Upgrading my laptops RAM to 8GB just for KSP

you're fine if you use linux or risks unstable win64 or simply wants other programs open at the same time

You mean the unstable win64 builds that are being discontinued for the next release? Or maybe you mean the win64 builds that most mods disable themselves on?

And while I may be jumping to conclusions here, something tells me that the OP isn't the kind of person who uses Linux. Just a hunch.

Don't bother. KSP can't actually use more than about 3 to 4 GBs of RAM. This is a limitation of all 32 bit processes, not just KSP.

3 or 4 GB for KSP and 1,5 to 2,5 for Windows... It might be useful, but it depends on the exact user case.

If more RAM won't help... is there anything that will? I meet or exceed all the official system requirements, but the game seems to crash every other time I'm in the Vehicle Assembly Building, and it takes a very long time to open the list of saved craft files (at the VAB or the launchpad).

Yeah...Good luck with this...I have 6GB installed (5.8GB usable)... KSP crashes for me when my TOTAL RAM usage hits 4-4.1GB.... Crashing at 4.1GB=1.5GB system + 2.5GB KSP....My computer NEVER utilizes more than 4.1GB of its "6GB" of RAM...EVVV-ERRRR.......Windows BLOWS!

Are you sure your OS is 64-bit?

Try taking a look at Active Texture Management and/or DDS loader. They do a lot to reduce memory usage.

More RAM will help if you have a 64-bit operating system.

Although KSP (32-bit) can't use more than 4 GB, if you have only 4, some of it is reserved by your operating system and programs running in the background. If you install 4 more, KSP will have 4 GB all for itself. No more creating virtual memory on hard drive. You will definitively experience an enormous surge in computer speed. KSP will load a bit faster, but what is more important - upon exiting you won't have to wait for all the stuff in the virtual memory to be transfered to RAM. Occasional crashes will turn from 10 minute agony into a few second nuisance.

So yeah, install an identical additional 4 GB module and you'll be a lot happier with your computer performance. :)
