  1. Worthwhile to use more polys on the cylinder? Also, possibly best to re scale that to 1.875 for the spaceplane--given the route you've taken that may be best.
  2. So, a few point for modeling purposes: -Yes, it's launched on a stack and glides for reentry. I'll leave the KSP weights to you--that's really a balance question. If we were talking about RSS it'd weigh ~12-18 tons. But that's a non-sequitur in stock. -I'll try to finish the top view (realistic RCS placement/design is the current holdup) and get you a side-view. But note that it's a pretty minimal lifting body in the name of aesthetics. -Note: The docking port on this is substantially larger than the ones in my other drawings (2x if you're sticking to the drawings. This may not track to a KSP conversion) -I imagine the OM would be 2.5m The actual craft would be divided like so: 1.875m cylindrical crew container (command with 3 crew capacity plus SAS in stock) (the black part) 1.8875>1.25m cylindrical adapter (with 3 crew capacity) (the first white part) 1.25>.6125 long (and vertically offset) adapter (with RCS fuel--I imagine engines would also use RCS) .6125m nosecone (with probe core)
  3. Good work, Orbitus! I'll churn out some other asset concepts related to the cargo vehicle (RCS thrusters, antenae, etc). Also, you were correct (from a KSP perspective anyway) to use monoprop engines. This aside, I present a much nicer-looking rehash of the rival power's 6-man pod. It's not quite done yet (needs a bit more detailing) and a launch vehicle to match, but it's a substantial improvement now that I've started to develop the rival power's visual style. Also, this vehicle would be used (sot-of Lunex-style) in a direct-ascent moon landing in combination with a bit of extra hardware (an nuclear EDS/LOI/Descent stage and a methalox ascent/(partial) departure stage). Did I mention it's pretty! (Pictured here in an LEO configuration with an orbital lab module that would be launched behind it) Some notes: -Modest habitation integrated (an extremely small chemical toilet and a bit of storage space, essentially) but without much in the way of comfort. An orbital module is required for a comfortable, sane crew. -Also, the crew rides in Soyuz-style Kazbek seats--it's a fairly small-diameter spacecraft and that space counts. The seats fold away for more living space. -Carries a surprisingly large amount of fuel for a ship of it's size (stored in the front--crew aft). -When used as part of a direct-ascent stack crew capacity is reduced to 3-4. The extra space is occupied by additional consumables, equipment, and EVA-capable space suits. The airlock module and bulkier gear (such as a rover) is stored on the outside of the lunar ascent stage. -A slightly magical thermal protection system is required (spooky!)
  4. I'm always happy to churn out concept art As far as actual rockets, the Saturn-analogue is probably the most fun (IMO).
  5. Good work so far! 1.25m is going to be awfully small though. 2.5 might make more sense.
  6. Also, engines: These are probably associated with the first power's vehicles--not sure whether they would be a cluster or not (since the first power's engines are all hidden under shrouds). If one was hell-bent on modeling KSP parts, these might be a good place to start!
  7. RE Scale: These are built to RL rather than Kerbal scale. So you're going to have some problems directly adapting them to standard 1.25/2.5m scales . The descent module on the 5 man pod is about 7.5 ft in radius--it's a pretty convenient scale baseline to work with. If you were making a fully KSP styled ship you'd have to make some design decisions about what's smaller or larger. Also, I envision the red on those modules to be Russian-style insulation blankets (maybe?). RE Other Art: Yeah, if you want! (but I suspect you'll get more traffic with your own thread if that's a concern). Also, I've made the rival power's first proper rocket--it's a Saturn V analogue (comparable payload) and the largest example here so far with a 30 foot diameter and ~380 feet in height. Also, it's violently mugging the Atlas in terms of stolen design elements Unlike the Atlas, S1 engines aren't dropped--the base is just for spacing. Also unlike Atlas, it's a 3 stage vehicle (Cryogenic EDS (S3) is hidden under the fairing). This rocket is probably methalox all the way through (possibly with a solid-core NTR EDS for added lunacy... (Hurr hurr!)--these are the bad guys after all). And if it is NTR they may go for a direct ascent profile.
  8. The first spacecraft of the rival power--a reusable orbiter (launched on a conventional rocket stack) with a 6-man crew. Crew sit to the rear while fuel and life support are in the front. Scale on this one is a bit iffy, but it's probably a shirtsleeves-only type setup.
  9. A 2-module space station derived from the 5-man capsule's habitation and service module. The station is pretty small--smaller than Mir in terms of diameter. Module 1 ("Prosperity") is a power and service module. The second module (the node) is used for storage, habitation, and living space. My grid is in Imperial and that's set in stone. I have faith that everyone here is numerate enough to divide by 3.3 in their heads
  10. A fairly cramped 2 man (and in shirtsleeves at that!) pod and the recolored rocket to match (plus an LES fairing with grid fins). Unfortunately, my 3d skills aren't quite up for this, but if I can find a modeler, I can churn out loads and loads of concepts. These were done in Autorealm--it's technically mapping software, but it's excellent grid functions and simpplicity make for a much more pleasant experience than Photoshop or Illustrator.
  11. A five-man capsule based on Vostock. The descent module is (just) slightly larger than a soyuz's and the habitation/equipment module is immediately behind (and substantially larger than soyuz. This has the disadvantage of a capsule with two major structural holes, one in the heat shield. Beh. It's prettier this way. Also, a derivative cargo module:
  12. Also, I'm trying to figure out these guys' rivals' rockets. I reckon hypergolic+solids and angry hi-viz yellow is a pretty solid theme for these guys. (So I'm taking suggestions/inspiration for other rockets!)
  13. Also, a derivative of the above: a smaller, cheaper small satellite (or Mercury-sized capsule) launcher. Seven-segment SRB for first stage, kerolox or N2O4/UDMH second stage, and third stage in/immediately below the fairing. Satellite launch fairing configuration shown.
  14. UPDATES! I've been doodling rockets! This one is a vaguely Soyuz-like dealie with a kerolox (or N2O4/UDMH, perhaps?) core and four solid motors and second stage of the same. An upper stage would be hidden inside the fairing as needed. I reckon that this rocket is slightly larger than a Soyuz--closer to a Long March 2E in size and configuration (so between 15 and 20 tons to LEO).   15. I'd really prefer a more understated color scheme. Kethane has a big problem in that it doesn't really match other stock and mod parts especially well.

  17. I'm confused: my test contracts aren't working quite as advertised -I'm not getting a set number of parts to test. Once I finish the contract, the test parts disappear; even when I recover the mission. -I'm not getting any limit on the amount of test parts I can use. -The test parts are all costing me funds.

Part 1: After many missions by small national space agencies and the occasional private corporation or dashing thrill-seeker, kerbalkind came to the conclusion that the only way to satisfy their insatiable thirst for exploration and adventure was to pool their resources. To that end, IKEA, the International Kerbal Exploration Association, was created. Their first task, supported by the UKS (launching from Kermansburg), the KSR (launching from Roka Cosmodrome), PDSRK (Launching from Orok Spaceport), the Republic of Narf, the Federal Republic of Krutch, and the kingdom of Dongle (all launching from Pleasant Valley). Even the smallest countries contributed as best they could. North Kerea donated some of its substantial hoard of delicious blutonium for snacks (and also NTRs if there's any left over). Jebediah Kerman and his band of slightly mad engineers and pilots also made major contributions. In recognition of his pioneering role in Kerbal spaceflight it was agreed that Jeb's Junkyard would be renovated and renamed the Kerbal Space Center, a neutral launch site and the location of the first manned mission to the Mun. To accomplish this tall task, engineers concluded that they were, in the words of the father of spaceflight himself, "gonna need a lot more boosters." Specifically, enough to launch approximately 100 tons into Kerbin orbit. This new rocket was named Keraloo, after the giant blue lizard that supports the world on its back. Three unmanned test missions were scheduled but after engineers rapidly got bored and it became clear that nobody could possibly afford two more unmanned launches of such a huge rocket, the engineers cleared the crash test dummies out of Keraloo-2 and replaced them with the always smiling Jebediah Kerman (Commander), former president of the UKS and space enthusiast, Robert "Bob" Kerman (CM Pilot), and Alcal Kerman, the mostly bold two-and-a-half time hero of the Kerbal Socialist Republic (MM Pilot). Rooly Kerman (PDSRK) and the unfortunately named Hanger Kerman (UKS) were chosen to be the capsule communicators. At dawn, Keraloo-2 was rolled onto Pad 1 at KSC and 1000 metric tons of highly energetic propellant was exploded in something vaguely like a controlled fashion. ******** Rooly: "We're a bit close to the rocket, don't you think, Comrade Hanger?" Hanger: "I'm not sure Jeb's old cinderblock shelter is doing to help us. Oh Zod (we kneel before him...) we're gonna die." Jeb: "I made that thing myself, boys! It held up during the Jebini launches just fine. A bit singed...and a few fires. But that's nothing to worry about! I'm sure it'll handle 12,000 Kilonewtons of RAW POWER just fine. After all, *I* built it! The only reason we didn't put more mainsails on this baby is because the appropriations people can't count any higher than eight!" Rooly: "Yes. We are most definitely going to die. It was good knowing you, Comrade." Jeb: "JUST PRESS THAT BIG RED BUTTON ALREADY! WE'RE GOING TO SPACE, BOYS!...Err boy. And girl." Hanger: "What did I do to make you angry, Zod?" *Squeezing his eyes shut with his hand in his ears, Hanger uses his forehead to press the Big Red Button* Bob: "SPAAAAAACE!" Alcal: "I think I left my toaster plugged in... OHMYZODLOUD! LOUDLOUDLOUD! MY EARDRUMS MUST SCREAM BUT THEY HAVE NO MOUTHS! AHHHHH!" Jeb: "YEEHAW!" Rooly: "Comrade?" *Crawling out from a ruined pile of charred cinderblocks some time later* Hanger: "You're stepping on my head!" Jeb: "This is Keraloo to KSC. We are at 35 klicks. Everything looks nominal here." Rooly: "We copy, Comrade Jebediah. You are go for Staging. Repeat, you are go for Staging." *Rooly sets down his portable radio and inhales a fistfull of painkillers.* Jeb: "Let's do this!" Alcal: "Please make the loud noises stop! I want out!" *Alcal restrains herself from yanking the big handle labeled ABORT.* Bob: "SPAAAACE!" Alcal: "Guys? Do you feel that?" Jeb: "Eh. Just a few loose screws. It's nothing to fret over." Bob: "Spaaace?" Alcal: "This is Keraloo to Control. We're having some unexpected oscillation. Jeb thinks it's loose screws." Hanger: "We copy, Keraloo. The engineers are telling me that that's normal. The KR2-XL is a bit angry. They think that they should have sacrificed a few more chickens to appease the fire spirit before launch. But they're sure you'll be fine." *Hanger rubs his bandaged head. Kerbal heads are tough enough to take a cinderblock or four. But that doesn't mean he likes it.* Alcal: "We have a fire spirit. WE HAVE A FIRE SPIRIT! OHZOD! AHHHH!" Rooly: "Who is that guy anyway and how did he get into mission control! GET HIM OUT! Never mind that, Keraloo. The *real* engineers say you should be fine. You're still within the nominal limits." *Rooly covers his mic and talks to Flight Dynamics.* Rooly: "Give or take five percent. Mostly give." Jeb: "We are at 80 klicks and uncontroversially in space. The Kerman line was a while ago actually. I think we missed it. You hear that Bob? We're in space!" Bob: "This is very exciting! I never thought I'd actually get the chance do this." Alcal: "One minute to stage two separation. The sooner we get rid of that fire spirit the less likely we are to die horribly. Also, I may have accidentally jettisoned the escape tower because I can't see it out the window anymore." Jeb: "This is Keraloo to Control. We're begining our checkout orbit now. 55 minutes to ejection burn and all is nominal." Hanger: "We copy." Bob: "I can taste the Mun already!" Alcal: "Stage three is working just fine. The regular KR2-L is a lot less temperamental without the fire spirit." Jeb: "But we've got so much extra thrust!" Tune in again next week for the exploits of our daring kerbonauts!

  22. What would you recomend for Deadly Reentry configs? Regular RSS?
  23. Request: can we please have the crocodile interstages in 1.25 to .625 and 3.75 to 5 (in other words, a full range of tweak-scale values).
  24. I merged it with some of your other parts (the asteroid parts). Maybe that's what's done it? Doesn't account for the fact that some of my animations are working.
