The greatest (engineering) achievement of mankind
Aghanim replied to Camacha's topic in Science & Spaceflight
Agree. Our understanding of inertial fusion currently doesn't scale up toward multi kiloton explosion. Orion definitely need some other way to provide that explosive impulse before it will be seriously considered by everyone, because mass making nuke and losing some of it is not a good idea... -
I have a question. Is Centaur really have that 7 km/s delta V?
-
No, diesel cannot autoignite kethane, burn it in gas turbine or gas engine instead... Or pass it through a Fischer Tropsch reactor and it will be good So here is my solution: Divide the organic waste stream into 2: The first half go to anaerobic digester and it produce methane and biodigestate. The second half go to biochar retort and it produce syngas and biochar. Burn methane and syngas in gas turbine to generate electricity, mix biodigestate and biochar to make superfertilizer, kill chemical fertilizer dependence

I've pretty much run out of science fiction movies

!WARNING! BAD SCIFI ALERT I personally like Armaggedon more than Deep Impact because of fast paced action and great soundtrack Gravity seems to be fine -
Basically the Russians are really crazy and they want to make this: http://www.universetoday.com/30110/russia-considering-rocket-powered-precision-landing-for-next-generation-spacecraft/ That lander capsule will land on the earth with 100% SRB power, no parachute, no landing leg (!Imagine what will happen if the rocket malfunctions!) Because Kerbals love explosions, why we didn't make the same lander module, but with sepratron instead of downward facing SRB? Rules: 1. NO LITHOBRAKING! This means nothing should explode 2. You could use the drogue chute 3. You could use landing leg, but using none of them ensures that you follow the first rule (lithobraking using passenger capsule = dead = fail) 4. Sepratron cfg hacking is allowed if you feel sepratron is too powerful for this You could use any mods, but a mod that knows the radar altitude and fire the sepratron at the precise time is really recomended (kOS? Mechjeb script? Mechjeb autoland?)

Kerbal metabolic shutdown

Suggest this to TAC Life Support? -
Well I have encountered nearly the same problem. People now are fighting over the term MOBA and everyone now are inventing their own terms like SMARTASS, CASTLE, ARTS, ARTT for the fact that MOBA, multiplayer online battle arena, describe anything from FPS to platformer game (you know I'm biased to one game of particular by looking at my username). So, if we need to invent a new name/acronym, we need to make it catchy but at the same time it need to describe what it is doing, which warp drive is fine

I have several suggestions for this: 1. Telemachus and Mechjeb integration (if it even possible). So the KSPTOT will grab the current orbital parameters from mechjeb and it will directly input its burn parameters to mechjeb. Add autoburn button if its not too cheaty 2. Periapsis kick function, so you input the engine thrust and number of kicks/kick duration, and it will calculate when you need to execute the first kick and to execute the final interplanetary injection burn Your tool looks like the IMFD that I've never wrap my head into, but because of the tutorial now I understand how to use that

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Message_Passing_Interface I've been thinking for this, but the idea is to make a physics manager server that the physics/computationally intensive program (KSP or powder toy with 1x1 pressure grid) connect into it, and several computation units connects to the server. The computational unit can be located in the playing computer itself (multithreading without the program needing to be thread safe) or it could be located on other computer. So, in short, if your game lags, just throw more computers into it. This have an advantage that a normal supercomputer cluster could run the computation units If KSP have a lot of this brute force physics power, maybe all the things/vessels doesn't need to be on rails The problem is: Is it possible? I'm not a programmer myself

If only KSP added support for custom solar system...

Suggestion: 1. Add something to convert electric charge directly into megajoule, or make the science lab able to consume electric charge directly 2. Make something dedicated for electric to antimatter production, unmanned. At first it will be slower than the science lab, but after (insert amount here) science, it will generate antimatter (insert amount here) times more Both of those thing are preventing me to create a nice low sun orbit (3000 km) antimatter farm, where the solar panel are generating energy like crazy And this is optional suggestion: 3. Everyone knows that antimatter is a nice explosive, so add a line in the cfg (default off) that when the antimatter tank hits something it will explodes depending on the amount of antimatter inside And because of the above suggestion I remember one thing: 4. Add a antimatter catalyzed fusion rocket, the idea is to directly use antimatter instead of burning it in a reactor and generator with its waste heat and mass to power the DT Vista engine

Designing a working rocket for long payload
Aghanim replied to Aghanim's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Here is my full rocket design: -
Now I'll will make the second story... Bill: Alright engineers what is your plan for our first interstellar travel? Engineer 1: I called my design the Orion Colonization Rocket. First we need to build ALL of the ship on the ground. Then we detonate a series of nukes below it and we ride out the wave. The engine with enough nukes and right type of nukes will have obscenely high dV to take off the ground Engineer 2: I think that design is too wasteful. You m-still even doesn't say how they will refuel their ship at their destination. My design uses the Valkrie design, the engines are configured at the front, pulling the ship. I'm using fission fragment rocket with xenon afterburn fueled by kethane converter Engineer 3: Well all of your solutions are too slow. I'm proposing to use one of our cool looking warship and retrofit them with plasma drive and warp drive, powered by antimatter reactor. Engineer 1: FTL drive is only in science fiction! It doesn't even exist here Engineer 3:It is. Our eggheads at Exotic Propulsion Research Center finished a working prototype of a spacetime warping FTL drive. However, when they are trying to scale it up there is a problem: There isn't any electric generator with extremely high density. They think at a point to use antimatter, but they still doesn't know how to create enough antimatter to power up the warp drive. However, another group of scientists finally found the solution. They think Kerbol's extremely high magnetic field power trap a lot of antimatter collected by the core and the solar/cosmic wind interaction, and it have a lot of sunlight, so we could spam solar panels there, creating antimatter by normal means Bill: So your suggestion is to build a huge space station dedicated for generating antimatter orbiting Kerbol, yes? Engineer 3: Yes. And here is my plan: We launch a rocket toward Moho containing a kethane and ore scanner and a seed extraplanetary launchpad and ore digger and kethane miner. After we successfully land that, we launch our space station building supplies from there. It save a lot of delta V. Then if the station is finished and it have enough antimatter, we retrofit one of our warship with warp drive, use its plasma drive to dock with the antimatter refueling station, fill its antimatter storage, and start its FTL engine to warp 5 Bill: That is the best plan. Now we need to find out our destination solar system

2 year: More updates 4 year: Slight multithreading 5 year: Everyone cooperate for KSP Multiplayer 10 year: Someone will make a thread safe multithreading physics engine that is fully capable of doing n-body simulation and 10k part 11 year: Squad will allow players to input their own planet and solar system parameters 12 year: Space agencies will use KSP for simulations And KSP needs to be extendable, let warfare be in separate branch/mod with the main one. Orbit maneuvering is not intuitive, a troll trying to accelerate his downloaded SSTO fighter toward a space station will find out that thrusting in prograde will slow his ship down. There is no space combat simulation video game that have realistic physics

------------------------------------- The kerbalkind are bored of exploring their solar system, so they instead go....interstellar! ------------------------------------- *a phone rings on Bill's bedroom, and he reluctantly picked it up* Bob: Bill, watch the TV now, set to Channel Kerbal And then Bill turns on his television Reporter: City 17 now are on strike! They declared that they doesn't want to go to other planets anymore! They have seen all the anomalies and now they are bored of it! *explosion at the background* Kerbals: Go Interstellar! Go interstellar! Bill: Well they are telling KSP to go interstellar.... dV is too high, lets change it into other channel Market analyst: Stock market are plummeting to 0.00, the lowest in history! Let go what market are affected by this. O.M.B Demolition Enterprises current stock is also 0.00! Same with Stedler Corp and Rockomax Inc, all of their workers are on strike *Bill changes his channel again* Scientist: Alright here is a model of a theoretical interstellar capable ship. To be able to go toward interstellar space, this theoretical ship must have a lot of delta V and optionally 1G thrust. To get out from Kerbol SOI, we need approximately 12 km/s delta V. However, to get out from our solar system at reasonable time, we need to get our speed at least 2% the speed of light. However, this needs a lot of fuel. And there still a problem with the Kraken... Bill: Everyone are talking about interstellar, lets go to that religion channel *Bill changes his channel again* Monk: To achieve kerbalkind highest enlightenment, we need to get out from our Kerbol SOI and go interstellar *Bill changes his channel again* Astrobiologist: What is our probable planet for our first interstellar trip? I say we probably go toward this solar system with a medium brightness star. Our telescope has detected a planet with a lot of water, and some land. They also have a primitive space program. Without a probe, we couldn't know what species are in that planet Several hours later... Bill: Alright everyone, collect everyone from this planet that knows any slightest thing about interstellar travel. Drive developer, ship developer, R&D tech, life support system. I need several plan for interstellar ship ASAP!

Until I found out how to calculate parallel resistance using decimal, I'm using both of them right now

This is a nice job for my ISV Aghanim! Picture and real challange proven follows later

Its not an ion engine, its SM-FFR, http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/25203-SM-Fission-Fragment-Rocket And for me that implies.....better cooling? Submerged PC? My school uses normal PC for its resources server Finally someone comes up with a really nice proof of why computers doesn't blow up.... Of course currently I'm playing KSP on a laptop, I still need to find a way to cool a 90 deg C rig Its sad that they didn't sell Kill a watt in my country, do you have an idea to make it from scratch? Its really sad that I live in a country where everyone take any health stuff like that radiation completely without stopping for a moment that it is might be wrong... My grandpa believe in a brochure that say cellphone could cook egg, my friend believe in using laptop while it is charging will irradiate you and make cancer, my grandma believe that putting cellphone in a pocket will cause paralysis and standing near microwave is bad, my family thinks that blackberry have more radiation then other phones, there are a lot of ads in TV that supposedly claimed to protect you from that radiation
-
I didn't plan to decelerate any soon, and SM-FFR afterburner fueled by kethane converted xenon can get to 1 g, if only I have KSP on my linux computer, it have 6 GB ram, currently I play KSP on my laptop and it drive the memory consumption to 96%

My family has experienced a computer blows up, and now they think that running a normal household PC 24/7 will make it broken, same with using hibernation and sleep I had a moment when I am out from my 18 hour download spree, my mom tell me to shutdown the computer to let it rest for a while (really!) They also think that a normal fridge magnet could ruin electronics, cellphone radiation could create cancer and paralysis, laptop radiation could decrease sperm count and that hoax y stuff
