What is the most furtherest planet you have got to?
Francois424 replied to KerbalScience's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I've been both ways, to Moho and Eeloo and back. Soon with OPM mod in 1.1 I will have so much more farther to go. -
I used Zamzar. But it messed up solar panel textures so I was left unsatisfied. The engine that I converted texture for seemed really good tho. Must be something about these square patterns of the photovoltaic cells not liking to have their texture converted.
-
Today I finally found an easy to use program to convert old TGA to PNG. I updated all textures into the new format... only to find out that although it is okay for the engines, It pixelate solar panels (Balka Solar Panels) and they look like crap. Then I found a post from 2015 on this forum stating that having the better format changes nothing as far as memory usage down the line and as such you can keep the TGA format. Going to stick with TGA's for now for the few parts that I use that still have that format. As long as I don't get the white texture bug of earler KSP with 1.1, That'll be fine. Then I went on the Mun and back... Can't wait for 1.1.

Is there a mod that you couldn't live without?
Francois424 replied to Foxster's topic in KSP1 Mods Discussions
Live without is a huge word, but KER would have to be my pick. Delta-V, Radar Altitude, TWR, Remaining D/V per stage, Orbit altitudes, Horizontal/Vertical speeds are all things I look often when maneuvering around. I used to play without it, but not too keen to returning to that way. -
Looks like his Hydroplane he made a while back. You can see the |---\/---| tail at the back

Friday evening, 11h45pm.... Chatting with the folks on the first StarCitizen chat back then, not having much to talk about and wondering what I am in the mood for. A guy named "Dr.Hawk" posts a link of a stream he is doing... why not. I click on it This appears to be a small pod orbiting a moon replica. Chat just convinced him to land on "the dark side of the moon". The guy pulls it off (he had packed lights on a 4-LVN lander), descend a little green man on the surface, plant a flag, and does the voyage back to this earth-analog, and lands on it no problem while roleplaying that the landing site is now irradiated for the next 50 years. - "What is this game?", I asked. "That, Francois, is Kerbal Space Program", and he posts a link to the old KSP store. I go there, 20$... Heck why not. The rest is history

I used to play blind. Was pretty decent at it too. BUT, it meant far longer testing phases, and you travel all the way and figure you are missing an extra 1000dv. Then back to add some more POOF rocket equation where those tanks only managed to get you 350 more dv. As a newb I actially had to watch videos to figure out a way to get good mileage (asparagus or onion). Allowed me to get on to everywhere but Moho (only managed a flyby @ 15k height) Dres and Eeloo. But DV display makes it so much more easier/manageable.

Oh I would love this.... I even have an Idea I've seen on KSP Twitch : Just remove the "Be Right Back" and center Valentina in the middle (Keep the KSP logo on the other side) I'd buy one like this for sure.

I looked forever to find the author of this masterpiece. Had to find an old Reddit post to find you... I Really LOVE that picture you made. It captures the element of Kerbal exploration and player mistakes so well ! Thank you.

where was YOUR first interplanetry land?
Francois424 replied to Parv Kerman's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I sent a mission to Duna, in Sandbox mode. Had already crashed landed on the Mün a few times, and was getting pretty good at it. I also needed a new rover design... Looking on the web for inspiration, I obviously found this : So I tried to replicate it... unfortunately I don't have a picture of my replica on Duna. The best I've got was the test run on the Mün when I met up with my first successful rover: So yeah, I called her the "Opportunity Spirit" rover. Pretty original, but hey, it worked. So I managed to get it on Duna (Without KER/Meckjeb... totally blind at the time, and quite the newb except from previous Mün experiences), but came in too fast and half the lander was destroyed... by some miracle the rover survived undamaged! so I decoupled the other half of the lander and started roving... Had a lot of fun on Duna, and underneath the battery there is a large ASAS so it was super agile. It drove something like 400km (reaching safe cruising speeds of 50m/s) before one too many wheels broke off and I was forced to abandon her there, stuck in the sand (why does that sound familiar?). Duna was my first out-of-Kerbin system landing. Ironically, I never actually sent manned crew to Duna in that save. In fact I never sent any kerbals anywhere in that save because 0.24 came before I got to it. It would actually have to wait until 1.0.2 before I actually sent a fully manned Rover there to do some Biome hunting. I love Duna tho ! I usually play a Career game but in Science mode. I fire-up a career game, save it, edit it to give me enough money to unlock all building to maximum with say, 500k left-over. Then play a full career game with contract and Kerbal gaining experience and science grind. I just hate unlocking all the building to their maximum, so I get rid of it right away, and I still have to be mindful of my spendings (doing contract for more money) or I could go broke. I love playing like that.

Kerbal Space Program 1.1 Hype Train Thread.
Francois424 replied to Whirligig Girl's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I keep resisting the urge to log-in and do something, I really want to wait for 1.1. Ironically, the wait is even harder now that I know it's being tested and debugged. Just 2 days ago I watched a science show about the Concorde and I thought... you know what ? I could totally do this with the new plane parts from 1.0.5... Managed to resist logging-in and making a Concorde. I rechecked my PC yesterday because a friend asked me how much core I had. I was pretty sure I had 6, turns out I have 12... 1,1's going to be so sweet, now maybe I can finally build a proper base on Pol like I planned in 0.25 but stopped because of lag. -
Don't worry, it's going to be over soon enough. Watching EJ_SA's stream right now, he had a 280 parts ships sitting by a 550 parts ships, and took a kerbal out for a ride. It was a bit laggy, but smooth. And that is while streaming on twitch with music playing in the background AND a Skype call going. Soon... soon.

I would have had a question, if anyone can answer it please do. There is a lot of custom parts out there from different mods. A bunch of them have custom graphics. Will these parts work in 1.1 without being re-drawn ? I don't mind fixing the code under the hood, but will the part and it's animation (Say Balka Solar Panels), how about a custom engine (such as my FMnT280 2,5 nerva engine) ? The rendering of old part looks a tad different, so I am quite worried since these mods aren't being maintained anymore. Thanks (And thank you for the links to the twitch, about to start part 2 now).

What celestial body will you add into KSP?
Francois424 replied to ForumUser's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I did notice that. Not sure I would implement it in retrograde orbit (assuming I had the skill to mod it in the first place, which I don't). I like the Idea of a body orbiting like Halley in regular orbit to use as a base. Since we're talking about making one, why not a comet. Maybe someone will mod it eventually. But I would love that. Kinda like that really old 1984 game "The Halley Project" which I played both apple and Atari 130xe. (In the meantime I am planning a space station that will act as the likes. With KSP1.1 and OPM these ideas make sense) -
Which is the best location for an interplanetary outpost?
Francois424 replied to Butterbar's topic in KSP1 Discussion
Twiddle his fingers.... really they do umm? Might have to send some stuff to Dres now. But not as refueler, but rather as a Base (if 1.1 really fixes the part count for multiple equipment lying around). The "asteroind jumper" @Phil deCube mentioned will most likely my way to go as well, throw in a space station in orbit with antennas and it might do the trick. Good to know, thanks !- 26 replies

Do these thing orbit naturally or they just do fly-by's like Kerbin's asteroids ?- 26 replies

Which is the best location for an interplanetary outpost?
Francois424 replied to Butterbar's topic in KSP1 Discussion
true, but it's much easier just to mine the surface imho. you might be better than me with asteroids but I always find it annoying clawing them and moving them around. But if you like going for asteroid then of course that would be a perfect spot.- 26 replies

Which is the best location for an interplanetary outpost?
Francois424 replied to Butterbar's topic in KSP1 Discussion
I read your post after wondering where Minmus was. Fact is nowhere much, really. Pol is good if you want explore the Joolian system and assuming you can even et a low tech colonization ship with all the necessary hardware there, then you just need a transfer ship (4k dv?) and a good lander with 7k DV and you can go land anywhere, even Tylo. Ike and Gilly are limited (only the Planet and the extra biomes on the little moons). Eeloo and early game seems odd, when you only have solar panels and no RTG. Plus Eeloo really looks like a less cratered Mün, with nothing much that I had the chance to find (yet). Dres is very DV intensive to get to... is it worth it for an outpost? maybe, but not sure. It wouldn't be my first choice. All the rest... nope. Eve? Moho? ahah. Vall, Laythe, Bop? Pol is much better IMHO. The free station is a good option, but it needs refuelers (and other needs if you play with Life Support mods). It's a good substitute for a Pol base... But I believe if you build her smart, you can use that station as a movable base. So go to Moho, refuel, explore the local, refuel as needed, and move on. You could do a grand tour as soon as you have ISRU and either RTG/Fuel cells (I would add docking ports as well). I would go with this option myself given your choices... pretty sure I could make this work now (but not when I had just started playing). As long as the station + lander has enough DV to get from one planet to the other and land the ISRU/lander, then it works.- 26 replies

Today I decided to upgrade my old 0.25 Jool-5 designs for 1.0.5 I decided to start with the "Laythe Ascender", so I upgraded the design and after extensive testing at Kerbin, decided the time had come to try it on Laythe herself. Activated Simulation mode (Hyperedit)... ... and begun my descent, things are heating-up but nothing uncontrollable. Humm, only water... that is untested 'ground' for the lander, but let's see if it's going to work. Gotta love the view... Drogue 'chutes deployment successful ! Touchdown!!! No damage, ship holding steady thanks to SAS, but electricity is disappearing... Let's get that science ! Okay good, we can reach the instruments. Too bad we cant "Float a flag", so we'll have to skip that step. Let's prepare for take off... Science module ejection confirmed, no damage. Successful ladders and landing legs ejection, engine at 100% throttle... Laythe Ascender is ascending and on the way ! 60 x -200km altitude... But the ship was not supposed to redock with the mothership anyways. So complete circularization with minimal effort by Jebediah, now waiting for the Mothership to pick him up. I could add extra fuel on the lander if I wanted to do a complete circularization, about 10LFO would suffice at that point. I might, but the Kerbal way works just as good. At any rate, "Laythe Ascender" design successful ! Minimal mods used for it too... - Necrobone's radial LFO fuel tanks (x4), landing gears (x4) and radial batteries(x2). Did not even need Tweakscale for this one - EDIT: Forgot Surface Lights ! 'cuz "you gotta have Moar Liiightssssss !" TM

The new X-Com reboot really missed it's first impression on me when it was released. I think I played 5 hours before being too disgusted to continue ? Too many restrictions in this new iteration turned me off really quickly. Then I booted the original X-Com: UFO Defense (The one where the marrines are called squaddies haha) and played a week non-stop... To me it's a near perfect sci-fi, squad combat/Turn-based battlefield game. A bit like BREACH (for my AtariST)... man did I clock hours on these titles. Of course it's comparing apples and oranges if we bring KSP into the mix. KSP is really something else (pun intended).

Francois424 replied to ForumUser's topic in KSP1 Discussion
KSP equivalent of Halley's comet. Solid ground to build a base on, and unlimited ore since classified as a planet/moon and not an asteroid (if only very small). Land on it near Kerbin, drop off the first guys around near Moho (free DV saved), and follow the ride all the way thru to around Neidon (of OMP mod, the Neptune analog) That would be so cool. -
Now... That is a nifty and compact little thing. Pretty interesting way to go about it (Build on the inside instead of the outside, and got all the essentials. Would fit in a rather small space plane too. I think I have found my project for the next time I have free time.

Today I managed to fix the "Hybrid-Ion Electric Pack" for 1.0.5. With what I have learned fixing other old parts it was over in about 5min ( + 1hour of testing to make sure everything works)... As far as I can tell everything is OK. If course some parts are kind of useless now with the new stuff we got since 0.23 (last update of said mod), but it makes amazing end-game engines if nothing else. 3 happy kerbals made a turn around the Mün before returning to Kerbin. I also experimented on new rover design without much success, and Finaly landed a rover on Eeloo. It saddens me to say Eeloo is kind of like the Mün, but less interesting. Still an interesting place for a base. I did a Duna plane... it doesn't take off very well, it can't land very well either, but it flies like a real bird (6k D-V as well!). Still a plane that can barely take-off and cannot land.... yeah. Redesign time.
