If you already purchased the parts. Then have at it, you'll have a great computer. If not, I would suggest going skylake too. Pretty much any discrete graphics card can handle KSP at really any settings. I started on a HD 4850, then a GTX 760 WF3 OC, Now a GTX 980 WF3 OC. There was no appreciable difference with stock graphic settings. The CPU is 1000% the bottle neck of this game, since its single core till 1.1. which again, is why I suggest skylake. IPC (Instructions per clock) is the real important number when it comes to KSP performance, not Ghz. And skylake has the highest. Getting an i7 or i5 is up to you. Unless your asking for budget advice, ignore the people who say you don't need it. You also don't need a gaming PC (which your obviously trying to build), KSP, Pizza, beer, football or a snuggie. But they are all really nice to have. THAT'S RIGHT I SAID A SNUGGIE!

Anyone Else Recently Build A Bad@** PC in Reponse to upcoming 1.1?

I went from an I7 920 @ steady 3.5Ghz (saw higher, but not for long) to the 6700K and doubled my framrates with a 600 part ship from 9-10 to 18-23. Its hard to tell where the 30fps limit is because the unload distance is like 18k now or something. So when my test ship gets out of the debris range it skyrockets to my 120fps limit fast. A Computer that can do KSP well. Will handle everything else I do, great. I'm definently not 1000$+ in. Closer to half that. I'm a good bargain finder, and black friday was kind to me. -

Shibby! GTX980 WF3 on its way. Soon I will be compete for every visual mod i can find muahha -
I spent a lot of time on YouTube watching review and comparisons videos. Though I knew I wanted the 6700k CPU. Trying to decide on a motherboard was pretty daunting to me, so started with a hard budget on that. Found the ones that fit that budget, and watched every video and review I could find on them to try and decipher which features would be important to me. I always keep an eye out for the open box/refurb deals. Get more bang for your buck. But once a new motherboard was added in my price range, it was a mad dash to glean every bit of information I could to see if it was the one that would fit me best. So advice to #1 is tell us what your goals are, and more or less a budget to work with, and we can point you in (hopefully) the right direction. #2, Is quite dependent on how well you did your homework and shopping. Making sure everything is compatible, then it really is quite near to plug and play. I put my new PC together in about 20 min. I tested it, then tore is all back down over and over until over the course of about 2 hours until I was happy with placement and cable management of all components. I use PC Part Picker to find parts. It has a nice "Build it" feature that checks compatibility. I would suggest a SSD for the OS boot and KSP. Absolutely not required but it is really nice.

I always wanted to try that. But it just looks like an absurd amount of hassle. (Linuis Tech Tips did one) Once I get my PC up to snuff, I think Ill try liquid cooling on a wall mount instead. Wall Mount PC Wall Mount PC 2 -
My 6700k does that. Right now its idling at 800MHz since all im doing is Hw. Goes to 4.6Ghz when KSP starts
-
The easiest and most direct way to overclock is by upping the multiplier. The MOBO runs the BLCK (Used to be called Front Side Bus) at X Mhz (mine is at 100.66Mhz) Right now. And my unlocked CPU is using a 46x multiplier. Giving me 4.6Ghz. (100mhz * 46) The Stock multiplier is 40. Or 4.0Ghz. The less direct and only real way a locked CPU can be overclocked is by messing with the FSB or BLCK frequencies. The downside is the FSB messes with everything on the MOBO. Like ram. The ram speed is tied to that FSB number. and some other things. And if they arnt up to the task of holding those higher values then that where you really run into issues. If you open your BIOS and have options to change your BLCK Frequency, then you technically can overclock.

I know all about SLI crossfire. It was the different GPUs that threw me. I didn't know you could have a different GPU. I thought it was a SLI/Crossfire only thing with matching GPUs After some research, it turns out my GTX 760 windforce will be a PhysX Gpu instead of being thrown in a closet. -

@OrtwinS I got that impression. Though it is a constant upgrade process. "New computer" to me means New mobo and cpu. Because that's the brain and spine of any pc thats gets built around. Obviously no computer, even the titan supercomputer has a single task. But KSP was the driveing factor behind the upgrade. I knew it was time for a new computer, and throughout all my shopping and research, the number one question was "will this make ksp better, will my parts count and fps go up?" The 6700k has the fastest single core and ipc of the commercial market. So once the cpu was chosen. Everything was how to make the cpu run better. Ddr4, ocing motherboard, ssd and ect. Second to that was wanting Oculus rift. For quite sadistic reasons it turns out. My GF can't even play walking dead or deadspace without hyperventilating and needing extended pause breaks every time she runs into an enemy. Or even thinks there's an enemy nearby.( scary noises) So rift + alien isolation sounds like a good time Anyway, thanks for the kind words -

With every ones high over clocks. What kind of real world temps do you get? Specifically, playing KSP launching your largest craft? -

Prove it! i kids, i kids Tons of Ram has other uses. But, Yeah, I will download every mod I possibly can and run it. Texture replacers and beautification mods really eat up ram. -

Pretty much sums up what my weeks and weeks of research have told me since I decided to build a new PC. I wanted the DDR4 and the benefits of the newer chipset. The 6700k has the highest IPC of any CPU. which is important for KSP. Most Mobos don't have DDR3, even though the Skylake can support it. One would have to compromise to get the ability to use DDR3. Not a typo 4.8Ghz, has been achieved. Silicon Lottery I Guess. I have left it at 4.71GHz right now. But my CPU temps during KSP with the 600part rocket were in the <30c Range. A good GPU in needed for Oculus Rift. The next bribe Ill try to get my parents to agree to It wont happen...But they might go in halfsises.. I didn't spend near that much...like 600$, actually I spent like $250. My parents bribing me for A's got the CPU. A 980 isnt needed for KSP true. -

Geeezzz, Lots of Naysayers. What gives? I guess I should Clarify, The Ram, MOBO, and CPU are new. (and the case, But that was given to me.) I put together an I7-920, Asus rampage 2 extreme with..*cough 3gb DDR3 and a Radeon 4850 back in 2008..when I didn't know anything. Such as Intel changes CPU socket every damn release so my super awesome absurdly expensive MOBO wouldn't be fitted with the next gen unlocked CPU after my funds replenished like I planned. Over the years I added an SSD, GTX 760 windforce, Aio Liquid cooling, and more ram. (with is freaking fantastic, all you naysayers) And bumped up the overclocking as much as I could. I think 8 years was a pretty good run for any computer... It is of course not, Arma 3, Insurgency, ArK Survival. Soon to be Elite Dangerous with Oculus Rift. The games I seem to play are all very CPU intensive. I also am an engineering student. So Code compiling and 3d object rendering, Sony Vegas Video editing. No reason I shouldn't I be about to do all at once? I noticed quite a difference, I bought the 64GB SSD as an OS/KSP drive, and was using my WD250GB 7200Rpm as the storage. Everything on the SSD including KSP just worked so much faster. When the 64Gb drive. *ahem, Died, While waiting for my RMA I needed something else. That 500gb one was on sale for like <$100, So I jumped on it. Challenge accepted If you get any game to use 16, let alone 32, I'd be flabbergasted. -
I'm Super Stoked about 1.1. So I saved up all my Christmas money, Work Bonus, and even a little Grant funds to build a Skylake PC. Core I7 6700k@ 4.8Ghz Asus Range 8 64GB SDD just for KSP, 500gb SSD as primary boot, 1Tb HDD storage. 16Gb DDR4 @2400Mhz (another 16 is in the Que if KSP can make use of it) Liquid cooled goodness Cosair H100i GTX 760OC windforce (Hopefully tax refund gets a 980 ti) Anyone else build I high end PC just because they were excited about 1.1?

Will there every be the ability for a craft to have multiple attachment points? Say a large booster with two decouplers as attachment points to the main rocket? -
The mobo may have 20. But the i7 only supports 16. Xeons and the 5xxx processors support more. Up to 40 lanes I think

From what Iv heard, GPUs arnt bottle necked by even PCie 2.0 x4 speeds.

Heres my cfg. it appears as i might have added a crew cabin and science lap into one part. i didn't know that wasn't allowed -
I was in the same boat. As will a lot of pre 1.1 to 1.1 migrators. I went with the I7 6700k. I am extremely happy with it. A lot of people will direct you to the i5, all the review support its value. But the i7 has a better IPC (instructions per clock). Which is important for a completely CPU intensive game which is why I went with it. My PCs sole purpose is to do KSP and be Oculus ready. If it can do those, it will do everything else juuuusssstttt fine. I doubled my KSP frame rates coming from an OC'd Core i7 920, which I'm proud to admit made me squeal like a cheerleader. That was with the 600 part benchmark monstrosity Dmagic made. Overclocked with KSP 1.1 should allow epic sized ships. My purchasing advice is have the money saved ready to fire, and keep an eye on sales, refurbished and open boxed Items. Buying off ebay is also fine, use papal. Its where I got MY CPU. My MOBO and ram where Black friday AND open box deals. Couldn't have made it happen other wise. Edit: PC Pron
