I propose to HarvesteR and the team to include an easter egg memorial somewhere on Laythe, like they did for Armstrong...

How about a photon torpedo casing like in Star Trek III: The Search for Spock?

I second this. Seeing as Leonard Nimoy is one of (if not) the most iconic actors of all Science fiction. Sure he didn't land on the moon, but he is one of the reasons space is engrained into so many people's memories today. If you would like a memorial on Laythe too, vote yes!

That would be a nice little tribute. I'd be a bit concerned about copyright issues, though...

On the subject, I wish I could go back and redo the armstrong memorial on the mun. It was a very quickly made thing owing to the suddenness of the announcement (and an impending release, I think? can't remember) and I think it deserves to be made a bit nicer...

No. It makes sense to commemorate some of the real pioneers, but not actors or other media personalities, IMO.

Personally, I've always thought it strange that Armstrong has a memorial but Gagarin doesn't. Both of those guys undoubtedly deserve it.

I assume that's because they added it as a response to Armstrong's death, which happened in 2012 (after KSP development had started), while Gagarin died many years ago.

It was specifically due to the fact Armstrong died during the development of the project.

But I think it could be good idea might be to create a larger-than-life replica of the Fallen Astronaut memorial placed on the moon:

Accompanied by an equivalent plaque.

at the least, is leonard a name in the kerbal name generator?

I don't think that's a good idea. It feels disrespectful to blow up a kerbal named after someone who's recently died. "Neil" was removed from the name generator for this reason.

I'm not very familiar with Star Trek, is Laythe the best place for it? Other wise, I completely support.

He died in the second movie and was "Burried" on the genisis planet, a life bearing planet that was created at prety much the same time he died (although it blew up in the next movie). Laythe is the only other planet with a breathable atmosphere in the kerbin system. Dosent quite fit but laythe or kerbin are the only two that even remotely fit.

Where would they put Gagarian's? Yes he was the first man in orbit but what would they do? put a random capsule in orbit? how would anybody even find it if it wasn't targetable as it would be mobile (finding the magic bolder around ike was a PITA) He also died long before KSP. Armstrong died during game development and his memorial was a spur of the moment thing added when it was on the dev's minds due to being a current event. Not arguing he's not worthy of a memorial, just lacking the immediate motivation and easily appropriate location and imagery.

Some other items might be less controversial. In the other thread, I suggested:

Vulcan harp

Three-dimensional chessboard

IDIC (infinite diversity, infinite combinations) symbol

Bridge science station hooded viewer

Any of these items could be worked into one of the KSC background pictures.

It doesn't have to be an item you find in the solar system.

I support this. Very nice idea. I can easily imagine the chessboard in Administration building backgeound or the Kerbal Hiring bulding.

E: or maybe something in IVA capsules since they are worked on right now.

E2: the viewer would work perfectly for the lab module!

Damn, this is depressing. This is the first I've heard of his passing.

I voted yes on the memorial, even though I'm a little unsure as to the appropriateness of it. I DO think Nimoy was the kind of well-rounded person one should strive to be, and he contributed to our culture's enthusiasm for space in a big way.

As far as the location...Perfect.

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of my friend, I can only say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most....human.

I voted no, although I can understand why so many are voting yes.

Instead of a memorial on Laythe though, how about one out beyond Eeloo's orbit, randomised (within a certain range of orbital parameters) for each new game. Visiting Mr Nimoy / Spock's memorial should be a voyage 'where no-one has gone before'.

Controversial opinion incoming:

No.

Nimoy was a great actor, Star Trek is a good.. universe thing, but personally, I think a memorial to him would be out of place and the start of a slippery slope. Out of place because well, this is the Kerbal Universe, not ours (Armstrongs monument gets a pass because they guy did walk on the Moon and I think that one man is symbolic of the entire space exploration. I read it as RIP Neil Armstrong but I see it as a monument to space flight everywhere and the advances and knowledge it's given us). I think it's the start of a slippery slope because why stop at Nimoy? Will Patrick Stewart get one? Sir Patrick Moore didn't get one when he died in 2012 but was a beloved astronomer in the UK and arguably helped inspire many younger people back then about space and the Moon.

At the end of the day, Nimoy was a great actor, but still just an actor. He didn't walk on the moon, he didn't help figure out the secrets of our universe.. can we keep the memorials to an absolute minimum and only to those that actually made a significant difference to space flight? Or are we going to want a memorial for any well-liked famous person? I'm worried this is just going to be a knee-jerk reaction to some sad news.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, this is sad news and I liked Nimoy, but I do not want a memorial to him. It just wouldn't make sense.

I voted yes but I totally understand the no's.

Personally I prefer a compromise: the burial tube. Similar to the SQUAD Munoliths; black, shiny, plain. Perhaps some worn down writing but no names or further references. Any player who gets the reference instantly recognizes it but it won't be intrusive for those that don't.

I did a quick Google search for Patrick Moore, and got 40x less hits than for Leonard Nimoy. There were two primary meanings: one of the founders of Greenpeace I kind of recognized, and an astronomer I had never heard of before. I guess that Sir Patrick Moore wasn't someone most KSP players would recognize.

You're also underestimating the cultural impact of the original Star Trek. It was the series where the first Space Shuttle got it's name from, and Spock was its most recognizable character. Kirk may arguably have been the lead character, but he was just a generic hero, while Spock is the character everyone remembers.
