KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
TechnicalK3rbal replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Occasional "Light" tasks, mostly gaming and (programming, 3d modelling, stuff for working on my own game). I don't necessarily want something that can "plow through whatever I throw at it", but at least something moderately powerful and an improvement over what I have now. To whoever moved this into this thread, I apologize for posting it where I did, I don't like to post in this thread as it can be difficult to navigate. -
KSP1 Computer Building/Buying Megathread
TechnicalK3rbal replied to Leonov's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I've recently been thinking about building my own computer, but I have some questions. First off, I am probably going to get an Intel i5 4460. Is this worth it, or should I get the other one I was looking at, the i3-4370, as it has a higher GHz(3.8, compared to 3.4)(If you have any suggestions for other ones, I'll gladly take them). Also, relating to this, is there any way to measure the performance of a processor, or is there too many different measurements? And would this be a significant improvement over an AMD Athlon II x64 (Which I have currently)? For the motherboard, is there be any difference in performance/functions/features between the different sizes? ATX, mATX, etc... And as for the case, do the (holes? slots? spaces?) for USB, audio, etc... on the motherboard correspond to those on the case, or would it come with a specific plate, or do I have to find one separately? Would the age of the case make a difference? (For example, would USB 3.0 fit in a case that was made when USB 2.0 was popular?) -

I've never had or seen this issue, have you been able to replicate it? -
Looking for good Minecraft SMP servers. Anybody have any?
TechnicalK3rbal replied to Tex's topic in The Lounge
A fun, no-griefing "family friendly" server (similar rules to KSP forum...) is fun.ethicraft.net . It is still in 1.7.10(might be 1.7.x , I don't rightly remember but I think they're all compatible), but features several helpful plugins and friendly mods/admins and generally nice people. It does, however, require registration on their website, a quick process to prevent griefers/spam/etc. You can still join the server and look around/chat before this, but you can't edit blocks. Sorry if this sounded like a server ad, but it's all true. Also, if you don't mind my asking, what is your in game name? Edit: It's possible to go back to previous versions via the profile editor. -
How to collect WATER??
TechnicalK3rbal replied to Wowfreakstar's topic in KSP1 Gameplay Questions and Tutorials
I don't think that it's possible out of the water, also, addon-discussion or even the Interstellar thread might be better. -
Was it specified that the waves were that large? If the given information were different, the solution can very greatly.

Assuming the ships have enough fuel to get there and back, that would be twice the fuel needed for a one-way trip. You send both boats, but as they are sufficiently seaworthy, they rescue at least one person, with a 50% chance of all three. After that, they can wait longer than the ship we assume is sinking, and can simply wait for their rescue which would only require fuel.

[Airships in 1.12.3] HooliganLabs Mods
TechnicalK3rbal replied to JewelShisen's topic in KSP1 Mod Releases
And how might we determine that? Also, i forgot to specify that the issue is with the airship parts. -

So... Any ideas on how to fix it? -

I didn't see anything in this thread and Google didnt turn up anything, is there any way to fix the GUI for 0.90? (In case this wasnt already mentioned, the GUI doesnt appear, either via Toolbar or rightclick>>>Toggle GUI. (Not the part right-click menus... Those work fine.)) -
Since (finally) updating to version 0.90 of KSP, I have been getting both incredibly low framerates ( < 20 average, as per Nvidia Shadowplay) and spontaneous crash to desktop. So it is playable "vanilla"/stock, but not well. (Next part is modded, but the first part wasn't, so I'll put it in the same thread to avoid double-post/clutter. Feel free to move it, if necessary. ) Since 0.90, I have not been able to start KSP with any mods.It just crashes, (presumably from lack of RAM, given my amateur knowledge of the format of the log files.) Also, stock or not, my CPU is constantly at > 90% use, and > 150 degrees f, as well as in excess of 4000 RPM on the fan, causing it to be (for obvious reasons) very loud and leaving me afraid something is going to fail catastrophically. Are there any fixes for the performance, instability, and crashes, and general low performance of the new version? I can post specs if need be. Edit: Windows 7 x64 (game is x86) V. 0.90 AMD Athlon x4 Nvidia GTX ^50 Crash Log here (Not sure if with mods/without) https://www.dropbox.com/sh/18kbe0ffcyvk6ph/AAB6zI4cJ-KdoFPUq3qzHiAaa?dl=0 Edit2: Spelling Edit3: 6GB RAM

Heh. Looks like we all wanted computer(s) (& parts) this year.
-
Alright. Thanks for the help. Edit: and i assume "chasm" is a good thing?
-
I have, most likely, decided on the GTX 660. However, after still more research, it is only 1/10 better, according to this site. Is it truly that mediocre, or does this site only measure one property of the GPU, and others are better?
-
Yeah, i typoed. The PSU is old and not powerful enough anyways, that is getting an upgrade too.
-
I didn't see the GPU go below 90% in the time I was running the game. (Planetside 2, which is multithreaded as far as i can tell.) Processor is an AMD Athlon II x4.
-
It is an AMD processor, though I'm rather wary of and ATI GPU as I've had problems with them in the past, though given my increased computer knowledge and (obviously) improved technologies, ATI is a possibility. Edit: drivers, not the hardware. That worked fine.
-
Here's a screenshot of the GPU-Z and Task Manager open, as well as the current framerate in game, though the FPS and CPU usage will decrease/increase respectively when large/complex objects are being loaded. About half the time it's at ~15, the remainder at ~30 I assume its the GPU load that is the main issue, not sure though, so i figured I would upload it anyway.
-
Will check that, thanks. Totally forgot about that. Edit: If it is the CPU, how would i go about changing that? adding something like a GPU or RAM is about the limit of my (hardware) computer knowledge...
-
But... the ones you listed have multiple digits?
-
I've currently got a Nvidia GT 610, and am interested in getting a newer GPU. It would be used mainly for gaming, such as KSP, and, what I mainly want a newer one for, is Planetside 2 and Space Engineers, neither of which run particularly well. The (minimum) requirements for those games are (respectively) a GTX 260 and GTX 460. I have, however, found a GTX 660 (2 GB dedicated ram) for relatively cheap, would that be better? I am unsure of how graphics card performance is rated, hence the question. Thanks. Edit: if you have any suggestions for graphics cards less than 100$(US), I would be open to suggestions. Edit2: it runs fine for KSP, but i only get like 15 FPS on the other games, with close-to-minimum settings. Edit3: this might be better in Science labs[Computer Science].
