1. "Space game" or "rocket game." I mainly talk about it to my unnerdy wife so those convey the message better than anything with Kerbal in it.
2. Ships on rails do and always have changed SOIs and felt the effect. He was doomed to be ejected by the Mun the moment he spawned on that orbit.
3. You can have more than command one pod on one rocket, or research pods that hold more than one kerbal. Then you can have Jeb or Val take the driver's seat while Bill comes along for the ride. He will get the experience even if he does nothing during the flight. You could also research probe cores with pilot abilities and use those, but they come later in the tech tree than the first passenger pod, Mk1 Crew Cabin. To train your kerbonauts you take them around the solar system. There was a thread about the most efficient training regiment somewhere. I forget the details, but I am sure planting flags on Mun and Minmus and visiting interplanetary space for a moment was more than enough to get five stars.
4.
By the way, do you know what game file specifies these things? I've heard there was a file that even specifies the average molecular weight of the atmosphere's gas... but I can't seem to find it

~/KSP_linux$ grep -r -l Laythe * GameData/Squad/Resources/Ore.cfg GameData/Squad/Resources/ScienceDefs.cfg KSP_Data/sharedassets0.assets Launcher_Data/settings.cfg.bak readme.txt settings.cfg settings.cfg~ ~/KSP_linux$ file KSP_Data/sharedassets0.assets KSP_Data/sharedassets0.assets: data
The KSP_Data/sharedassets0.assets looks like the main suspect. It seems to be in some kind of Unity proprietary format. Strings bring out all sorts of interesting stuff from it, but strangely no "Laythe" even though grep finds the file with that word. 4.6.4f1 looks like the Unity version in case you feel like trying to find the tools to examine the contents.

6. Both work, as long as you don't transmit anything you haven't asked and got permission for.
7. Opt out is not proper implementation. Opt in works in all relevant legislations.
8. Having checked a few non-KSP youtubers... No one is trying to imitate anyone. They are just all approaching the platonic ideal of a gamecentric youtuber. The closer to perfection they get the closer to each other they are. No malice, no stupidity, just enlightenment.
9. Yes, that should be workable. Compared to a manned rescue mission there's also that if you crash the rescue lander, you still have just one kerbal to rescue. Some might consider that a disadvantage but you seem like a person who would disagree with them. Also you may find meeting up on orbit easier than precision landing next to a crash site. I know I do. That wont help Sila of course, but could have worked in that previous game. Reason being that on orbit, if you don't get it right, you just keep going around and try to improve on the next near pass. Landing attempts are a do-or-don't type of choice. Even if you don't crash the rescue ship it doesn't help if you ended up half way to the other side from the one needing rescuing.
10. Frankly, I have no idea how to explain that. Luckily the OP just did: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/138839-Largest-Aircraft-to-Land-at-KSC-Island-Challenge
11. That's a known issue. Color interpolation of the biome map sometimes causes the edges between specific biomes to match a third biome that often isn't supposed to be anywhere near. IIRC there is a spot on the Mün where there are 7 (or was it 9) biomes within walking distance of each other all because of this bug. Since the biome map is just used to look up the biome and not drawn on the screen it should not be interpolated. I have no idea how difficult that is to achieve in Unity though.
12. Oh, yeah... I dabbled with a new career last night. So I took a Mk1 pod and added a parachute, which of course went to the only stage so far. I did remember this issue, and though I would be clever about it this time. So I clicked on the small plus button to create an empty stage before the parachute one, then grabbed a Flea and put it under the pod. Guess which stage the Flea went into?
13. It is a bit surprising, but I got the thought of sandbox balancing from this very thread actually. If you read through, a great many players are criticizing the Vector for making lots of engines useless in Sandbox mode. (Because they are worse for any use than the Vector.) So in effect they are calling for the sort of sandbox balancing that I described: Every part is the best for some use, and none is best for every use. While in a career game you actually expect to use lesser parts only until you can unlock or afford the superior parts. I don't know what the root issue with the "useless" parts is though. Maybe people don't like having parts they are never gonna use cluttering up the lists? But this can be a problem in career games too, and in fact some games go as far as removing the obsoleted parts when the better parts become available.
14. The big problem is that sandbox and career just wont balance vs. each other. Sandbox balancing requires every part to be the single best one in the game for some purpose, ever, because otherwise those parts that are best in nothing will never get used. Career balancing requires rewarding the player for advancing in the tech tree by giving parts that better the old parts for the same purpose, because otherwise the player will not feel that they are really advancing anywhere. So as long as KSP has both sandbox mode and career mode, Vector will never be balanced perfectly. It is impossible for it or any other top tech part to be.
15. No, but they heard he will be soon and want to get the seismographs placed beforehand. You know, to see what... uhm... impact he has on the place when he arrives.
16. I've only met spontaneous heating/combustion issues once. My Mün lander started to heat it's right drop tank when I reloaded the game and the ship was on Mün orbit. Going to 5x timewarp for a second fixed it then.
17. I think he's after Probe Control Room mod. Unfortunately it does not seem to have been updated for some time.
18. He does. It is something that Kerbal Space Program does not model.
19. You don't have to take them all there at once. So it isn't any harder than with just one kerbal - you just have to do it four times.
20. I made a mun landing. That takes my total mun landing mission count to four across all KSP versions. Although one of those did involve landing five things, but the ultimate mission was a failure so I count it as a one. So, I noticed that kerbals can climb on top of the flags. Then I went on to use RCS to hover (with difficulty) so I could grab the science and reset the materials bay, as they couldn't reach it from the ground. (I had no ladders unlocked yet.) Then I come here to post about this, and read in another thread that I could have used a flag as a ladder to easily reach the materials bay! Talk about feeling stupid...
21. In theory the changes in pressure should have an effect as they change the drag forces on the craft. In practice I think differences in craft construction as well as piloting cause so much bigger variability that the above effect is completely irrelevant.
22. Doesn't work for me. I always have to recover my clamps. Luckily it's easy to do so with the KSC view craft pins. Then again I don't use the typical setup. I'm running 64 bit linux build 1.0.2 on Ubuntu 12.04. Full stock though, or sometimes with Claw's stock bug fixes but never other mods.
23. Don't - photobucket is slow... slow... slower and their mobile layout is lousy. I often can't scroll around the page so all I see is their top banner.
24. Official multiplayer mode is under development. Meanwhile you have to look into mods. Dark Multiplayer mod seems to be the standard at the moment.
25. sal_vager Red Iron Crown and all the other mods you are all important Oh you meant game mods? I don't always mod... but when I do, StockBugFixes.
