks! -

[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Let me know if you need any help testing or creating these alternate configs. I'd love to do my best to help out. But yeah, it was a strange reentry and it took forever because I gained lift in the upper atmosphere and raised my periapsis again. That's the one thing I dislike about KSO reentries. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
So, I just did a full liftoff and reentry with the Super 25 and spotted a few issues along the way. But before I talk about my experience I'll preface it by saying I use both FAR and DRE. The first is one that I know has been reported here and that is the fact that the LRB separation destroys the EFT because it overheats (not sure what's going on with it/why it happens). This meant I had to cut my missions short, so I did a once around type abort procedure. On reentry, I lost both my stabilizers even though I was angled between 10-15 degrees nose up (I'd be more like 20 degrees if it were possible to angle up that high). I don't know why they burned up. They should have been shielded. The last thing that I noticed is that it's too agile in the atmosphere. It moves too quickly when it should move much more sluggishly. I almost lost it in the lower atmosphere because it started flipping around all crazy. I barely regained control before it got too low. I was able to ditch in the water without too much trouble, but without both my stabilizers it was definitely a challenge. -
A program for making KSP....almost 64 bit.(debunked)
Spartan-S63 replied to Tidus Klein's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Yeah, anymore these days most applications are large address aware that are compiled for 32 bit. Also, the real theoretical maximum is 16 exabytes because 2^64 is the number of addressable bits. On Windows 7 Home Premium, it only supports 16 GB of RAM and the Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate SKUs support 192 GB of memory. For Windows 8, the regular SKU supports 128 GB of memory and the Professional and Enterprise SKUs support 512 GB of memory. -
Likely not, although you might notice better stability when loading large parts in because you'll have more CPU registers to use to do calculations. You probably won't notice anything, but I do remember hearing from some of the 64 bit users that their massive ships don't quite weigh down their systems as much.

KSP 64bits on Windows (this time, it's not a request)
Spartan-S63 replied to Lilleman's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Oh my god, that's pretty monumental news that 0.24 will feature a Win64 version. I actually can't believe it's coming that soon. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
Yeah, that's the issue I have. In a relatively gradual descent, it's hard to pull out of it. I understand it should be able to pull out of really steep glide without some sort of power, but a glider without the ability to pull out of a 15-20 degree descent is a little irritating. Not sure if it's intentional. -
[0.90] Kerbin Shuttle Orbiter System v4.13
Spartan-S63 replied to helldiver's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
I'm glad I wasn't jumping to conclusions with purely empirical evidence. But yeah, it definitely seems like something is amiss with the control surfaces or weight distribution. I should also note, that I'm using FAR. Not sure if that makes much of a difference.
