Apollo Saturn V Style
AlamoVampire replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
Okay guys, I want to thank all of you for your fine help! Each of you pointed me where I needed to be! So, to all of you, enjoy these pictures of OUR Cooperative Success in my Apollo/Saturn V B Style rocket. While, I found more issues to fix, namely fuel and staging line ups, I would not be at this point with out you guys, so thank you! Let me thank all of you by name, as you each contributed in such wonderful ways: Lammatt you gave wonderful advice on ascent guidance nhnifong you gave great advice on vectoring ranges Frizzank you gave me the advice on disabling various SAS locations, soo much smoother like that! Hansblix you gave great pictures and advice on where to strut, what to strut, to limit my vertical acceleration, to add in procedural fairings which may have made it a bit bulgy, but wow, did it clean it up, and to shut down stage 1's vectoring and man did it ever settle that beast down! made it to orbit, ran into fueling issues, but, nothing a little tweaking in the VAB cannot fix SRV Ron, you sir, thank you for the advice on the Struts and how to make them attach in nice ways, you just changed alot of future designs Kulebron, thank you for pointing out about potential weaknesses in my joint locations, thank you. Again, thank you ALL for the help, enjoy these pictures -
Apollo Saturn V Style
AlamoVampire replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
problem is, even on 'vertical ascent' right off the pad, as soon as it clears that tallest pair of stabilizers it starts swinging like a wet noodle and only gets worse. Even Mechjeb cannot handle the rocket beyond going UP on the FULL rocket. Once it kicks that first stage off after burn out, it seems to stabilize, but, prior to that, it is nothing but a soggy mess that BARELY holds together even WITH unbreakable joints on -
okay, I have gotta ask it. I can get satellites into a kerstationary orbit, but, I can never figure out how to do more than 1 at a time, let alone if I do more than 1, how to space them so nicely. any tips/advice?

Apollo Saturn V Style
AlamoVampire replied to AlamoVampire's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I shall give that, a um.. whirl lol edit: tried that, disabled torque at the command pod and put a SAS equipped wheel in the middle around the center of mass, and the ship STILL swings like a noodle possessed, almost to the point of destruction. -
Okay, I am absolutely FLOORED by the geniuses here. no sarcasm at all! I know this is a game using real world rocket science, but to see so many of you who have such a spectacular grasp of the math involved is awe inspiring!! I am truly a small fish among giants! Heck, I would not be surprised if Michio Kaku was wandering around here somewhere OR Professor Brian Cox, both super smart men! <bows down to his fellow players>

3/10 on M.Wolfy, seen a few of his/her posts, and to DisarmingBaton5, sup, nice to meet you as well!

Okay, heres the question. I am using mod wise for this, Mechjeb for the autopilot and the Novapunch pack for the parts. I can build a rocket that looks A LOT like NASA's Saturn V B rocket as seen here: the problem is, that, no matter what I try to do to this thing, and in the picture below, you will see some structural pylons and the Novapunch HEAVY struts going from stage to stage to TRY to keep it from writhing like a limp yet possessed noodle. This thing even WITH Mechjeb is UNCONTROLLABLE, I tell it to do a 250km by 250km orbit with a 0 degree inclination, and this thing just flails wildly about the sky picking headings at random. Now, I KNOW this is NOT Mechjeb's fault as it handles other rockets with no problem, even got my mission to Duna, Landed at the face and home again with 0 issues. edit side note: no parts clipping to make the towers stack, found an odd solution using the radial decouplers XD The rocket only comes in at 500 tons and change... Any ideas on how to make this work? Oh, here is what it looks like about half way through the first stage.

0/10 I like the person above me, am still an unknown quantity at this point lol

yup, all the posts here.

Kergarin mission to Duna [PIC HEAVY!]
AlamoVampire replied to SargeRho's topic in KSP1 Mission Reports
Awesome lander and assorted support craft!! Love that aeroshell!! -
It was major over kill to be sure, but, I was also seeing just how large a ship I could punt into orbit, found out the upper limit of my 7 Mainsail Asparagus set up is under 650 tons! Oh but what fun it was to experiment!
-
I give you, the Sagittarius One. A Duna mission, Apollo style. She may only have about 250 parts, but weighs in at a jaw dropping 902.83 TONS!! My normal heavy lifter proved insufficient to lift this beast into orbit. Even WITH the help of MechJeb, she was too much to handle and got into orbit, just not the 250kmx250km 0 degree inclination orbit I intended. ------------------------------ Here is the Sagittarius One Command Module and Lander entering into orbit at Duna. What a nice gift from Duna and Ike, to see an Ike Rise! ------------------------------ Bill and Jebediah pause for a picture taken remotely by Bob up in orbit in the Command Module. ------------------------------ Jebediah noticed something very odd, aside from the fact that they landed next to a giant face. This face has odd properties, that caused them both to float above the surface, but still feel like they stood on it. ------------------------------ Bob, not one to be left out, broke out the telephoto lens and snapped this picture of Jebediah and Bill on the face. You can see the Sagittarius One lander on the bottom left. ------------------------------ Ah home, what a beautiful sight! Kerbin to your upper left, and the Mun below to the bottom right, with the Sagittarius One Command Module In the middle. ------------------------------ The aptly named Angelfish Island as seen by satellites watching the Sagittarius One during re-entry, prior to atmospheric shock heating.

Okay guys, the full picture show will be in mission reports, BUT, I saw this on re-entry to Kerbin, and promptly named it: Angelfish Island.
-
this: this was pure boredom as I sat down and wondered what odd ball thing I can make, and this shocked me to no end. just look at this!!
-
Okay, a little story first. I was sitting here at my computer and thought to myself, what can I build using some tiny engines, tiny octo probe and an orange fuel tank. Then, I built this random mishmash of parts, and launched it. I was shocked to see it roar away from the pad like a rocket possessed. what was more shocking is shown in just 2 pictures: for the record: normal gravity launch to landing!
-
Awesome! Very Iron Giant-ish
-
spectacular plane!! looks a BIT like what NASA has planned for mars
-
and then could come the cheat codes so those who like me who have very limited if any coding experience and are, again like me, not willing to alter save files beyond the occasional kerbal revival or like me, not willing to alter more than that for fear of corrupting something because of said lack of programming skills. who knows, but, either way, this games gonna be fun, hell, IS fun
-
awesome! your ahead of NASA on this one. BTW what mods?
-
absolutely gorgeous
-
I would also recommend MechJeb 2.0.9 or later <if later exists yet lol> as it was for me atleast, VITAL to teaching me how to rendezvous and dock. Short of that, any of the 6 replies above me, contain everything I could possibly suggest Happy Exploring!

and I am curious as to why YOU are curious as to what makes HIM so curious. to the OP, its been said already: but, squad moved the forums to new servers, I am thrilled they are back too!
