Just look up at the contrail an airliner leaves, its often as wide or wider than the wingspan - they expand a fair bit, yeah.

A few cents to contribute to our knowledge of Kerbin's water.

I dunno, the coloured squares with letters in that replaces the silhouette that people get if they dont have an avatar looks suspiciously Microsofty. I wonder if the acquisition by TakeTwo has forced a move to their corporate software environment? A similar thing is happening in my company (and it is screwing everything up.)

totm aug 2023 What funny/interesting thing happened in your life today?
p1t1o replied to Ultimate Steve's topic in The Lounge
Yes, for the record, that kind of "humour" can be as distasteful as its subject material, usually causing the phrase "its just a joke" or "Im just joking" to be spat with increasing intensity as if that made any difference - though this is not to say that clever humour cannot be made out of very controversial topics, or that some legitimate forms of humour cant be shocking - in fact it is an important way for society to digest, understand and deal with some topics. But I digress. In the interest of distancing myself from certain types of distasteful/evil persons, the funny part in this case was the mid-identification of the media. Media which was not intended by its author to be a joke. -

Stumbled across a white supremacist website, because the first thing I saw was SO racist I at first assumed it to be a very "edgy" (for want of a better word) meme/joke/satire piece, it was so racist that it went all the way to silly. I actually thought someone was making a joke. If they were it might even have been quite good satire. You know how like if you hate someone/something, and you describe that hate, if you keep going and escalating the verbal descriptions, you inevitably end up sounding silly, like: I hate that thing. I want to smash it. I wasnt to smash into tiny piece. And then burn those pieces. And then i want to take the ash..and..and I wanto burn that ash as well..and then well take that SUPER ash and throw it into the SUN! AND THEN i WANT TO DETROY THE SUN AND THE WHOLE UNIVERSE AND ALL OF CREATION AND CHOP IT TO BITS WITH KNIVES AND THEN BURN THOSE KNIVES TOO BECAUSE THEYLL BE RUINED BECAUSE GAWD I HATE THAT THING SO MUCH! Yeah it was a little like that. But on scrolling a little it became more and more obvious that it was non-ironic, sadly. But the genuinely funny part? They were all extremely proud of, impressed by, talked alot about, shared multiple pictures and videos exclusively featuring the size and colour of their.......certain male appendages. Anyway, I dont want to start A big discussion about racsim, but it was hilarious. -
As far as I know, it is ok to make youtube clips of any game footage whatsoever, why wouldnt it be? There is no law against people seeing you use some software you bought. The problems only arise when you want to monetise them. Take that with a pinch of salt though, Im no lawyer.

I KNEW it! All credit to you though for doing the actual legwork! I knew thermodynamics wasn't being uncharacteristically kind! I havnt been through it exhaustively, but what it boils down to is that you get less cooling than previously expected. The exit temp is dependant on the Mach number of the exhaust (relative to the speed of sound within the exhaust) which is dependant on expansion ratio and the specific heat ratio of the exhaust (for hydrogen and air it equals about 1.4). If I am running my numbers correctly, then due to the specific heat ratio of water vapour, the SSME nozzle cuts the temperature of the combustion products roughly in half with an expansion ration of 9:1 and NOT by a factor of a thousand or so. And further to that, in order to drop the temperature by such a high factor, the exhaust velocity would have to be double that of what an SSME already achieves - which would require a monstrously long nozzle, if it is possible at all. So as I suspected, whilst it is possible to cool your spacecraft in this way, the gains and losses are not so perfect. ***edit*** FYI: the specific heat ratio of hydrogen is 1.41 and water vapour is 1.33, so expect fairly similar behaviour.

I remember learning the tables but echo what @Steel said, memorising them isnt worth much. I had a terrible time at university studying chemistry, approximately half the syllabus was understanding concepts (this part I could do), the other half was wrote memorisation. Many lectures consisted of nothing but copying down what was on the board for the full 50 mins, to be fully memorised. So in exams, which would consist of say 5 questions for 20 marks each, I would get high (18-19-20) marks for some of the questions and low (3-4-5) marks for those that relied on memorisation, giving me a very mixed bag of results. I dont have any tricks to combat the wrote memorisation, just that its a ubiquitous problem. People with good memory's have a great advantage. On the other hand, if you can understand the underlying concepts of a problem, you can figure out answers regardless of what you remember - not only that but you can make real headway even against problems that you havnt been taught a memorisable answer to. Example: For biochemistry exams, we had to learn by heart the Krebs cycle - you literally didnt have to know a thing about it, if you could reproduce the cycle diagram, you could score 18-19-20 out of 20 for that exam question. But if you understood some the chemistry, not only can you reproduce the cycle without memorising it 100%, but you also understand what is going on on a much deeper level, making concepts peripheral to this much easier to grasp as well. There were a lot of people in my year who were not particularly good at chemistry, but were great at memorising things. They would get first class degrees but in practical laboratory classes would not know their hand from their behind. *** For what its worth, engineering studies are maths-heavy, but learning multiplication tables isnt much of an advantage - you've always got access to a calculator. You will have to learn many equations though, there is always stuff you need to memorise, to some degree or another. Have you done/learned/been taught any calculus/differentiation yet? If you can handle that, you're good.

Does anyone known what happen with: Making History DLC
p1t1o replied to Pawelk198604's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Dont worry, you can pretend its a beta - its not like it isnt going to need the usual suite of hotfixes and patches once released. -
But it doesnt? If it did, then an SSME would resemble gods-own snowblower, even at 1bar. ??

So, about this "cold expanded hydrogen" exhaust cooling system for stealthy ships: It is stated that to cool gas from 3000K to 20K requires an expansion ratio of 5:1 or thereabouts. However, I have just been reading about the Space Shuttle Main engines, whose combustion chamber temperatures spiked around 3300K. The SSME's had an expansion ration even greater, of around 9:1 (10 inch throat, 90 inch bell exit). So how come the space shuttle didnt have a cryogenic exhaust?

When was the last time Squad mentioned multiplayer, in any way? Because if they only mentioned it briefly and a long time ago, havnt said anything about it since, and nothing has been implemented...its a bit silly to still be having conversations about "When will they put it in?"

Technically, I only asked if it would be trivial... Its usually best to assume that a comment is being made in good faith, otherwise one generates needless friction. This is a forum for suggestions, its not the place to say "if you want it, do it yourself." -
Does if someone lie on pilot license medicals can be found
p1t1o replied to Pawelk198604's topic in Science & Spaceflight
"How can they find out if you lie on a medical exam?" I'm not really comfortable discussing that question. *** Are you interested in a pilots license/career but are worried about a medical condition? I can tell that for the EU there is a standard medical certification that all airline pilots must pass. The main concerns are eyesight, hearing and cardiovascular fitness. You have to re-certify every year I think (though these yearly tests might be less stringent). Bottom line is, if you get caught, they can make sure you never pilot an aircraft again, simple as that. And since training to be an airline pilot costs (you, the aspiring pilot) in excess of £100,000 I dont think many people risk it. -
You know "railings" right? They come in numerous types, but a large proportion of them look something along these lines: I used to be strongly of the opinion that they must be spears in long-term storage, in wait for "the coming of the great dragon". It seemed to make alot of sense, I was quite nonchalant about it (Because it was obvious that the dragon wasnt coming for quite a while, otherwise why would they be in such long-term storage? When you see someone taking them down, thats when to worry.) **** I was also terrified of watching the news. Why? Because at the time the "ozone hole" was a big thing, and I thought one day all of the air would "leak out" through the hole. Obviously the newsrooms would be affected first, I was afraid one day I would see the news and they would all be wearing spacesuits which would mean that it was happening.
