3 to 1 before 2 to 1 adapter in tech tree

In the tech tree, you get the 3 to 1 before the 2 to 1, then you get the 4 to 1. Seems like it should be the 2 to 1 before the 3 to 1.

I think it's because the tricoupler was the first to be added in the game - dating right back to 0.7.3.

The bicoupler is IMHO the most useful, since if you want three or four stacks you can do that easily with radial attachment.
