  1. Nice work, but the gold tank is a tank, it's not a lander. If you watch the video, the lander used by the crew is one of the two sent ahead of the crew vehicle. It's the reason it carries an Orion capsule at the front, so that they can transfer across. That's at about the five minute mark on the video. That gold tank is drained on the transfer to mars and dumped. The problem recreating it the lack of a "saddle truss" in KSP - essentially an open truss cargo bay. Using the two girders that you originally did would have been quite weak I imagine. I wonder if we can talk one of the many talented modders here to create a saddle truss :-) Otherwise, nicely done - it's nice to see someone building the Copernicus, it's a great looking ship, I think.
  2. But we ARE just further ahead on a scale. There's no fixed limit, above which you can be said to be sentient, as far as I know. It's like sexual preferences, it's scientifically meaningless to talk about people being straight or gay. It's all a sliding scale, with most people being near the "straight" end, some near the "gay" end , and a few closer to the middle. I imagine sentience the same way, with ringworms near the bottom, apes somewhere near our end of the scale, and us near the top.
  3. I really only went to Off-topic/Junkyard for Laythecat, Insanity dump, Enigma I and Enigma II. just a place to talk, be silly, and without having to figure out how IRC works. that and since it's a forum no one expects you to reply within seconds so you have more time to plan your posts. And half of the people I saw In the junkyard/games are all part of the Enigma gang.
  4. We best not talk about Enigmas or the mighty hammer of the mods comes down upon us.
  5. I like the design. I'm rather fond of "tractor" style ships. I think you should be able to get to Duna without a problem. With careful aerobraking, you should have the fuel you need to get home. As far as your solar panels, I've done the same thing. Sticking a photo-voltaic panel that doesn't need to be opened would help you make sure your Kerbals don't get cold because you'll always have the juice to open your big wings. Also, with those big wings, you could easily strap a couple of xenon tanks and some ion engines on the ship to help you make little tiny maneuvers without blowing through fuel. Margaul the Magnificent, Slayer of the Elevator Boss, Prince Ali, and the guy who always has his finger on the "talk" button.
  6. Lets talk internals. I know some people don't like the original pod being unmanned. It may be because of the size of the original pod. Here is a comparison pic: I want to know what you all think about making internals for it? I don't know how to do internals yet, but if enough people want them, I will try. It may not be possible as the pod may have to be bigger on the inside (Dr. Who style) and I don't know if internals work like that. I would also need to edit the original texture to make a realistic hatch, which Squad may not like (as far as I know they haven't minded my work so far). So internals, yay or nay?
  7. Many, many facts against this common argument. Far too many to list. Can we talk about something else now? Like, say, the Moholes?
  8. Depends. I'm a pilot, so I was taught Center of Gravity. But in space there is no gravity, so it makes more sense to talk about Center of Mass, I just use CoG out of habit .
  9. Perhaps, but at the same time it was only by a group decision on the part of the moderation team that it was even allowed to get that long, because at the time it was determined that people were behaving well enough to allow it to continue. And at all times it should have been known that it would have been closed at the first sign of problems, with the possibility of replacement surviving depending entirely on what caused it to be closed. Easier said than done. Although trolls will be trolls, they still have to accumulate the same point totals that everyone else does before they can be banned. Just in practice they tend to do so much faster than most people, so even if they survive the first round they usually cause problems again and get finished off. Discussion does indeed create knowledge. But there is a time and a place for discussions, and the proper place for discussion about events that invoked forum moderation is through PMs with the moderation team. We try to be good about hearing out people's concerns, so long as they are presented in a respectable manner and have good reasoning behind them. So, let's talk about something fun. Who here has been to the beach?
  10. Talk about rapid prototyping, 3 new versions in 2 days!
  11. Better yet, control the rocket from the orbital view once you've got past the 10-km mark by bringing in the navball. Now you can control your rocket while simultaneously checking your current heading and situation. Talk about multitasking
  12. Which I don't deny. But we only have the theoretical weather systems in place. The point were you have to calculate, there are so many factors just on earth you have to take into consideration. When calculating local conditions over a few days you usually get it right, but here we talk about a global system over millions of years on a planet with different physical conditions. Even our most advanced computers have a hard time predicting what weather conditions are like on earth in a few centuries.
  13. Btw don't know if this has been mentioned before but I recall talk of a S2WB crew tank? also the S3 no longer animates, intentional or oversight?
  14. dimovski Because this game does not have a tenth of those systems of control of the ship which is in real life. For example separate control engine thrust. At the beginning of our rocket Soyuz U had several types of engines, big engines were not gimbal range and the small steering nozzle asked vector of spacecraft motion. As in real life. But as expected the good ideas were not possible due to technical limitations game. I can talk about this for a long time, and why I'm doing this way and not otherwise. But perhaps I umeschayas all in one sentence, I do Adoni to them was a pleasure to play. In this version of the game, trying to make an exact copy of anything that causes this addon turns out not playable. For example developers have long promised to introduce changes in the response time of the thrust vector (now it is instantaneous, which causes a lot of vibration and yaw in different directions) but so far nothing has been done. And you have to wait nabratsya patience and hope that the Squad listen to the requests of the developers of addons.
  15. I am excited to hear the fix is about to be released. I am new and never used DR, but with all the talk on this thread, it must be amazing. Looking forward to it!
  16. The Earth and Moon also have a center of mass (located inside the Earth). The center of mass is just that: The center of the combined masses of the objects in the system. Whether or not they are one solid object or millions of particles (this is why we can talk about the center of mass of a gass cloud). Most of the time though the CoM and CoG will be the same or very close together.
  17. I've been playing for a couple months now, so I thought I'd show off my mod-free, stock parts, Duna Trip. I took way more fuel than I needed, but seeing as I was basically putting my college math/physics skills to the test, it seemed like a good idea. Plus, it allowed me to make a bonus pit stop, so I was rather pleased. My Skycrosser is the command module, and is a pretty basic design using Aerospikes and a Poodle. I found this to be the most stable configuration. I've since used the Skycrosser to make Mun and Minmus trips with big landers that carry rovers, and an Orbital Trip to Eve with a lander probe. However, I originally designed it for this trip. My Skystrider is the lander, and the engine configuration is the same. The fuel capacity is half that of the Skycrosser. My idea was an Earth Orbit rendezvous, Trans-Duna injection, parachute assisted landing, Duna Orbit rendezvous, and then the trip home. However, for weight considerations on the return trip, I transferred the remaining fuel from Skycrosser, separated the command pod, and went home using the Skystrider. I actually got the idea from Apollo 13, and it has worked brilliantly. I attached a probe core to each vessel that allows the vessels to be operated independently. I took only two Kerbals for the first trip. Obviously, Jebidiah was first down the ladder. Each part of the ship went up independently and docked with my Olympus Fueling Station. Pictured below are the ships awaiting departure from the station with my handy-dandy Laurel II fueling/rescue ship docked up top awaiting any "Uh-Oh" moments that occasionally occur on my missions. A quick un-docking, a roll to correct for photo ops, and we are ready for the initial rendezvous with two fully fueled ships. After a nice, long burn, the solar panels were deployed and Jeb and Bill had a few weeks to swap stories about the Kraken and Daring EVA's. After I entered Duna's SOI, I narrowly avoided Ike's SOI, but I managed to get what I think is a rather epic screenshot that I currently use as my desktop. After that, I retracted the solar panels and performed my only picture perfect aerobrake into a circular orbit. Ever. Seriously, I've never ever had another perfect aerobrake. Skystrider seperated at that point and began it's descent to the Dunar surface. I only took one screenshot of the descent. Mostly because I was too busy trying to manage the descent and worrying about the parachutes ripping my craft to shreds and worrying about the final touchdown since I had absolutely no idea (other than the appearance of the shadow) of how high/low the surface was. Everything worked out nicely, I made a smooth touchdown just shy of a rather large canyon and Jeb and Bill took a walk outside. After I got bored jumping around and using the EVA packs to splat-n-slide my Kerbals in the dirt, I launched Skystrider and maneuvered for a Duna Orbit Rendezvous. I refueled, separated the Skycrosser command pod, and got ready to make the long wait for Kerbin to be in the right place to get home. At this point, I realized I had a ton of fuel and time, and Ike was just sitting there teasing me, so I figured, why wait in orbit for Kerbin to be in the right place when I can wait on the surface of a crazy shaped moon? A few quick maneuvers later, Jeb and Bill were dancing on Ike's face. This still ranks as one of my proudest KSP moments. Finally, Kerbin was in the right place, so I launched Skystrider and made my shot home. The pit stop at Ike and the shot home drained all of my fuel, and I had to make so pretty clever use of my RCS in order to get into Kerbin's atmosphere. Finally though, the home fires started to burn I had two good chutes, and after fluttering down to safety, Jeb and Bill made their final EVA of the trip If anyone has any feedback, or suggestions on the design of my crafts, I'm curious to read what people have to say. Also, my Skycrosser program is pretty successful, but I think it's reached it's limits without mods, unless I can come up with creative ideas. Margaul the Magnificent, Slayer of the Elevator Boss, AKA Prince Ali, and the guy who always has his finger on the "talk" button.
  18. Technicaly, when we talk about pod torque, we talk about the ability of a pod to create angular moment in space without the need of RCS. But yes, each pod is equipped with a weak (compared to the standalone modules) SAS force if you press T. And SAS modules will indeed resist to any turn. You might find it harder to turn, but it might prevent you from tipping over.
  19. Seeing as the talk of expansions was just spitballing and they have no idea whether or not they'll ever make any, I doubt that this is driving development decisions. So go play 18. It was a pretty awesome game already back then. As for myself, I'm enjoying a better selection of engines to tailor to my craft, more choices of command pods and probes, rover wheels, terrain improvements, performance improvements, Kerbal facial expressions, improved construction of large ships with the big docking rings, the many possibilities allowed my structural pieces, and other stuff I'm too lazy to remember and list right now.

  21. If it doesn't burn a hole in the bathtub and starts to burn everything below the bath. Edit: Rage, I think we need to talk about acid bathtubs...
  22. I avoid it too, unless it's someone I know well. I never talk in classes unless I'm with friends. Even then I'm pretty quiet.
  23. HAHA thats what I was about to say, I have been like this forever it seems, if its not KSP its something else. I think we are just not so hot for the small talk (well I know I am).
  24. Are we still going on about the Flat-Earth people? Can't we talk about something else? Like the Timecube guy? Now that's WHACK A DOODLE
  25. I call it "Bob." Sometimes I like to imagine that the Kerbals on the surface wake up in the morning and wave at it and say "Hi, Bob!", and then I pretend that they pretend it says, "Hi, [insert Kerbal Name Here]!" back, but then they get depressed because they realize it can't actually answer back because it can't talk. And now I've made myself sad thinking about depressed Kerbals. Aww...
