5 g's is well within the DRE survivability range. Did you check the F3 window to see that it was definitely g-forces that killed them? (I had a reentry last night that topped out at 10 g's for a few moments and Jeb survived.)
-
It's completely broken at the moment due to planet-renaming shenanigans and the move to Kopernicus.
-
Turns out, this is just a weird linux issue. Decompressing the .zip says "Can't! Errors!" but all the files decompress successfully.
-
The .zip file wouldn't uncompress for me -- the system said it had errors.
-
Well, it won't be long before we have some real actual Pluto data!

R... read?? My god, man, do you think I'm a rocket scientist or something? In all seriousness, I never even considered there'd be different shields for orbital vs. lunar / interplanetary and thought it was just up to ablator amount. As for the return periapsis, it's been so long since I've tried that sort of reentry I simply wasn't sure what I should be aiming for. I got 51km by looking at what Trajectories' curves would indicate a return instead of a bounce, but maybe it's not quite adjusting for RSS/RO correctly.
-
Important tip: If your lander somehow behaves unbalanced (no idea why; everything looked good when I built it) causing it to want to rotate when under thrust and you've used a lander engine that doesn't (or only barely) gimbals, your RCS propellent will run out and then you can't aim the lander. And when you try to abort to orbit and also have an ascent engine that also doesn't gimble, then end of your landing mission is a bit of a foregone conclusion. I think this is my 5th or 6th attempt at an RSS/RO lunar landing and is the first to actually achieve lunar orbit. Also, my heat shield on the CM exploded at 70km during reentry so the mission was a total loss. I'm guessing a periapsis of 51km when falling from the moon was wrong? Too steep or too shallow?

[1.12.*] Deadly Reentry v7.9.0 The Barbie Edition, Aug 5th, 2021
jrandom replied to Starwaster's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
RSS/RO reentry question: I set up a 51km periapsis coming back from the moon in the Mk1-2 pod and the 4-meter heat shield (regular 4-meter, not the Mk1-2) exploded from overheating somewhere around 70-68km. My question is: did I come in too steep or too shallow?- 5,917 replies

Say, what's the best way to get a good star background (I don't know which mods conflict and which don't) and what's considered the best 8k start texture out there?
-
Oooh! I tried and failed so I hope you have better luck!
-
I'm halfway to the moon with this pre-release, so it's playable enough.
-
I wondered where that went. Have you added it to CKAN, perchance?
-
Yep. The common ones are this one, and the expanded one.
-
If you want it to look horizontal, you need to land at one of the moon's poles.
-
I know we're all keen on getting RO out the door but... but... what can we do to get clouds back? How far along is that? Is there any way I can help speed up the process?

Wheee! stupid day job have to go to bed now mumble grumble

It works! Both KW and RLA loaded! (What's a config unlock?)
-
wild applause Edit: Direct download link on the front page is broken, FYI
-
KW Rocketry appears to have no plugins included. The parts do have ModuleAnimateEmissive sections that look like this: MODULE { name = ModuleAnimateEmissive ThermalAnim = GriffonEmissiveAnim useHeat = True lerpMin = 0 lerpMax = 1100 lerpOffset = -150 lerpPow = 0.875 lerpOuterScalar = 1 lerpInnerScalar = 1 } There do not appear to be any duplicate module sections in the .cfgs. Edit: a quick search shows that the only ModuleAnimateEmissive.dll lives in SolverEngines, which comes from the RF 10.3 mod in this case.
-
I'm still getting loading freezes on some KW Rocketry engines when using RealFuels 10.3 and RealismOverhaul (RealEngines). I have no other engines configs installed. What would be the best way for me to troubleshoot this? (They were working with RF 10.2) Edit: Also still getting lockups with RLA engines as well. linux 64-bit RSS/RO prerelease Player.log (KW Rocketry) Player.log (RLA Stockalike)

Weird forum question: I no longer get automatic e-mail updates to this thread. Only this thread (as far as I know). Unsubscribing and re-subscribing doesn't help. Is there a way for me to get my e-mail notifications back? Also, important safety tip: When planning a mission to the moon and packing 12 days of food / water / oxygen it's, like, super important that you set your Kerbal time to Earth (24-hour days) instead of Kerbin time (6-hour days) or your "12 day's" supply runs out before you've managed to make the 4-day journey to the moon and all your astronauts die.

[1.3.1] Ferram Aerospace Research: v0.15.9.1 "Liepmann" 4/2/18
jrandom replied to ferram4's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
My aerodynamics texts say this isn't actually true. Ferram's got it right about the redirected airflow causing lift at 0 AoA for cambered wings.- 14,073 replies

I just had a rocket fragment at 6km and according to the F3 window it collided with a TT18-A Launch Stability Enhancer. Those are the launch tower thingies, right? So what's one doing magically appearing at 6km? If no one's encountered this before, I can do a clean run of the launch and get the logfile posted. Edit: AAAAAND now of course I can't reproduce it.
